Wooden pulley wheel section from the wreck “Newfield”. The Newfield was a three-masted iron and steel barque, built in Dundee, Scotland, in 1889 by Alexander Stephen and Sons. It was owned by the Newfield Ship Company in 1890 and later that year It was registered in Liverpool to owners Brownells and Co. The Newfield left Sharpness, Scotland, on 28th May 1892 with a crew of 25 under the command of Captain George Scott and on 1st June left Liverpool. She was bound for Brisbane, Australia, with a cargo of 1850 tons of fine rock salt, the main export product of Sharpness. At about 9pm on 28th August 1892, in heavy weather, Captain Scott sighted, between heavy squalls, the Cape Otway light on the mainland of Victoria but, due to a navigational error (the ship’s chronometers were wrong), he assumed it to be the Cape Wickham light on King Island, some 40 miles south. He altered his course to the north, expecting to enter Bass Strait. The ship was now heading straight for the south west Victorian coast and at about 1:30am ran aground on a reef about 100 yards from shore and one mile east of Curdie’s Inlet, Peterborough. The ship struck heavily three times before grounding on an inner shoal with 6 feet of water in the holds. Rough sea made the job of launching lifeboats very difficult. The first two lifeboats launched by the crew were smashed against the side of the ship and some men were crushed or swept away. The third lifeboat brought eight men to shore. It capsized when the crew tried to return it to the ship for further rescue The Port Campbell rocket crew arrived and fired four rocket lines, none of which connected with the ship. A local man, Peter Carmody, volunteered to swim one mile to the ship with a line to guide the fourth and final lifeboat safely to shore. Seventeen men survived the shipwreck but the captain and eight of his crew perished. The Newfield remained upright on the reef with sails set for a considerable time as the wind slowly ripped the canvas to shreds and the sea battered the hull to pieces. The Marine Board inquiry found the wreck was caused by a "one man style of navigation" and that the Captain had not heeded the advice of his crew. According to Jack Loney ‘… when the drama was over . . the Newfield was deserted except for the Captain’s dog and two pigs.’ Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum has several artefacts that have been salvaged from the wreck. The Newfield collection meets the following criteria for assessment: Criteria A: Importance to the course, or pattern, of Victoria’s cultural history Criteria B: Possession of uncommon, rare or endangered aspects of Victoria’s cultural history Criteria C: Potential to yield information that will contribute to an understanding of Victoria’s cultural history This item is an oval-shaped brown and orange wooden shell from a ship’s pulley. The original wooden material is now petrified but the lighter coloured concentric rings of the wood's grain are still visible. A metal sheave or drum is fitted into the centre hole and some of the edge of its sheave’s collar has corroded and broken away. The collar has three holes of equal size that are evenly spaced around it. The bearing ring is now detached but still connected to the pulley with a string on which a label is attached. Most of the six cylindrical metal roller bearings are sand encrusted but some are still visible. This ledger contains the names of clients and financial entries of business transactions of an unknown person or firm in the Warrnambool district from 1913 to 1916. The amounts recorded and the names on the loose sheets suggest the cash book may be connected to a stock and station agent of that era. This cash book is of minor interest as the name of the business involved is unknown. The mase of clients listed may be of some use to researchers.This is a ledger of 300 pages. The cover, made of brown hard board with a composite material covering, has a brown leather-covered spine. with a label almost indecipherable. The cover is torn and dirty and in parts missing the covering material The pages have ruled red lines with handwritten entries in blue and black ink. It is not clear that this fringe was ever attached to the curtain suite; it may have come from an associated part of the original ensemble (eg pelmet) or from associated furniture. However, it is certainly connected to the fringe on the tieback tassels, whose tassels are finished with the same product. The detached gilt metal fringe has aesthetic significance as specimen of an opulent furnishing decoration in very lavish contexts, such as gold rush Victoria. Part of it still preserves the original bright gold metal, ie is untarnished; this is probably quite rare in Australian collections.Board wrapped w c.17m of heavy gilt metal fringe (known as bullion fringe) in several pieces, evidently detached from curtains, and/or furniture items. (No sign of it having been attached to the curtains). The fringe is composed of metallic thread very tightly wound over a cotton/linen thread, attached to a narrow header braid with an ornamental design worked in metallic gimp cord. The colour was originally gold, now tarnished on all parts exposed to air, but sections of the fringe under the top layers retain the luxurious gold finish. Westman (2019: 242) explains that 'gold thread' was made of gold fired onto silver bars from which thin, flat or round wires were cut to wrap around a core linen thread for use in trimmings. Shen notes that the very thin layer of gold often wears away, exposing the silver which tarnishes. Bullion fringe: fringe made of bullion, in the sense of precious metal, used for prestigious royal, ecclesiastical and military garments and furnishings. Westman (2019: 193, 240) says that by the 19thC, the name was also used for twisted thread long fringe made of wool, silk, cotton or a mix, as it is today. These large tubs had multiple uses including washing clothes or bathing infants or children when water was not connected to the laundry or home in the early 1900's. The water was recycled by pouring it on the garden or fruit trees. It was used for containing crop harvesting too.A large vintage round galvanised iron tub tapering slightly to the flat base. This booklet, produced in 1970 was to commemorate it being 50 years since Chelsea was proclaimed a city.Five (5) page booklet with white cardboard covering with black text at top and bottom and a blue and red coat of arms for the City of Chelsea in the centre. Schuss was advertised as Victoria’s Official Ski Journal It was issued monthly from 1935 to 1961 except during the war when summer issues covered two months. This continued after the war, but it averaged 10 issues annually over its 25 year life. Schuss was published by the Ski Club of Victoria which had a membership of 38 Ski Clubs and demanded to be recognised as the prime authority on skiing in the state. The other 30 ski clubs with 85% of the members disagreed and the politics of skiing became heated. These clubs formed the Federation of Victorian Ski Clubs with their own journal, Ski Horizon. With the establishment of the Victorian Ski Association, Ski-Horizon published its last issue in Nov - Dec. 1955 and the role of the official journal was fully taken over by “Schuss”. This item is significant because it contains stories, images and information documenting the development of the ski facilities at Falls Creek.The journal includes stories and events chronicling developments in Victoria and internationally. Robert James Minnitt introduced the concept of self-administered analgesia, using an apparatus designed and built in conjunction with London scientific instrument-maker, Charles King. The Johnstone family were connected with the Craiglea Winery in Sunbury from 1864 to 1883. It was established by James Johnston, the father of Wilfred Henry. The whippletree consists of a loose horizontal bar between the draught animal and its load. The centre of the bar is connected to the load, and the traces, chains or straps on each side of the harness, attached to its ends. Whippletrees are used when pulling a dragged load such as a plough, harrow, or log. Many of the early sewing machines were powered by a treadle mechanism. The treadle was operated by pressing down on it with a foot, or both feet, to cause a rocking movement.
