See Cat 4799 for dataEmbroidered postcard. It has a white cardboard embossed frame. The embroidered pattern is of green leaves, white and red flowers. At the bottom is embroidered "To my Sister". That is in a silvery white. The flower arrangement is an actual flap, lifting that flap is a small card. On that card is a seated British soldier in war torn trench talking to a little angel. The transcription is "Tell her that I love her".The letter side is written in faint pencil. It is headed - France 12 /1/17. Dear Sister ............... It finishes up with "Love to all, Joe". Coloured postcard of the view from Little Collins St looking north along Elizabeth St. Has a northbound cable tram and several horse-drawn wagons in the view. In the view are the GPO, Newing's Artists materials, Royal Arcade, and Turner's bicycles. The letter is dated 8/12 from an Eck in Toorak addressed to Doris Ettelson in Ballarat. The stamp used was introduced in 1913 by the Commonwealth Government as the first National stamp - see reference. Card published by C T Melbourne. Photograph - looking from Summerscales offices onto the intersection of Sturt and Lydiard St during an event, with a parked ESCo tram and crowds or onlookers on either side of the south side of Sturt St. Has a detailed image of the tram. C1909. In the background are Craigs Hotel, C. Marks & Co, National Mutual building, Snows, and the Town Hall. Several horse-drawn vehicles are in the photograph. Also, A. E. Casley Chemists and Beath Schiess & Co, though this seems to be almost printed into the photograph - above the chemist shop. The postcard has been sent to Miss N Sproston of Skeleton Cottage, Avoca. B&W print and scanned images of a coloured postcard lent to the BTM by Mr. Norm DePomeroy, Dec. 1997. Image is an ESCo tram just past the intersection of Doveton St. and Sturt St. travelling east along the north side of Sturt. Steet towing a heavily laden horse tram as a trailer. Photo appears to be taken soon after opening of the electric trams, as the tram does not have any destination box above the driver. Possibly summer 1905/1906. Numerous people in the street, some horse drawn vehicles in the photograph. Shows buildings along the south side of Sturt St. and part of the verandah of the building at the NE corner of Doveton St. 1 copy held at 8/98. Photo looks west from the Ballarat Fire Station (East) tower, and has a good view looking along Barkly St. Shows the crossing loop between Eastwood and Main St with one tram in the view. Wal has dated the photo as 1914 in his album notes. On rear Wal Jack has written "Looking up Barkly St towards Mt Pleasant. Photo taken from Ballarat Fire Station about 1914-1916 period. Old type tram from Mt Pleasant about to turn into Main St. Note old passing loop behind tram. Loop removed to top of rise in centre background. This document one of several papers and objects from the estate of Mr Arthur O. Dixon, an ex-master mariner and later smallhold farmer. Other correspondence and papers gifted to the Mission indicates the year 1919 (post his service in World War 1) was a time of some changes for Mr Dixon, possibly leading to his subsequent re-location to Australia show that he served as a crew member on the Merchant vessel "Hororata" a vessel which is noted in the MTSV records including an image of the crew in the early 1920s. (see VC record ).This vessel is also mentioned in a narrative poem by a de-mobbed Soldier of WW1 as the transport for a number of returning servicemen and families. The poem is held in the National Library of Australia.Unusually for the early 20th C. era of Mr Dixon's service at sea two images of Mr Dixon were included in the gift of papers. Personal objects included an unusual small travel size New Testament (see VC record ) heavily annotated provide further insights into the experience of early 20th C. seafarers. Officially printed document, and official copy of an original certificate of competency issued by the office of the Register General of Shipping and Seamen recognising Arthur Oswald Dixon as an Extra Master. At right angles to the certificate is a small margin at left indication the current document is an approved copy in 1919 of the original certificate issued in 1904.
