The Golden Square Rural Training School began in 1945, to train trainee teachers attending the Bendigo Teachers' College. Rural school relocated to Gander Reserve in 1952. Researched by Ken Curnow, Rural 1 student 1958 - 1964. The redundant Bristol building was relocated to the scout reserve at Koolamurt. Black and white reproduction of photo from 'Back to Eaglehawk' back Oct. 1928. Large group of children, four adults in background. Outside. Banisters in background, brick wall at side. Approximately ninety children, youngest ones seated on ground at front, cross-legged. Inscriptions: on front - 'California Hill State School, 1928', 'JH Biggs, Health Inspector'. RHSV stamp (under photo). California Hill State School. 'The California Gully State School (or the Bell topper Hill, as the old Cornish miners names it) is one of the oldest in the district. Some of the prominent men of Bendigo today who attended that school include Cr. JH Curnow, Mr Jtn Smalley, and Mr EE Heitman. Mr. George Evans, a native of the district, is now in charge of the school. Miss FE Darvall is the head of the infant division. Other teachers are Miss RE Nicholas and Mr WR McClelland. Newspaper clippings and a photograph. Death notices for THOMPSON, Edward (Ted) Colton, died 15/12/1988, formerly of Bendigo, husband of Queenie and a photo of Ted, dated 1947. Newspaper clippings of 'Chemistry Teacher dies', Mr Richard Gaston Walker, died 14/01/?? A chemistry instructor, 50 years of teaching, he was known world wide, during WW1, he was given an important post in England handling chemistry projects in the war effort. On his return to Australia, he became attached to the Bendigo Technical College,(known as the School of Mines) for more than 40 years. On file there is a Richard Gaston Walker died 1965, aged 72, Death Reg.No.1953). Newspaper photo of Richard's son, David G.Walker, Member of the Order of Australia in the Australia Day Honours List. St. Liborius Catholic scholl No 262 began construction in June 1904, with the foundations stone being laid 19th June 1904 by the Most Rev S Reville, Lord Bishop of Sandhurst. On January 18, 1875, Mr R.A. Nicholson opened Charlton's first school. On the first day of school he wrote to the education department stating that 42 children were in attendance and also sent in a request for the Minister of Education to supply the "much needed accommodation" which had been promised to him some time ago as there was only a bark hut 18 feet by 10 feet for present purposes. Three weeks later, Mr Nicholson wrote again to the Education Department, sending in the above photograph of the bark hut as a photographer had recently been in the area. He once again stressed his need for a more suitable building.
