This work was first commissioned by the Melbourne city council as part of a celebration of the opening of the Birrarung Marr park. 25 victorian sculptors were given $2,500.00 to create a work which would be part of the park for about 6 months. Date of manufacture and installation: 2002 'Silent/Listen' was gifted by the artist, Petrus Spronk, to the people of Hepburn Springs in July 2001.Two smooth rectangular engraved granite slabs placed directly on the ground. Sandra Pullman visited the Melbourne City Council Exhibition, 'Melbourne Parks and Gardens Through the Magic Lantern' in November 2012. Lex Nieboer, former Burnley student graduating in 1975, found a large number of glass lantern slides in a store room and took them home as he was concerned they would be thrown out. His family has a long tradition of being involved in photography, so he understood the value of the slides. He donated the ones that were of Melbourne City Parks and Gardens to the Council and they used them in their exhibition. Sandra contacted Lex and arranged with Jane Wilson (Archivist) to visit Lex on 12 April, 2013 at Wilson Botanic Park, Berwick where he works. After Lex showed them the slides, he, very generously, donated approximately 300 slides back to the Burnley Archives. There was already a collection of almost 100 glass slides in the Archives. They were in a wooden box containing glass lantern slides with label on outside, "Slides of Horticultural Objects and Views." Inside lid is handwritten, "Mr Bailey Botanic Gardens Adelaide." (John Frederick Bailey, Director Adelaide Botanic Gardens 1917-1932.) and, "Mr Isaac 9 pla? 2 ficifolia." (Probably Mr Isaacs Mayor of Adelaide 1917.) Also, "Purchased from Estate of Reeves Late Malvern Gardens, AWJ." (F.L. Reeves, Malvern Council's Park Curator in the 1920's died in 1933. AWJ, A.W. Jessep, Principal Burnley Horticultural College 1926-1941.) These were numbers 61-85 "History of the Rose." Geoff Olive, former Staff member, remembered taking a number of glass slides to a photographic processor to have 35mm slides made from them. 60 of these are also in this collection. Invitation to the official opening of refuse destructor units and asphalt mixing plants at Inkerman Street, St Kilda, on 18 March 1953. The destructor units replaced a garbage incinerator that had been operating at the site for thirty years and had become obsolete. They were expected to serve St. Kilda's requirements for the next 80-100 years. In 1994, as a result of the local government amalgamation process combining the former Cities of Port Melbourne, South Melbourne and St Kilda, the new City of Port Phillip owned three municipal depots. The St Kilda municipal depot site became surplus to requirements and, in 1996, the City of Port Phillip resolved to use the site for a community housing project under the City of Port Phillip Housing Program. James Moore and Sons had a timber and saw mill at City Rd., South Melbourne. They employed over 600 men with a wide range of skills, turning out milled timber for building, household items and other cabinetry, the wooden bodies of trams and even what is believed to be the first commercially produced airplane propeller. The site also included a nail making factory. These goods were sold throughout the state before the company went into voluntary liquidation in 1935. James Louis Moore was born in Ireland 12/8/1843 and died in London 3/2/1913 before his body was returned to Melbourne for burial in the family vault in April 1913. The business continued under his sons Walter, Louis and Arthur.
