The Koroit and District Historical Society Inc. aims to foster and share historical interest and knowledge within the district.


The Society was formed in 1983 as a result of efforts to save the Tower Hill Common School from demolition.The fully restored School is now the Society's headquarters.
The Society aims to compile and keep an historical record of the district and work towards the establishment of a museum.
The Society holds a collection of historical documents and photographs and other information which is of assistance to those carrying out historical or genealogical research.

Opening Hours

The second Sunday of each month - 1pm to 4pm and during the Lake School of Celtic Music Song and Dance (first week in January), Koroit Swap Meet (March), Koroit Irish Festival (April/May), Koroit Show (Nov) and by appointment at other times

About Our Collections ›

Koroit has a collection of historical memorabilia relating to the local district and Koroit township. This includes objects, photographs, documents, books, booklets and some family research records. We have significant records of the early shires and some land settlement.

Significance

We are endeavouring to record and preserve the history of the local district and present. This is important for local clubs and families who wish to research events and happenings.

Victorian Agricultural Society Medal

Koroit & District Historical Society , Koroit

Circular medal with small knob on top.

Historical information

This medal, dated 1858, was awarded to local farmer Marcus Macartney by the Victorian Agricultural Society on the 21 April 1858, for the prize 'Potatoes

Significance

The medal is of local historical significance"for its association with the early promotion of agriculture in Victoria through public shows and competitions in the 1850's; and its link to the emergence of the Koroit-Tower Hill area,with its rich volcanic soil, as a properous farming district, especially for potato-growing." Croix de Guerre avec Palme

Koroit & District Historical Society , Koroit

A cast bronze medal comprising a cross pattee interspersed with crossed swords. The medal is held by a green ribbon which has 7 thin red vertical stripes. Across the ribbon is a bronze palm which is a symbol of victory

Historical information

This is a relatively rare award for Australian soldiers with only 213 Australians awarded this medal during WW1

Significance

Awarded between 1915 and 1919 and is thought to have been awarded to a Koroit district soldier.

Tussock burner

Koroit & District Historical Society , Koroit

The tussock burner is a long handled tool with a fuel burner at one end.

Historical information

This hand tool was used to reduce tussock grass by burning. It comprised of a long wooden handle with a wick and fuel container at one end. This kind of implement was used in the early 20th Century up until around the 1940s.

Significance

The tussock burner is of local historical significance as an example of the kind of hand tools used during the period of early farming in the Koroit district. The significance is increased by its possible connection to Joseph Patrick Lee, farmer of Wangoom.

bottle - R S Corson Chemist Koroit

clear glass pharmacy bottle that would have held a liquid.

Historical information

R S Corson was a chemist in Koroit in the 1920s. This bottle was unearthed in a garden in the nearby township of Kirkstall.

Significance

The bottle is an example of the type of bottle used by a chemist at this time.

Glass Slide

A square glass slide comprised of photographic film sandwiched between two fine glass sheets donated by Koroit Theatre Management

Historical information

Used for advertising at the movies shown at The Koroit Theatre. Ogles had a radio store in Commercial Rd Koroit.

Significance

This is part of collection of glass slides of historical and aesthetic significance to the local area of Koroit and district, and extending to the Warrnambool area. This collection could also have potential for state level significance. "Helen Doyle - Significance Assessment

Priest's Robe - Chasuble

Koroit & District Historical Society , Koroit

A black robe embroidered with black and silver,The chasuble is Roman style also called sandwich board, Pre- Vatican II style. It is watered silk and it may date from the early 20th C but it may date late 19 Century.

Historical information

This item was used at St Patrick's Catholic Church, Kirkstall from 1910. Although the item is black, black is no longer a liturgical colour after Vatican II.

Significance

This is of historical significance to the people of Kirkstall and Koroit. It has potential spiritual significance of the local catholic population. it represents a typical item of a small village church in the late 19th Century.

There is an embroidered symbol on the front that encompasses the letters J H and S. Symbolic braiding.

CWA Commemorative Key

Cardboard Key with signatures 1933-1954

Historical information

This cardboard key commemorated the 21st birthday of the Koroit CWA in 1954 and was signed by all members as well as members from neighbouring branches.

Significance

This is the only artefact at the society that clearly states who the Koroit members were in 1954.
