In Bendigo, he was appointed assistant gold commissioner 1852 and senior commissioner 1854. Over the years, he served as magistrate at Jamieson-Wood's Point, Anderson's Creek, Heidelberg, Geelong and Melbourne. He owned land on the Yarra River and Panton Hill is named for him.
