Photograph, J E Barnes, John F. McCrae, Mayor [of Kew] 1910-11, 1910
Kew achieved independence from the Boroondara Roads Board in 1860. As a new municipality, its first three leaders were designated as chairmen. On becoming a borough in 1863, its leaders were identified as mayors. The earliest photographs date from ca.1906, when the Town of Kew commissioned the noted local photographer Josiah E Barnes to produce standardised portraits of former mayors to be displayed in the Mayoral Chamber of the Town Hall. The collection also includes photographs by other well-known photographic studios such as Burlington Studios, Melba – Melbourne, Stuart Tompkins, Spencer Shier and Talma & Co. The majority of mounts identify the photographer. Eighty photographs are housed in their original frames. This portrait is one of a series of mounted and framed photographic portraits of mayors and town clerks of the former Borough, Town and City of Kew. The portraits were transferred by the City of Kew to the Kew Historical Society in March 1989. A Significance Assessment in 2018, funded by the National Library of Australia confirmed the historic, and often artistic significance of the series.Framed portrait of Cr. John F. McCrae, Mayor of Kew 1910-11. The mounting and framing of the photograph follows a typical layout or style in that each is framed in dark wood, glazed, and laid down on an inscribed board. The inscription identifies the name of the mayor and the year/s that he/she served.[Inscription] "John F. McCrae, Mayor 1910-11" [Photographer] "J.E. This is an example of Melbourne Legacy promotional material. It was used in newspaper advertising and also printed on milk cartons. The slogan "Lest YOU forget" was used with an image of the statue of Simpson and his donkey rather than a personality. The newspaper advertising varied slightly, from 'Buy a badge on Friday 7th September' to 'Legacy Says Thank You' when it was published on 14 September. It was in a folder with marketing material from the 1990s also see item 01250. The slogan "Lest YOU forget" was used with an image of the statue of Simpson and his donkey rather than a personality. The main time of year for fundraising is September when Legacy holds 'Badge Week'. Often there is a celebrity who gives his or her time as 'Personality of the Year'. Sir Albert Arthur Dunstan, KCMG was an Australian politician. A member of the Country Party (now National Party of Australia), Dunstan was the 33rd Premier of Victoria. His term as Premier was the second-longest in the state's history, behind Sir Henry Bolte. Dunstan, who was Premier from 2 April 1935 to 14 September 1943 and again from 18 September 1943 to 2 October 1945, was the first Premier of Victoria to hold that office as a position in its own right, and not just an additional duty taken up by the Treasurer, Attorney General, or Chief Secretary. In the 1955 elections an almost unknown sheep farmer from the bush, Henry Bolte, became premier. His long, uninterrupted Liberal rule was a seminal period in Victoria`s history, not least for the unprecedented development of the hitherto languishing state and the political stability that his election in 1955 delivered. There was a chaotic political culture in Victoria before Bolte was elected. It was effectively a national joke with one minority government in 1943 lasting just five days and another in 1952 lasting only four.Statue of Henry Bolte and Sir Allbert Dunstantreasury gardens, statue, henry bolte, albert dunstan, premier -

Document, Colony of Victoria, Gold License, 1852
From 1851 the Victorian government required all men on Victorian Goldfields to carry a Gold License. The fee was one pound per month, and was payable in advance. There was agitation surrounding the gold license which was thought to be an excessive fee and did not give the bearer right to representation. On 03 December 1854 the gold diggers on the Eureka Lead fought a short battle against the army and police troopers. A few months later a new system of taxing gold diggers was introduced - the Miner's Right. The Gold License c allowed the bearer to 'dig, search for, and remove gold on and from any Crown Lands' within the district specified on the license. The license was not transferable, and had to be produced on demand. This has resulted in most surviving licenses showing evidence of having been folded and kept in a pocket. The Victorian Gold Licence was issued from 1851 until early 1855. Every man on a Victorian goldfield had to carry a valid gold license, so few survived the harsh treatment of being carried around a working goldfield. There was much dissatisfaction about what was thought to be an unfair mining tax (or gold license). On 29 November 1854 Ballarat miners burnt their licenses on Bakery Hill. On 3 December 1854 the Eureka Stockade Battle took place, resulting in the Goldfields Commission. The first Miner's Right was issued in late June 1855, and in July the first Local Courts were elected by miner's right holders. This gold license was issued around one year after the issue of the first Victorian gold license in August 1851, making it a rare early survivor. This fold lines on this Gold License are evidence of being carried around by the bearer. A original Victorian paper gold license glued onto on old card poster. The original colour of the paper was pale blue. The license has undergone conservation treatment and has been removed from the card.'231', '9 Nov 1852', [name illegible], 'Lod dist [Loddon District?], [Commissioner illegible - probably M. Sculpture, 'Mungo Moon' by Don Barrett, 2015
'Mungo Moon' by Don Barrett is the first sculpture erected on the Churchill Art and Culture Pathway. It was officially unveiled by Professor David Battersby on 15 April 2015 From Churchill & District News 16 October 2014 The Churchill Art and Culture Walking Pathway will have its official public opening on Saturday October 18, with a walk finishing at Federation University Australia’s Switchback Gallery at the Federation University Gippsland Campus. ... An important link on the newly developed pathway was recently completed with a path south of the FedUni Student West Residences. The path now allows walkers to turn off the Eel Hole Creek path before reaching Glendonald Estate and to follow a picturesque, tree lined walkway to join up with the footpath on the Eastern side of Northways Road. From there the footpath joins into Federation University’s network of walking paths that proceeds past the Switchback Art Gallery, down through the pine plantation and along Lake Kretlow and the Churchill Golf Course. Project Manager Mike Answerth, said the opening of the West Residences section of the path means there is now only one short link to complete. “We’re now very close to realising the project’s objective to join up all these walking paths to provide a continuous pathway that encompasses town, campus and parkland. The next stage of the project will be the completion of Latrobe City’s East West Link and the enhancement of the walking path with artistic and cultural features.” said Mr. Answerth. Head of Federation University Australia Gippsland Campus, Dr Harry Ballis, said the project had been made possible through the contributions of the five former Gippsland Education Precinct (GEP) partners. “The Art and Culture Pathway represents another important step in joining the Churchill township and the university campus as a physical and social entity,” Dr Ballis said. “This was an initiative of the GEP and it is pleasing to see it coming to fruition.” The path now reaches as far as the golf driving range but plans are already under way to connect with the Mathison Park board walk and pathway, which surrounds Lake Hyland in Churchill. When the loop is completed, residents and visitors will have an approximately 5km circular walking path which links up the Churchill town centre, Federation University Australia and Mathison Park. There are already art features along this route, including primary schools’ Bug Blitz totems near the Kurnai College school crossing, native vegetation and history panels near the Hare Homestead in Mathison Park, and outdoor sculptures in the pine trees near the Federation University Switchback Gallery. contemporaryA large sculpture in five pieces set in an external location. It is part of the Churchill Art and Culture Walking Pathway. Don Barrett’s work is mainly in concrete with added coloured oxides to portray the feeling of the Australian landscape. Barrett focuses on concepts of Australia’s short history and indigenous history. churchill art and culture pathway, barrett, don barrett, gippsland campus, federation university, churchill, sculpture -
