Lights, Victorian kerosene banquet lamp

City of Moorabbin Historical Society operating the Box Cottage Museum, Ormond

This kerosene, flat wick, banquet lamp has a clear glass shade chimney with a frilled rim, a reservoir of plain yellow glass and a metal engraved base . 1 side screw to adjust the flame

Historical information

The kerosene lamp is a type of lighting device that uses kerosene as a fuel. Kerosene lamps have a wick or mantle as light source, protected by a glass chimney or globe; lamps may be used on a table, or hand-held lanterns may used for portable lighting. There are three types of kerosene lamp: traditional flat wick, central draught (tubular round wick), and mantle lamp. The screws on the side adjust the flame and hence the strength of the flame produced. Prior to the introduction of gas and electricity these lamps provided lighting in all households

Significance

Pioneers and early settlers in Moorabbin Shire relied on kerosene lamps for lighting their homes after sunset.

Book - Gippsland Institute Information for Prospective Students

Federation University Australia Historical Collection (Geoffrey Blainey Research Centre), Mount Helen

Aqua soft covered book relating to the Gippsland Institute. The contents include Aboriginal Studies, Accounting, Administration, Applied Science, Business, Computing, Engineering, Nursing, Psychology, Primary Teaching, Secondary teaching, Social Sciences, Visual Arts and Welfare.

Historical information

When the book was printed the Gippsland Institute had 170 academic staff with 150 support staff, and employed more than 200 people on a sessional basis. 3,800 students were enrolled at that time, with 2,400 involved in the on-campus programme, either as full time or part time students. Federation University Australia was established on 1 January 2014. Formerly known as the University of Ballarat, its enabling legislation was the University of Ballarat Amendment (Federation University Australia) Act 2013. Although formally created as a University in 1994, the University of Ballarat had a lineage back to 1870 with the establishment of the School of Mines Ballarat, making it the third institution of higher learning to be established in Australia and the first to be established in regional Australia. On 1 January 1994, Ballarat University College became the University of Ballarat and in 1998 the University merged with three TAFE Institutes to become a dual sector institution with multiple campuses. On 1 January 2014, the University of Ballarat amalgamated with the Monash University Gippsland Campus to form Federation University Australia. The Gippsland Campus also had a long lineage dating back to 1928 with the establishment of the Yallourn Technical School which became a predecessor institution to the Gippsland College of Advanced Education formed in 1968. In 1990, it was renamed the Monash University College and in 1993 became the Gippsland Campus of Monash University. Federation University Australia, or FedUni, is Australia’s newest public University. Headquartered in Ballarat, Victoria, the University offers programs in Higher Education and Vocational Education and Training to regional Victoria and beyond. The University’s commitment to educational and social equity, teaching excellence, research distinction, environmental sustainability and regional capacity building has enabled it to develop in a way that draws on its proud heritage to inform its future. Its regional character sets a framework for the University’s priorities but does not constrain it from serving wider community interests, nationally and internationally. With campuses from Horsham in the west of the state, to Churchill in the east, the name Federation University Australia was chosen to convey the scope and capacity of an expanded regional university with a federated network of campuses contributing to a new and different Australian university.

Inscriptions & Markings

On the inside cover of this book is printed: "The Councils of Monash University and Gippsland Institute have agreed to the Gippsland Institute becoming an affiliated institution of Monash University. This is the first step in an ongoing process where the Gippsland Institute will become the Gippsland University College as a constituent university college of Monash University. The establishment of the Gippsland University College as a constituent college of Monash University is subject to legislation."

Card - Supporter of the Pall

Warrnambool and District Historical Society Inc., Warrnambool

This is a small piece of buff-coloured lightweight cardboard given to those at funerals who were designated to hold the tassel ends of the pall covering the coffin. The card has black printed material on both sides and a band of black across the top right hand corner. There is a small crease on the card and it is a little smudged.

Historical information

This card is one that was given to those who were designated to hold the tassels of the pall at a funeral conducted by Beattie and Phillips of Warrnambool. A pall was a cloth used to cover a casket or coffin at a funeral. The pall often had four or more tassels on the edges and these people, usually men, would hold the tassels when the coffin was being carried into the church and out of the church. The pall was removed before burial. It was also in some services unfolded and folded in a ceremonial manner when it was placed on the coffin and when it was removed. Other men would have been designated as pallbearers to carry the coffin to and from the church. The firm of Beattie and Phillips was commenced in Warrnambool in the 1860s, by Christopher Beattie and Henry Phillips, initially in Koroit Street and after 1928 in Fairy Street. James Beattie, the son of Christopher, was the proprietor from 1896 to 1945 when James Leahy took over but traded for some years as Beattie and Phillips. The business was sold in 2000 and an undertaking business still operates from the same premises.

Significance

This is a very interesting card as it is a great example of funeral practices 70 to 80 years ago. The practices may in many cases be the same today but cards such as these are no longer in use. It is also important as an item connected with Beattie and Phillips, one of the two best-known undertaking businesses in Warrnambool’s history.

Inscriptions & Markings

Side One: ‘Supporter of the Pall, Front Tassel-Right, Beattie & Phillips, Undertakers, Warrnambool, (J.C. Beattie), Phone 165 Day and Night, over’ Side Two: ‘Kindly show this card to Funeral Director when pall is being used and keep as a Memento’.
