Project Mallee Country was support provided to Operation Raleigh by members of the Army Survey Regiment during the period 4 Mar - 26 May 1987. This is the report on their activities. Colonel John Blashford-Snell and Prince Charles launched Operation Drake in 1978, running youth projects from ships circumnavigating the globe, to develop self-confidence and leadership through adventure, scientific exploration and community service. In two years 414 young people took part in the round the world voyage, working on land-based projects in 16 countries. Following the success of Operation Drake, the much more ambitious Operation Raleigh was established in 1984, and ran for five years until 1989. The Community Centre was built in the early 1950’s as an all-purpose hall for the social and recreational use of the workers and families employed on the Victorian state government Kiewa Hydro-electric scheme. The hall was originally called Mt Beauty Recreation Centre and later changed to Mt Beauty Community Centre. It has been the heart of the community for over 65 years and had a heritage listing put on it around the year 2000. The Alpine Shire secured a heritage grant and the hall was restored to its former glory in 2000. Myrtleford Ski Club is a non-commercial, family friendly club. It was one of the earliest lodges to be built at Falls Creek and was one of the earliest ski clubs formed and celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2013. In 1949, Myrtleford Ski Club obtained permission for occupancy and began planning the MSC Lodge. There were only three other huts on the mountain, Bogong Ski Club in an old Army hut, Skyline as the Ski Club of Victoria lodge and the Albury Ski Club lodge. The lodge was built mostly from donated materials. The basement was dug out and lined with stone from the Ruined Castle area, timber was cut (using cross-saws) from the Walpole properties and was milled then carted up to Falls Creek on either the Walpole or Calvert trucks. The iron on the roof was originally a tobacco kiln on Billy McNamara's property. The lodge has undergone many improvements over the years including a second storey added in the 1950’s, updating of accommodation, shower and toilet facilities to meet the changing needs of members. The lodge now caters for 38 people in a variety of shared rooms from two to eight beds per room. Toilet and shower facilities are also shared. The club has a Lodge Managers for the winter season. Myrtleford Ski Lodge was one of the earliest ski lodges built in the Falls Creek area in 1938. It is an excellent example of early sporting and community activities in the Upper Kiewa Valley area. Towong Hill Homestead is a 110-year-old Federation style mansion situated on a rock outcrop, with views of about 260 degrees. It was built over 2 years by grazier Walter Mitchell from bricks made from local clay dug from the river bank, to be the family home for his new bride Winifred. They established their home in 1904. After the death of Walter in 1917, Winifred relocated her family, but the homestead remained in the families hands. In 1935, Thomas Mitchell (1906-1984) returned home to Australia, a successful Lawyer, and married city girl, Elyne Chauvel, and settled himself back at his childhood home, Towong Hill. Thomas was a world champion slalom skier, had been a prisoner of the Japanese at Changi, and was elected for the Country Party in 1946 and served as attorney-general in the McDonald government. His wife Elayne (1913-2002) is best remembered for her Silver Brumby series of novels for children. But Elyne also wrote a substantial number of non-fiction works about the Snowy Mountains. In 1824, Hume and Hovell were the first Europeans to pass through the district and graziers soon followed, impressed by the abundance of fodder and water. The first cattle run in the area was settled in about 1838 in what was known as Swampy Plains. Later, this run became known as “Khancoban Station”. Khancoban lies in the heart of the high country and is home of Australia’s mountain cattlemen. This heritage is celebrated in Banjo Paterson’s epic poem, “The Man from Snowy River”. In 1962, Bruce and Jo Chisholm relocated from Bond Springs to Khancoban Station, which Bruce had acquired in 1959. Khancoban Hereford and thoroughbred stud progeny were keenly sought after whenever they were presented in the sale ring. Bruce imported a stallion, Comet, from England in 1964. Comet stood at Khancoban for 15 years and was the sire of numerous winners, including Cobbermine, Kelly's Eye, Boack and Starglow. The Country Women's Association of Victoria was a popular widely known organisation throughout Australia. The CWA aimed to improve health, welfare and education for women and children in the country.Each town / area in the Kiewa Valley had an active CWA. The Tawonga branch commenced in Feb. 1946 and often combined activities with other branches in the Kiewa Valley. One of their activities may have been to play cards.Green cotton square tablecloth for a fold-up card table. It has an yellow with a little bit of white embroidered circle / emblem in one corner. Inside the circle is "Victoria' and CWA (on top of each other as per the CWA emblem.) Red Cross, CWA, Bowling Club histories in Tawonga and Mt Beauty written for a book, title unknown.The histories of the Red Cross, the Country Women's Association and the bowling clubs in the towns of Tawonga and Mt Beauty are important as the communities in the Kiewa Valley were involved in these organisations for many years from the mid 1940's and in the case of the Tawonga bowling club since 1953. K2,3 and4 are of the Kiewa River and two of the bridges spanning the river along the valley. K3 and K4 would have been taken in the 1880's and show the type of trees and plant growth along the river prior to land clearing for farming. K5 is of the Running Creek Cricket Team and therefore there was sufficient population in the area to form and maintain a team as well as have other teams in the relatively near vicinity to provide competition. Note the horse drawn cart which provided transport. Date taken is unknown but possibly c 1910. The Mt. Buffalo Chalet was built in 1910 by the Victorian Government. It was Australia's first ski resort and has served generations of skiiers, hikers and families over the years. It was built for 3195 pounds and has had stories and wings added since and is the largest timber building in Australia. B4 is the earliest photo in this group as the garden is in early stages of development - the other photos show the growth of the shrubs and would be taken about c 1920. Note the cars and motor bikes. It closed in 2006. The other photos are of general interest only but interesting to see that there were donkey's grazing. There is no information as to their purpose on Mt. Buffalo. Four different Kiewa Valley families are represented in the photographs. Their descendants still live in the Valley and carry on the traditions of beef and dairy farming. Of particular interest is the photo of Miss Marjorie Clemence, the first School Teacher of Upper Gundowring School. Gundowring pastoral run was taken up in 1838 and occupied by framers in the 1860's. The area was known as Gundowring and Upper Gundowring. The Gundowring School was opened in 1871 and most likely the Upper Gundowring school would be built at the same time. It was School No. 2733 and situated in Boyd Road. It closed in 1953 when the Kiewa Consolidated School opened. The newspaper page describes the activities in which the local community of Kergunyah were in engaged in that period - Red Cross, Fire Brigade, cattle round up and some of the identities involved. The article photocopied from the Yackandandah times states that he (Norman Coad) "was sent to the Ovens District Hospital, Beechworth for treatment" which would mean that this was the closest hospital to the Kiewa Valley for emergencies in 1912.The Kiewa Valley photographs are of social significance showing two of the early bridges allowing the community easy access to both sides of the river and also the tree and plant growth before land clearing for farming. The photos of Mt. Buffalo Chalet have social, architectural and historical significance. the Chalet has been used by skiers, bush walkers and day trippers since its completion in 1910 and its closure in 2006. It is listed in the Victorian Heritage Register. The family photographs are of social and historical significance as they are of early farming families in the Kiewa Valley and also depict the dress, of both men and women) in the late 1880's. The write up in the Weekly Times has social significance as it depicts the social and farming activities and photos of the local residents from around that area. The article from the Yackandandah Times is of a personal nature with concern for the individual involved. CWA Tawonga 1946 - 1988 collection of its written history. The C.W.A. aimed to improve the health, welfare and education of women and children in the country. The book gives examples of all activities the members were involved in over the years and their involvement with other CWA groups in the North East of Victoria. William Bateman Snr was born to parents Daniel Bateman and Patience Wilkinson in Bradford, Yorkshire, England in approx. 1794. He married Sarah Smith on 20th November 1815 in Bradford, Yorkshire, England. They had four children – Patience (Born abt 1817), Daniel (born abt 1819) William (born abt 1831) & James (born abt 1837)all born in England. William Snr and Sarah Bateman and two sons – William and James - arrived in Australia in approx 1853. They brought with them considerable capital/stock and bought into a business in Warrnambool in William Jnr’s name. Bateman & Co rapidly became the largst mercantile business in the area and did rather extensive business with the Banks of Victoria and Australiasia. It is thought that William Snr assisted in the business to some extent, expecially financially. His other son Daniel (who remained in England) is also thought to have had a financial interest in the business as a dormant partner. The business was so prominent, Bateman & Co issued round copper tokens as a Trade Token - value one penny. These were inscribed with the Business name and were limited in their use to the business. In Sept 1856 the business was transferred to a Mr. Thos W. Sellars (nephew of William Bateman Jnr) and shortly afterwards the store closed with an order for the sequestration of the insolvents estate, but was not made absolute until December 1856 when the Insolvency court ruled for the “compulsory sequestration” of the business due to fraudulent activities within the business. But in the meantime in early November fire completely destroyed the business which left only the insurance payouts. Both William Bateman Snr and William Bateman Jnr are listed on the Pioneers’ Honour Board in the foyer of the Warrnambool Library. It is reported William Bateman Jnr was a trustee of Christ Church, was a City Councillor, and was involved in many other community organisations. He also subscribed towards the cost of building a permanent Church which was opened in 1856. William Bateman Snr died in Warrnambool on 30/03/1868 and his wife Sarah died in August 1868. William Bateman Jnr presented to Christ Church, stained glass windows in memory of his parents William & Sarah Bateman. William Bateman Jnr died in June 1913. Four stained glass windows, three lancet and one circular. The theme of the lancet windows depicts the three occasions when the apostles Peter, James and John were Jesus' sole attendants: The raising of Jairus' daughter. On the Mount of Transfiguration. In the Garden of Gethsemane. The circular window in the gable of the wall represents "The Enthroned Christ".

This booklet contains the address given by the Rev. W. Gray Dixon in 1909 at St. Paul’s Christchurch to the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand. It was published at the request of the General Assembly and the proceeds of the sale of the booklet went into Presbyterian Church funds. The Rev. William Gray Dixon was born in Scotland and was the Presbyterian Minister at St. John’s Warrnambool from 1889 to 1900. In 1900 he went to New Zealand to St. David’s Church, Auckland and later to Dunedin. Rev, Gray Dixon was the author of several publications relating to Presbyterian Church history and activities. This booklet was sent from Auckland by Rev. Gray Dixon to Marcus Saltau, his friend in Warrnambool. Marcus Saltau (1869-1945)followed his father in the produce business in Warrnambool and expanded it to include management of the Warrnambool tramway (which took freight from the town to the port) and a shipping business that had its own vessels and an interstate and international trade. Marcus Saltau was prominent in Warrnambool’s community as a Councillor, Mayor and a politician (Upper House Member for the Western Province 1924-1940). He was a founding member of the Warrnambool Woollen Mill Company, concerned with the establishment of the Nestles Factory at Dennington and a Warrnambool Hospital committee member and Chairman for over 30 years. The Jean Buick Saltau Maternity Ward and Marcus Saltau House at the Warrnambool Hospital survived as important community buildings for many years. This little booklet is of high significance as it is connected to two important Warrnambool people of the past – the Rev. William Gray Dixon and Marcus Saltau. It is the only Gray Dixon piece of writing that the Historical Society possesses and it is of double significance when it is noted that Marcus Saltau, the owner of the booklet was a friend of Gray Dixon’s, and was also a most important person in Warrnambool’s history. This is a soft-cover booklet of 22 pages. The cover which is completely detached and very torn is grey-coloured with dark blue and grey ornamental scrolls and shields around the title of the book. The book contains a portrait of John Calvin, three black and white photographs of places in Geneva, the music of a song, ‘The Marseillaise of the Reformation’ and some verse. The book was stapled but the staples have been removed. The pages are made of lightweight parchment paper. The illustrations have been glued in. The text is a publication of an address given by the author, Rev. W. Gray Dixon to the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand in 1909. This label accompanied a bottle of Dr Bright’s Phosphodyne. It was a form of medicine also known as ozonic oxygen which was developed and patented in 1869 by Dr Charles Bright, a 19th century Resident Surgeon at St Mary’s Hospital London, The medicine claimed to ease ‘indigestion, liver complaints, nervous debility, female complaints, premature decline, local weakness and spermatorrhea’. It was widely sold by chemists throughout Australia in the 19th century and in this case was supplied by the Warrnambool chemist, James Astley Bromfield. He was a significant person in Warrnambool’s history as he produced the 1856 map of the Warrnambool district showing all the original landholders, a seminal resource for historians today. Bromfield had a chemist shop in Warrnambool from 1854 to the late 1880s, initially in Timor Street and then in Liebig Street (number 80 and later number 78). Bromfield was very active in local community affairs. This label is of considerable interest as it shows the use in the 19th century of medicine that today would be labelled ‘quack’. It is of particular interest as it was supplied by James Astley Bromfield’s chemist shop and he is an important early identity in Warrnambool, involved in many activities in the town. He was a Justice of the Peace, a Trustee of the Savings Bank, Chairman of the Western Steam Navigation Company, a Director of the Gasworks and on the committees of the Harbour Committee, the Fire Brigade and the Anglers Protection Society. He was a Warrnambool Councillor (1858-60; 1865-1870) and a Shire Councillor (1875-1883). This is a sheet of paper that accompanied a bottle of Dr Brights’ Phosphodyne medicine. This book works through a number of exercises with photographs illustrating the exercises. It was owned by W R Angus who was a doctor in Warrnambool coming to the city in 1939. He served during the war as a general surgeon and after the war took up ophthalmology as a speciality. He was a member of the state council of the AMA. he was keenly interested in cultural and civic activities and served on a number of community groups during his time in Warrnambool. He died in Cairns in 1970. The book itself was written by Staff Sergt Alfred Moss and was a popular resource for exercising and body building in the early part of the 20th century. At one time he was known as the strongest man in the British army.A book that is linked to a well- known Warrnambool resident and professional. In 1886 the Remington family business was sold but the name was retained and typewriters with the Remington Rand brand name were sold from 1927 on. Typewriters have now been replaced by computers. This box of equipment belonged to Dr Horace Holmes who would have used a typewriter in his medical practice in Warrnambool in the first half of the 20th century and perhaps would also have used a typewriter in the activities of the many community groups with which he was associated. Horace Iles Holmes (1877-1959) was born and educated in Tasmania and he completed a medical degree at the University of Melbourne. He commenced a practice in Warrnambool in 1906 and was the honorary Medical Officer at the Warrnambool Hospital and Warrnambool’s Health Officer. His practice was at ‘Ierne’ at the corner of Spence and Kepler Streets. He was an early member of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons and was prominent in community affairs (foundation President of Warrnambool Rotary Club, a member of the Warrnambool Masonic Lodge for over 50 years, a Warrnambool Hospital Committee member, a long-term Trustee of the Warrnambool Methodist Church and President of the Lyndoch Hostel for the Aged Committee. Dr Holmes also had agricultural interests and enjoyed fishing, bowls and golf. This box of typewriter equipment is of interest as an item in the collection of Horace Iles Holmes, a doctor who was prominently associated with the professional and community life of Warrnambool for over 50 years. Warrnambool has never done justice to the women who shared their menfolk the hardships of the pioneering days. Silent Lives fills a void in the history of Warrnambool and surrounding districts, during the early decades 1840s to 1910, providing a narrative about some of the people, in particular women, missing so far in our documented history. Elizabeth O'Callaghan has meticulously researched the period, drawing on early newspapers, diaries, letters, unpublished family histories, honour board listings as well as public documents such as hotel licensing and teacher records held in the Public Record Office of Victoria and State Library of Victoria.
