Former Eltham Courthouse, 730 Main Road immediately prior to major restoration works undertaken by Nillumbik Shire Council. The Courthouse is the oldest public building in the shire. September Meeting (Newsletter No. 224, Sep. 2015) On 4th October 2014 Nillumbik Shire Council launched a publication titled ‘Nillumbik Tales - Voices of our Elders’, which is a collection of colourful and personal snapshots of our local community. The unique Nillumbik based stories have been written by a variety of authors, including some who are members of our Society. At our meeting on Wednesday 9th September 2015 we will be having some of our members reading their own ‘Nillumbik Tale.’ In collating and publishing this historically important collection Nillumbik Shire Council has documented many aspects of our area and of the people who contributed to our community. It is the railway bridge over the Campaspe River at Rochester, Vic. original to the construction of the line. It was taken late on a Saturday morning and shows the regular goods train of that period approaching, then crossing the bridge. I originally planned to take just one view. The approaching train was first then it was a rapid run back along the raised river bank to get the broadside shot. I had little time to steady myself or properly check camera settings, hence the slightly soft focus etc. The train would eventually continue over the Echuca Iron Bridge into NSW. THE ECHUCA COALING STAGE. Locomotives would stop alongside to receive coal dropped into their tenders from small overhead rail mounted tipping trays. Water could be obtained from either the elevated tank at one end or the connected standpipe at the opposite end. Locomotive firebox contents could be dumped into pits between the rails from locomotives once they were carefully positioned above them. Such locomotives then could move onto the Engine Shed area for overnight parking. Firebox fires would be re-lit when the locomotive was next needed in a day or so.
