The Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education was opened on 20 November 1976. The Council of the Institute included members of the Gippsland community who are prominent in local government, industry, commerce, education and the professions, the Director of the Institute, and representatives of the academic staff, students, and graduates. The institute assumed responsibility for the diploma courses previously offered by the Yallourn Technical College. Initially, all the Institute's teaching was conducted in the diploma building of the Yallourn Technical College. In 1972 the Institute transferred part of its operations to the first of its permanent buildings on a large campus in rural surrounds near the township of Churchill.These books are useful reference tools.Four thick volumes of "Gippsdoc A Bibliography of Gippsland". In 1858 a tramway was constructed to move goods between Warrnambool township and jetty on Lady Bay which was over a mile away The terminus was established on the southern side of Merri Street. and the track went around the edge of Lake Pertobe reserve. Large stores were also built near where the present railway station is situated to hold produce and carriages. These documents relate to contracts between Marion Gauley ,contractor of Warrnambool and the borough of Warrnambool for the operation of horse work with the tramway. John McDermid sadler,and William Stevens farmer of Russell's Creek are acting as surety for the contract.The tramway was an important part of Warrnambool's infrastructure and history and the documents also include names of local people. In 1893, a group of Orbost farmers formed together to initiate the Orbost Butter Factory. The first factory was built in Lochiel Street and was a wooden building. In 1916, a new building was constructed on Forest Road. This was a more substantial brick building which had its own power source. Electric power, mainly for lighting was supplied to the developing township of Orbost by the Butter Factory. This docket is an invoice for the supply of power to the household or business of C. Tomlinson in 1952. The Butter Factory power was the only power to Orbost prior to the 1962 when S E C power came to Orbost. Smoking Caps are caps worn by men while smoking to stop the hair from smelling of smoke. They also kept the head warm. They were popular in the period 1840-1880, usually worn by gentlemen in the privacy of their home. This beautiful velvet smoking cap was worn by James Stirling who was the first settler to occupy land in the Marlo township. James stirling arrived in Victoria from Scotland in 1842.He took over Corringle Station (Ewing's Marsh). His son James stirling later established theMarlo Hotel. (Read more in Mary Gilbert’s book)Smoking accessories like this cap were popular through the mid-to-late nineteenth century to prevent the smoker's hair from absorbing the smell of tobacco smoke and were often worn with smoking jackets. The design, with its elaborate embroidery shows an aspect of Victorian material culture and reflects the nineteenth-century love of 'Oriental' style. . April 30 1998, marked the transition from the New Zealand led Truce Monitoring Group (TMG), OP BEL ISI (I), to the Australian led Peace Monitoring Group (PMG) and the beginning of OP BEL ISI (II). The transition occurred following the signing of the Ceasefire Agreement in the Arawa township on Bougainville Island earlier that day. The PMG consisted of about 100 people from Australia, NZ, Fiji and Vanuatu. Nicholas Caire was born on Guernsey in the Channel Islands in 1837. He arrived in Adelaide with his parents in about 1860. In 1867, following photographic journeys in Gippsland, he opened a studio in Adelaide. From 1870 to 1876 he lived and worked in Talbot in Central Victoria. In 1876 he purchased T. F. Chuck's studios in the Royal Arcade Melbourne. In 1885, following the introduction of dry plate photography, he began a series of landscape series, which were commercially successful. As a photographer, he travelled extensively through Victoria, photographing places few of his contemporaries had previously seen. He died in 1918. This photograph shows the Orbost - Cunninghame coach leaving from outside Dickson's Hotel in Nicholson Street Orbost. Although noted as the Dickson Hotel, this may have been the Commonwealth Hotel which opened on New Year's Day 1902. Mr Jasper Drew held the first licence. Laura Dixon held the hotel licence from 04/04/10 until 05/02/17 and during that time it was known as Dickson's Hotel. A township, known as Cunninghame after a pioneer Gippsland squatter, was surveyed near Lake Bunga in 1866. The name changed to Lakes Entrance in 1915.This is a pictorial record of horse-drawn transport commonly used in Orbost, early 19th century. This book contains the Minutes and financial details from the Allans Forest Red Cross Hospital Auxiliary from 1925 to 1930. Allans Forest is a small locality on the Great Ocean Road about three kilometres from the township of Allansford on the eastern fringe of Warrnambool. The Hospital Auxiliary was formed as an extension of the Allansford group in 1925 to provide support for the Warrnambool and District Hospital. The group raised funds with dances and jumble sales and donated to the hospital such items as groceries (especially home made jams and soaps), hospital linen and baby wear. The hospital would provide tins of fat for the ladies to make the soap. This exercise book is of interest as a memento of the activities of a small group in a small settlement in the Warrnambool area nearly a hundred years ago. It shows the reliance in the past of a town hospital on local groups to provide basic items such as food and linen.This is an exercise book with a dark red cardboard cover and black binding on the spine. The pages have ruled black lines and handwritten entries in ink. In late 1883 the Melbourne based photographers Stevenson and McNicoll visited the Bacchus Marsh township and nearby districts. They are known to have been visiting the town in September 1883 and by November 1883 they were reported to have moved on to Myrniong and Ballan. During their visit they took numerous photographs. The images produced comprise scenes of shops and businesses in Bacchus Marsh, public buildings like the Court House and Bacchus Marsh Primary School, houses and their owners and several broader views of streets. The photos were then offered for sale. Photography businesses also sold albums for purchasers to display their photos.A unique and comprehensive set of images of people and places in the Bacchus Marsh town and district at a particular period in time, September-November 1883. This album of "carte de visites" photographs presents a rare compilation of the work of the Stevenson and McNicoll photography business. This team of photographers are known to have made several visits to towns and districts in the rural areas of Victoria and southern New South Wales in the 1880s and this album represents a very rare example of their non-portrait photography. The album is an example of the Victorian middle-class fashion to display family photographs for themselves and their visitors. These albums were often very expensive and in themselves evidence of the affluence of the family. They were made possible by the popularisation of photography as a social medium and were a forerunner of the coffee-table book. Medium sized leather-bound album, brown, front cover engraved with gold tooling in a starburst pattern. Pages are gold-lined. The inside front and end covers are in pale blue silk embossed with a gold floral pattern. The metal locking clasp is broken. The front page has a floral wreath of roses and forget-me-nots and a dragon-fly. The word "Album" is in the centre of the wreath, printed in gold in Gothic print. There are nine pages with pockets for four 65mm x 105mm sized "carte de visites" style photographs. Several feature pages have a single pocket for a larger photograph, or double pockets, possibly designed for family portraits. These portrait pages are also decorated with floral wreaths and insects, reflecting the theme of the frontispiece page. The smaller photos in the album were taken by the Melbourne photographers Stevenson and McNicoll, There are 48 of these smaller images. The images were created around September 1883 when photographers for Stevenson and McNicoll are known to have visited Bacchus Marsh and district. The images comprise scenes of shops and businesses in Bacchus Marsh, public buildings like the Court House and Bacchus Marsh Primary School, houses with their owners and several broader views of streets. References to various photos being created and being available for sale are mentioned in the Bacchus Marsh Express newspaper during September to November 1883. Each smaller photo has printed on the verso: Light & Truth. The development that had arguably the greatest impact in encouraging population growth in the shire during this period, was the establishment of a reliable water supply for the district. This had been a major concern of the local community for over 100 years, since the Melton township was first founded. Despite various schemes over the years to create a reliable water supply, the district was still dependent on bores, wells and tanks when the Melton Waterworks Trust was established in 1961 to address Melton’s water woes. This is an early map of the Borough of Warrnambool (1872/3) showing the central town area of Warrnambool and the surrounding district. Reserves, public buildings and some businesses are marked. The map was photolithographed by John Noone, a Melbourne artist and photographer who claimed in 1858 to have the oldest-existing photographic studio in Melbourne. Photolithography was a process first developed in Melbourne. For several years Noone was the official photographer for the Victorian Crown Lands Office and for the Victorian Public Library and Museum. The map has the stamp of the seller of the map – Charles Hider, the well-known stationer and bookseller in Timor Street, Warrnambool. The owner of the map, Henry George Marfell, (1883-1962) was the son of John and Mary Ann Marfell. The Marfells were well-known in Warrnambool as grain merchants and managers of the Warrnambool Co-Operative Milling Company. It is surmised from the writing on the Marfell label that this map was at some stage given by Henry Marfell to the old Warrnambool MuseumThis map of early Warrnambool is of considerable significance, firstly because its original state and early date (1873) make it of antiquarian and historical interest. Also the connection with the names, Charles Hider and Henry Marfell and the old Museum gives it added provenance and interest.This is a wax paper map mounted on cloth. At the top it is attached by nails to a piece of wood and at the top it has a cloth ring for hanging the map. The map is in black shadings on a yellow background. The map is badly creased and coming away from the cloth at the edges and at other various points. There is some red or pink marking or staining on the township area of the map (originally the sold lands on this map were coloured in brown and the reserves, buildings, etc in pink). On the left hand corner there is a piece of paper glued on with some handwriting in ink (Marfell). Europeans arrived in the Kiewa Valley in the 1830s and 40s. Following the drought of 1838-44 seeking out the rich pastures in the fertile Kiewa Valley. . The next major increase in population was as a result of the Kiewa Hydro Scheme. The beginning of construction of the Kiewa Hydro-electric scheme in the late 1940s introduced changes and led to the enlargement and improvement of local roads and the townships of Mount Beauty and Bogong Village were constructed by the SECV from the 1930’s to the 1950’s to house workers on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. At its peak the Kiewa Scheme employed around 4000 people from all walks of life and as many cultures.The influx of European migrants to work on the Hydro Scheme along with their rich cultural backgrounds, all played a major part in establishing the history of the area and in shaping the future character of the Mount Beauty, the Kiewa Valley and Falls Creek areas. Grampians House Changes Hands Grampians House in the centre of Hall's Gap township and one of the biggest guest houses in the area has been sold to Mr and Mrs Hudousek of St. Kilda Mr and Mrs Hudousck will take over Grampians House as from November 17, and Mr and Mrs D Matthews who have conducted it for the past ten years will come to Stawell to make their home here. Mrs Matthews has been actively associated with organisations at Hasll's Gap and is secretary of the current Wildbower (sic) Show.
