Arthur LINDSAY (1912-1990) Born Melbourne Arthur Lindsay, a relative of the Lindsay family of Creswick, studied informally under Rupert Bunny, and John Munro in 1933, and held his first Exhibition in 1938, with Peter Cox, at Riddell Galleries. In 1939, he left Australia to tour Japan, but stayed on, accepting a position with a publishing company in Hong Kong. He served with the Hong Kong Medical Corp during World War Two and was interned at Pootung Camp, Shanghai, from 1941 – 45. He held an exhibition of his internment paintings in Melbourne in 1946. Lindsay returned to Hong Kong after the War, and supervised an Advertising Agency in Singapore, Kuala Lumpar, and Bangkok. In the 1950’s he travelled to Europe, United Kingdom, Spain and France. Returning to Australia Lindsay moved to Castlemaine in 1969. These brooches were made by Hans Beck, a German Templer who was born and lived in Palestine. When WWII broke out, he was sent to Australia on the "Queen Elizabeth" in 1941 and interned in Tatura Camp 3. His wife and children were left behind in Palestine. His daughter Ingrid said that although they were behind barbed wire, they were safe. Hans worked as a manufacturing jeweler in Sydney after his release from Internment. He sent for his family on 1947. A 1 x wooden triangular shape with a small four petal flower made of tiny white shells. A metal stick pin is attached to the back. B 1 x wooden heart shape. Two flowers on stems made from small pink shells. Each flower has five petals. A group of four tiny white shells sit between the flowers. A vase is carved into the bottom of the heart. A small safety pin in attached to the back. C 1 x wooden oval shape. Group of three pink shell flowers on green stems. Two flowers have six petals and a centre made from shells.
