Beechworth Historic Courthouse
Tool - Truncheon
Law enforcement officers often carry truncheons as a tool for crowd control or self defence. Often carried by law enforcement officers, a truncheon was used as a compliance tool and defensive weapon, often used in crowd control or for self defence. Due to it's compact size a truncheon was hung on the belt of an officer to allow for quick and easy access when needed.Since it's establishment as a town in the 1800s, law and it's enforcement has played a crucial role in Beechworth's history and development.Small truncheon made of a golden coloured wood featuring a turned handle and a leather strap for attaching to the belt of a police officer. The leather strap is attached to the handle of the truncheon by a brass eyelet.truncheon, baton, law enforcement, beechworth historical court house, beechworth, police, robert simpson -

Police Stations (Anglesea)
Anglesea is a town on the Great Ocean Road in the Surf Coast Shire local government area. It is 110km from Melbourne. Before 1967 policing in Anglesea was on a seasonal basis with a 'shop front' police station and caravan in the main street. Anglesea Police Station (Barwon District) was opened on 7 February 1967 on the corner of Wray Street and The Great Ocean Road. It was a residential police station, brick veneer with an iron roof with 3 rooms, a bathroom, laundry and a garage. When the station opened it was staffed by one Senior Constable and two First Constables. List of staff from 1967-2002 is available from Victoria Police Museum10 photographs comprising: 8 black and white photos, 2 colour photospolice stations; anglesea police station -
Tarnagulla History Archive
Negative: Copy of Marchand image of Tarnagulla Courthouse, Court House, June 1866 (original image)
... policing ...Murray Comrie Collection. This photograph is a reasonable copy created from an older original. In June 1866, Aimé Marchand (1846-1910) made a series of fourteen photographs which were submitted to the 1866-67 Melbourne Intercolonial Exhibition, where they earned a 1st Class Honorable Mention. This is one of those fourteen images. Of French or Belgian origin and possibly formerly an assayer in California, Marchand appears to have begun his practice of photography in Tarnagulla around 1865 as an assistant to A.B. Clay. By the following year he had settled in Portland, where he opened the Royal Photographic Studio in Gawler Street. From his base in Portland he toured surrounding districts, offering portrait and view services. Little else is known about his life. He appears to have left Australia in 1878. A misprint of his name in a local directory as Annie Marchand created the misconception that he was one of only a few named women photographers in the colonies.A black and white negative image depicting the Court House in Tarnagulla. Aitkens Gap Police Lock up was originally constructed at The Gap which was south of the junction of Gap Road (Sunbury Road) and Calder Highway (Victoria St/Mt. Alexander Road). It was part of a police complex which was a changeover station for the gaol escort. The goal was relocated and rebuilt in the police station grounds in Sunbury in 1993.A coloured photograph of five men working on the removal of Aitkens Gap Gaol from its original site.
