Administrative record - The Land Act 1869
The Victorian Parliament passed Land Acts in 1860, 1862 and 1869, which offered settlers land within defined agricultural areas. Settlers paid for half of an allotment on selection at a uniform price of £1 per acre and paid rent on the other half for usually 7 years. By the end of the period, to obtain title to the land, settlers would have had to pay the balance of the purchase price and make certain improvements. Document, Borough of Kew / Gazetted Streets, 1865-1937
The Melbourne suburb of Kew gained independence from the Boroondara Roads Board in 1860, being declared a Municipality in that year. Kew became a Borough in 1863, a Town in 1910, and a City in 1921. The former City of Kew became part of a newly declared City of Boroondara in 1994. This very fragile document records the following information about streets in Kew - Name, Total Width, Width of Carriageway, Description, Government Gazetted - Year & Page. While the name of a street was formally acknowledged and published in the Victorian Government Gazettes, this document, compiled by a public officer, probably in the Town Clerk's Department, is the earliest known local record listing street names in the Borough, later Town, then City of Kew. The front page indicates that in 1865, the responsibility for an initial 36 streets in Kew was taken over by Council. The final annotation in the document was made in 1937. The document is an important record for researchers seeking to understand the dating of streets in the district.27-page document compiled by officers of the Borough, Town and City of Kew, listing the names of streets taken over by Council, and providing details of their proportions and gazettiing. Photograph, 34 Union Road, Surrey Hills - home of the Kleinert family
This was built in 1905 and was the home of William and Emily Kleinert from 1905. William was a coach-builder, wheelwright and blacksmith. He moved from Prahran to Surrey Hills. His son Ernest worked with him as a coach painter and also worked as a painter undertaking intricate hand painting on early cars. Their other son Martin played for the Surrey Hills Football Club. In return for the support given to the club by Mrs Emily Kleinert, the club built a rotunda in South Surrey Park as a memorial to her. Alan Holt research: Lot 6 was sold to Martin Kleinert by Karl Richter in 1860 together with a portion of another adjacent lot. From 1860-1885 Martin worked it as a market garden leasing some land for grazing when it was not required for gardening. He died in 1898. In a formal document, William declared he was the son of Martin "who purchased land in 1860, died in 1898 and the land has been continually occupied by father and family since. It has been cultivated as a market garden; when not being used for gardening it was let for cultivation and grazing." William died in 1939 and the property passed to his sons Martin and Ernest. The Kleinert land extended from Union Road to Essex Road. They ran horses, ducks and fowls and Emily Kleinert grew flowers. The Kleinert property later became the South Surrey Park. The family sold the land to the Camberwell Council in the 1950s. Ernest and Ida Kleinert lived on the corner of Scotsdale and Warrigal Roads. The donor of the photo Nada Harris, nee Kleinert, was Ernest and Ida's daughter. Cake Stand, Beginning of the 20th Century
This cake stand was hand turned from osage orange wood. The wood was sourced from a grove of osage orange trees in the Fisken/Taverner Street area. This grove was planted by Mr A C Simon, an orchardist, who brought the seeds from North America in the 1860's to create a protective hedge for his plants The wood from these plants produces a beautiful toned affect of dark brown and yellow/orange when turned and polished. The significance of this cake stand is that it has been carved from the osage orange which grows well in Bacchus Marsh although originated in America. Mr Simon made many items from this wood. This gives it local significance. This polished wooden stand would have been used for cake to be displayed It consists of a round 'plate' of wood as the top, with a fine narrow turned wood pedestal and a round base. The stand is made of osage orange giving it the unique tones of dark brown and orange wood.turned wood, osage orange, food stand, food display, brown orange wood, wooden, cake stand, parlour item, table centre piece, polished wood, ornamental stand -

Parks Victoria - Gabo Island Lightstation
Jar
The glazed stoneware pot is an oyster jar made by Powell potteries, Bristol, probably between 1860 and 1880. Pickled oysters were a regular food of the poor in England in the 19thc. Sam Weller, Charles Dickens’ character in Pickwick Papers (1836-37) commented that ‘Poverty and oysters always seen to go together’. In England, pickling oysters for transport to inland towns and long voyages became an industry. The jar was found in sand near the jetty in 1999.Whatever their provenance, they have an association with an event or activity on Gabo Island and for this reason have second level contributory significance for their potential to yield information relating to the cultural history of the lightstation.Ceramic jar. Squat shape, body of jar is cream coloured. Spots of mildew on side. The jar has a pronounced lip, short neck, sloping shoulders and rounded body. Just below the shoulder, the glaze colour changes from brown to stone."POWEL &DB Stol" -

Memorabilia - paper, Mayfield Presbyterian Church, Mernda, 150 years Anniversary Memorabilia
The Mayfield Presbyterian Church at Mernda was erected in 1860, and the first service held on 23 October that year. The erection of the Mayfield Church, and others at Janefield and Whittlesea soon after, reflected the relatively large number of Scots in the Plenty Valley in the 1850s. Mayfield Church was built on an acre of land, apparently donated by Moses Thomas. It is not clear who designed and built the Mayfield Church, although it has been generally accepted that it was Moses Thomas. For a short time the newly completed church was called the Guthrie Church, after the prominent Scottish Free Church Leader. Moses Thomas died in 1878. His son Walter, who had joined him on the church committee in 1861, served on it almost until his death in 1932, having been ordained as an Elder in about 1880. Mayfield Church is the earliest of the five Presbyterian Churches in the City of Whittlesea, predating Kalkallo (1860), Whittlesea (1863), Mill Park (1861) and Epping (1867). This bluestone weir is one of two in the same section of Darebin Creek and is a remanent from early farming days. A vineyard was established by Thomas Bear and produced award wining table wines in the 1860-70s. Orange trees were later grown on the slopes below Rockbeare Grove and mixed market gardening was established in this area as the land was progressively sub-divided and leased. The weirs were used to dam the creek and pumps used to pump water to the vineyards and orange grove.B&W photograph showing remains of bluestone weir across Darebin Creek -
