Surrey Hills Historical Society Collection
Book, Lost relations : Fortunes of my family in Australia's Golden Age, 2015
Bought with funds generated by cemetery tours , presented to SHNCHC by SHHS following a presentation to the Society by the author. Graeme Davison has lived in Surrey Hills for many years. A family history by historian Graeme Davison - A widow and her 8 older children are uprooted from their Hampshire farm in 1850 and thrown together on an emigrate ship with 38 distressed needlewomen from London. How they came to be on the boat, and what happened on the high seas and afterwards in Australia , is a vivid tale of family ambitions and fears, successes and catastrophes. The Hewetts were not famous or distinguished, but their story reveals much about the foundations of Australia. Port of Echuca
Black and white photograph, approx 1980
Black and white photograph of 2 steamers moored by the river bank. The foreground steamer has 2 crew dressed in sailors uniform (band members?) There is a person standing on the lower roof section putting a case (?) into the upper floor with quite a few people up there also. There appears to be musical instruments behind the crowd. On the gangplank 2 men are wheeling a piece of equipment onto the steamer. The background steamer is the P. S. Canberra, also moored to the bank and unloading. There is a row boat in the middle of the river with 4 rowers and a standing cox. This appears to be a navel band getting ready for a cruise on the river, a social event that often happens in the Echuca area. On the other side of the river can be seen a "Caltex" sign and a couple of caravans parked between the trees. This could have been part of a river festival.Black and white photograph of 2 steamers moored by the river bank. The background steamer is the P. S. Canberra. black and white photograph, before 1924
This photograph shows the Lady Harriett, her barge, the Wyrallah and Storm Bird with Captain Jimmy Bills at Harbeck's wharf, Lakes Entrance, The Lady Harriett was a small steamer that serviced the Tambo River and other areas. In 1895 the Lady Harriett was advertised to run between Bairnsdale and Mallacoota on a weekly service. The Lady Harriett and barge did two or three trips up the Tambo per week. She did not carry passengers or run to a timetable and would carry maize and beans as well as fish from Mallacoota where by 1900 the fishing industry was well established' Lady Harriett towed her barge carrying an assortment of goods up the Tambo from 1895 to 1913. The S.S. Wyrallah was a regular Melbourne header for over twenty years. She was run down and sunk by the steamer Dilkera with the loss of six lives at Port Philip Head. (ref. The Argus Friday April 11 1924)This is a pictorial record of a once busy wharf. From Lakes Entrance ocean-going vessels had access to the Gippsland Lakes, the largest navigable inland waterway in Australia.A large black / white photograph of two large ships and two smaller ones at a wharf.
