In 1984 the Scottish the Scottish Australian Heritage Council held a national competition to design an Australian tartan. The winner, Melbourne architect John Reid, designed a tartan using the colours of the Australian landscape: ochre, terracotta, black, white and cobalt blue. These were superimposed on the pattern of the Macquarie tartan sett, appropriately, as Lachlan Macquarie was the first Scottish and civil governer of the of Australia, from 1810 to 1821. In 1996 a vest was designed and made using the Australian tartan, as a uniform for the National Wool Museum's honorary staff. Yields information about the 1962 proposal of the SEC to closure the Ballarat tramway system.Newspaper - The Courier - Saturday 5 Feb. 1962, 28 pages with an article on the front page titled "Ballarat to Lose Trams if SEC Edict Stands". Advises that a formal notice by the Minister for Electrical Undertakings Mr. Reid was tabled the previous day after the SEC served the notice upon the Minister. At the time of the report, no date had been advised. The article reports that the Council will consider the matter at its meeting of the following Monday night. The khaki shirt has District and Scout Membership badges and length-of-service badges, the Australian Scout Badge and a Red Cross First Aid badge. The leather belt has a collection of Jamboree souvenir metal badges attached. A ‘lemon squeezer’ felt hat completes the outfit. The hat badge and plume was coloured to indicate to which Section the wearer belonged, purple indicating the Commissioner Section. To keep the brim flat, the hat was sometimes kept in a timber frame when not being worn. This uniform was worn by Desley Reid as Assistant District Commissioner of Kew District between 1993 and 1995.The scouting movement has a rich history on Kew. The Kew Historical Society has attempted to build this section of the collection in recognition of its importance. The uniform was donated by an office bearer of the Society who, as a women, held a key role in the district.Short-sleeved, collarless fabric shirt of khaki color, with embroidered badges. This is a typical school magazine which documents the activities and people who were associated as either studens of staff during 1959. It records through photographs sporting teams such as football, basketball, softball, hockey and baseball. There are also staff photographs and lists of staff and their duties. The barge was floated downstream about a mile, but lost time caused the operations to cease. Following testing, a new mine was established by diverting Reid's Creek at a cost of £25,000. Settling dams were built, one of which held 1,935,900 cubic feet. Sold earth banks, built against a wall of stringy bark saplings constructed and laced with vertical props, were built. In 1914, the company was reformed as Cock’s Pioneer Gold and Tin Mines NL, another power station was constructed at the western end of the township, near the junction of Clear and Reid's Creeks. From 6,800,000 cubic yards of material processed, the returns were 64,397 ounces of gold and 855 ton of tin. Cocks Pioneer mine then moved the barge downs stream and continued sluicing. One of 2 volumes of late 19th early 20th Century letter books. Each volume provides us with extensive listings of correspondence with supporters, fundraisers, patrons, architects, Mission staff and business transactions carried out by the Honorary Secretary Mr WHC Darvall over the period of a decade. Queen Victoria, Governors of Victoria: Earl of Hopetoun, Lord Brassey, Sir George Sydenham Clark, Lord Talbot and Governors General: Baron Northcote, performers such as Nellie Melba, Kitty Grindley, Sir Samuel Gllott president of the Law Institute, Hugh Reid, Crawford Pasco R.N. FRGS are just a few. The late 19th C - early 20th C period covered by the 2 vol collection of correspondence records together with annual reports and minutes documents a significant transition period not only across centuries but also towards a new framework of operations for the original mid 19th C founded Mission to seamen. The death of a long-standing Chaplain, Wesleyan, Ebenezer James in 1901 eventually led to a proposed merger in 1905 which resulted in the amalgamation of the Victorian Mission with the Anglican based Mission to Seafarers under the leadership of Rev'd Gurney Goldsmith who arrived in 1905. The new Mission was launched in 1906 with a long planned and much needed new central building opened in 1907 on the Australian Wharf. Mr Darvall, in his time produced a handwritten 40 page epitomised history, drawn from annual reports and was exceptionally meticulous in his efforts to cross reference related correspondence, press clippings, report material and documents. One of 2 volumes of late 19th early 20th Century letter books. Each volume provides us with extensive listings of correspondence with supporters, fundraisers, patrons, architects, Mission staff and business transactions carried out by the Honorary Secretary Mr WHC Darvall over the period of a decade. Queen Victoria, Governors of Victoria: Earl of Hopetoun, Lord Brassey, Sir George Sydenham Clark, Lord Talbot and Governors General: Baron Northcote, performers such as Nellie Melba, Kitty Grindley, Sir Samuel Gllott president of the Law Institute, Hugh Reid, Crawford Pasco R.N. FRGS are just a few. The late 19th C - early 20th C period covered by the 2 vol collection of correspondence records together with annual reports and minutes documents a significant transition period not only across centuries but also towards a new framework of operations for the original mid 19th C founded Mission to seamen. The death of a long-standing Chaplain, Wesleyan, Ebenezer James in 1901 eventually led to a proposed merger in 1905 which resulted in the amalgamation of the Victorian Mission with the Anglican based Mission to Seafarers under the leadership of Rev'd Gurney Goldsmith who arrived in 1905. The new Mission was launched in 1906 with a long planned and much needed new central building opened in 1907 on the Australian Wharf. Mr Darvall, in his time produced a handwritten 40 page epitomised history, drawn from annual reports and was exceptionally meticulous in his efforts to cross reference related correspondence, press clippings, report material and documents. Harriett Holmes is associated with the Coghill - Holmes - Chatham family of Ascot, Victoria. Harriet was born in Leicestershire, England in 1799. She was the daughter of Henry Carter and Dorothea Madge. Harriett Holmes married Henry Holmes. They had 12 children, 4 died in infancy.
