Stained timber box of 200x40x50mm with maroon silk lining containing a gold plated rail dog spike/pin.

Historical information

Used at the Moorooduc Station opening ceremony 14th Septembers 1991. Shire Presidant Councillor Pat Leech perfomed the striking of the Pin. The Pin was later removed for posterity and to be re-used when the line is re-opened to Baxter.

Significance

Only one ever produced specifically for MRPS.

No inscriptions of memorial plates. Striking marks and withrawing marks present with mild tarnishing.

Geoff Williams Born: 18/11/1930 From: East Geelong via Warragul Height: 183cm Weight: 83kg Natural kicking foot: Right Guernsey number: 21 First senior match: Round 1, 1952 v Melbourne at the MCG The fast mover quickly established himself as a top half-back flanker. His ball-winning skill, judgment and ability to concentrate were obvious. He always played the game fairly but strongly, and no player tried harder to perform well. His kicking wasn’t stylish but generally it was effective. He liked to knock the ball clear of opponents and shoot after it at great speed. He won the club Best and Fairest award in his first season – an outstanding achievement in a Premiership year. Lord Somers stands beside his hat and is in uniform, no apron or other freemason regalia. Freemason Victoria coat of arms in upper left corner.

Historical information

The right honourable Lieutenant-Colonel Arthur Tennyson Somers Cocks, was born in Herefordshire. Served with distinction in the Army and was twice decorated with bravery, before being appointed as Governor of Victoria. This portrait of Lord Somers is the only one in which a Grand Master is not in masonic regalia. Lord Somers insisted he not be seen dressed in a manner which could give offence to any other organization, with which he was associated in Public Life or Private Life. He was deeply involved in the Scouting Movement and was Chief Scout in Victoria and succeeded Baden-Powell as Chief Scout of the British Commonwealth.

Significance

The portrait of Lord Somers holds great significance as it is the only painting within the Library and Museum collection of a Grand Master without his masonic regalia.

Portrait oil painting of Prince Albert on canvas stretched over stretcher/strainer. Framed in a very elaborate qilded wood and rosen frame. Heavy ornamentation on top and bottom of the frame.

Historical information

In 1870 the Earl de Grey was Grand Master of England, but his rule was short lived. After being converted to Roman Catholicism, he felt it was essential that he resign from Freemasonry as his church at the time was opposed to Freemasonry. Albert Edward Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, readily accepted nomination as Grand Master of England and continued in office until his Accession in 1901.

Significance

This portrait the Prince of Wales was painted by Thomas Flintoff. It is held within a very elaborate gilded frame which comes apart in 3 sections and is one of only two known types existing.

Historical information

Sir Dallas Brooks, was Victoria's' longest serving Governor and Grand Master. Born in Cambridge England in 1896, his interest in becoming a Freemason was expressed whilst in England however he chose to wait until he became Governor of Victoria to be initiated. Sir Dallas Brooks held the position of Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of Victoria from 1951 to 1963. He was a popular Grand Master and Governor and although he was unable to commit as much time as he would have like to Freemasonry, he participated where possible.

Significance

This portrait was painted by Joshua Smith and the only painting created by this artist.

In 1960, the World Assembly of Youth (WAY) conference was held in Accra, Ghana. The Australian YCW sent two delegates to the conference, Ernie Smith (back row, end right) and Betty King (second row, third from left). Around 400 representatives of youth organisations - including national YCW movements - from around the globe attended the conference. This photograph shows the YCW delegates the WAY 1960.

Significance

Father Ernie Smith, initiated the establishment of the Sacred Heart Mission in St Kilda, Melbourne. This photograph is copied from his personal collection.

Historical information

Petrol rationing was introduced in 1940 as Australia, which produced no oil of its own and had inadequate storage facilities, had only three months’ supply at the start of the War and depended on the procurement of stocks from overseas and their safe arrival. Rationing was introduced to ensure fair access by everyone to scarce goods. Ration books containing coupons were distributed and in the case of petrol entitled the owner to a monthly ration.

THE CONSTITUTION OF MUNICIPALITIES GENERALLY. DIVISION 1. INCORPORATION AND GOVERNMENT OF MUNICIPALITIES AND BOUNDARIES OF DISTRICTS. 8. (1) The inhabitants of every shire borough town and city inhabitants of for the time being subject to the provisions of this Act shall, under corporation. the name of the president councillors and ratepayers of such shire N°-5203 «• '• the mayor councillors and burgesses of such borough the mayor councillors and burgesses of such town or the mayor councillors and citizens of such city as the case may be, be a body corporate with perpetual succession and a common seal with power to break alter and change the same from time to time with the approval of the Governor in Council and shall by such name be capable in law of suing and being sued, of purchasing holding and alienating land, and of doing and suffering subject to the provisions of this Act all such other acts and things as bodies corporate may by law do and suffer. (2) The corporation of ******** Shire Common Seal 54. The common seal of the municipality shall be kept in a box having two locks, of one of which locks the chairman of the municipality shall have a key and of the other of which locks the key shall be kept by the municipal clerk; and the corporate seal shall not be affixed to any document unless the chairman of the municipality and one other member of the council or in the absence of such chairman unless two councillors be present. 91. The Council’s Common Seal (1) The Chief Executive Officer must ensure the security of the Council's common seal at all times. (2) The Council's common seal may only be used on the authority of the Council given either generally or specifically and every document to which the seal is affixed must be signed by the Chief Executive Officer or a senior officer authorised by him or her. (3) Any person who uses the Council's common seal without authority is guilty of an offence. (4) Any person who uses any replica of the council’s seal without authority is guilty of an offence.

Significance

The Numurkah Shire was amalgamated into the Moira Shire and the seal now redundant. This is the only Numurkah Shire Common Seal in existence.

Honour Roll - Kilcunda Road School Honor Roll

Honour roll of varnished wood, with three panels, an undulating shaped pediment, plain columns at sides, painted gold text and the Australian Imperial Forces insignia on base.

Historical information

This WWI Honor Roll was originally displayed in the Kilcunda Road State School (no.3337), which was located at the north east corner of the intersection of the Bena - Kongwak and Buchanans' Roads, Bena, Victoria, 3946. The school was located amongst the cypress trees at 645 Bena-Kongwak Road. The school was relocated in 2008 to the Coal Creek Community Park and Museum, 12 Silkstone Road, Korumburra, 3950 to become the Masonic Lodge building in the park display. On the west side of the intersection of the Bena - Kongwak and Buchanans' Roads is a brass plaque on a granite boulder with the following inscription TO COMMEMORATE THE DISTRICT OF KILCUNDA ROAD First Surveyed 1879. This is the site of the KILCUNDA ROAD UNITING CHURCH 1911 to 1966. Diagonally opposite at 645 Bena-Kongwak Road was the site of the KILCUNDA ROAD PRIMARY SCHOOL No: 3337, 1902 to 1975. Erected by The School Mother’s Club continuing as The Kilcunda Road Social Club 2008.

Significance

One of the few remaining historic items from Kilcunda Road settlement.

Wooden box containing metal stick stamps with numeral or letter on the tip with tray insert to hold the sticks.

Historical information

The small box was donated to THS by the Trentham Police Station. The set was used to mark with a serial number objects belonging to community members for identification in case of items being lost or stolen. For example items such as bicycles were often marked. This service was in association with the Neighbourhood Watch program.

Significance

This item adds to our collection as an example of work carried out by local Police.

Historical information

Originally located on large oak reading table in the Rowden White Library until the end of 2003. Replaced by brass versions made by Thomas Mintsenikos on 26th May 2004.

Significance

In 1938 Dr Alfred E. Rowden White contributed 1,000 pounds and his own personal book collection to the University of Melbourne Student Union to establish the library that still bears his name. Rowden White's idea was that students should have access to materials beyond those prescribed for their courses. As Library Rule No. 7 stated, 'Except under exceptional circumstances, the room MUST NOT BE USED AS A WRITING ROOM'
