Series of 9 black and white photographs of the traffic congestion in the CBD during 1951. .1 - view looking south along Spencer St from Collins St showing the VR Head office, and the railway viaduct with a Berger Paint advertisement, Has one wide body tram with dash canopy lighting and three W2's. Also one small bus. Has "G3" in pencil on rear. .2 - similar view but with a different vehicle mix - W2 317 (Richmond Route 28), an SW6 route 27 and another W2 (route 41). Includes one large truck carrying Land Rover boxes. Typed on rear "Enlargement of No. 72 - Sheet No. 26 (Report P25/1/8) and in ink initials and "For Testing Engs 1/11/51". .3 - View looking north along Swanston St Princes Bridge with a route 6 tram and Princes Bridge Station and St Pauls Cathedral. Coloured postcard of the view from Little Collins St looking north along Elizabeth St. Has a northbound cable tram and several horse-drawn wagons in the view. In the view are the GPO, Newing's Artists materials, Royal Arcade, and Turner's bicycles. The letter is dated 8/12 from an Eck in Toorak addressed to Doris Ettelson in Ballarat. The stamp used was introduced in 1913 by the Commonwealth Government as the first National stamp - see reference. Card published by C T Melbourne. postcard - titled "The Corner of Lydiard and Sturt Streets Ballarat Vic", photo looks southwest from the Post Office steps towards the southwest corner - has Craigs Hotel, National Mutual Life, town hall shops including Anderson Printer and the Town Hall in the picture along with Robbie Burns statue. The Rose Series Postcard No. P 1783. An ESCo tram is parked at the tram stop - No. 5? Several horse-drawn and motor vehicles are in the photograph. Wal Jack has dated the photo about 1930 on the rear of the postcard and about 1929 in his album notes - see item 5126 for the digital image. Photograph - black and white. Photograph of Pall Mall, Bendigo, 1857, taken from View Point. The following notes were written on the back in pencil by Frederick Douglas Jones, Solicitor. 'Bendigo, 1857. Bank of Victoria, View St., in foreground. '23' was afterwards Grant's Confectionery shop next 'Abbot's New Times.' The Victoria Hotel became the National Bank of Australasia. The Colonial Bank of Australia is next to the left. 'Edmondson's and the building next Colonial. Bank., became the Bendigo Arcade. The 2 story building to right of the Victoria Hotel became the Stock Exchange as auction room of Shadrach E.R.Jones who was also a Doctor of Medicine. Building to left of the Colonial. Bank was the shop of J.Nelson Jones Chemist afterwards a Brewer, he came to Australia 1848 and died in Ararat 9/1/14 (88). Denis Gibbons (1937 – 2011) Trained with the Australian Army, before travelling to Vietnam in January 1966, Denis stayed with the 1st Australian Task Force in Nui Dat working as a photographer. For almost five years Gibbons toured with nine Australian infantry battalions, posting compelling war images from within many combat zones before being flown out in late November 1970 after sustaining injuries. The images held within the National Vietnam Veterans Museum make up the Gibbons Collection. A black and white photograph of an oblique view of 7 RAR Fire Support Base, housing the Battalions direct artillery support, 106 Battery. The FSB also contained the Battalion's mortar platoon. The guns and mortars were 'on the open' and the Battalion elements can be seen, under cover, in the 'scrub'.
