Skis Snow Competition, circa 1966
The post World War II migration of European "snow skiiers" into Australia combined with the construction of Hydo Electricity Schemes in both the N.S.W.and Victorian Alps regions, opened up these winter snow areas to a greater influx of tourists and holiday adventurers interested in "winter" sports. The ability to project, on a global scale, skiing facilities of international standards to those in the northern hemisphere during their summer has opened up the Australia ski resorts and their facilities to a much greater winter sport orientated population. These cross country skis were purchased by a member of the Bogong Ski Club and were part of a bulk ski stock consignment from Finland in 1966/67. They were introduced into the Victorian Alps to encourage skiers to take up cross country skiing both at Falls Creek and Mount Buller. This initiative spurred on the now annual 42 kilometre cross country "Kangaroo Hoppet" race at Falls Creek. This race is currently the biggest cross country snow skiing race in Australia. These snow skis were made in Finland. They are wooden (hickory) skis and made from four strips (glued and shaped) pieces of wood that are not laminated. There is a painted blue flash on the top of the skis that extends the full length of the skis. The face of the underside of the skis is flat and is coated in black Stockholm tar. Glider or grip wax was applied onto this base. The top body of the skis is tapered from shoe position to both front and back tips.Tapered curvatures from foot radiating to all sides provides the required aerodynamics. Metal boot bindings consisting of a toe plate with adjustable toe clip and a heel plate, both of which are screwed onto the skis. "KILPA, KARHU URHEILUTARPEITA SPORTART1KLAR, Karhu-Valtz Finland. Papers - History of the Shire of Bright taking over Mt Beauty from the State Electricity Commission of Victoria
Mt Beauty township was built as a construction town by the SECV for their workers on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. In Oct. 1957 the Bright Shire agreed to take over the running of the town At the time it was thought that the section of 'North Mt Beauty ' would disappear. By 1961 and again in 1975, the Shire was still struggling with money for administration and maintenance of the town, including the 'sub-standard' homes in North Mt Beauty. The papers state the agreements made over the years from 1957 to 1975 in order to come to a new agreement.Correspondence between the SEC and the Bright Shire in 1975 confirms that the Shire was struggling to maintain the high standard with increased costs, set by the SEC during construction. "Mt Beauty provides less income to the Shire and offers a poor medium for the reception of grants and CRB assistance'. The papers state the agreements made over the years from 1957 to 1975 with negotiations for a new agreement. This still seems to be a problem in 2021 - a second rate town compared to Bright which makes more money and gets more facilities.A variety of foolscap size papers bound by a rusty fastener. Table, Cheddar cheese table
Believed to have come from Tooram where it was used for cheese making. Tooram commenced cheese manufacture in the mid 19th century in a purpose-built bluestone factory beside the homestead. It was initially set up by Pierce and a long article in the Warrnambool Standard describes the factory and its processes. Cheese production continued through changes of ownership until the 1930s when the Uebergangs ceased making cheese on site. The table was auctioned at Panmure and purchased by 'Flapper' Clarke of Panmure who donated it to the museum in 2012.Rectangular wooden table with trough top, two rounded handles at either end and four legs with stays at either end; has been lime washed on the outside.rural industry, agriculture, food technology, dairying, food processing, allansford, tooram, panmure, cheese making, clarke -

Headwear - Slouch Hat, September 2005
On 22 December 1890, the military commanders of the then separate Australian Colonies prior to the Federation of Australia met to discuss the introduction of the khaki uniform throughout Australia. They agreed that all Australian Forces with the exception of the Artillery would wear the slouch hat. It was to be looped up on one side—Victoria and Tasmania on the right and the other colonies (later states) on the left. This was done so that rifles could be held at the slope without damaging the brim. After Federation, the slouch hat became standard Australian Army headgear in 1903Today it is worn by military personnel from a number of countries, although it is primarily associated with Australia, where it is considered to be a national symbol.Slouch Hat - this broad brim hat is made of fur felt with an 8 fold hat band (puggaree) around the outside of the crown and attached to the inside of the crown is a brown leather chin strap. Helibox, Cardboard food delivery box, Early 1960s
The successful dropping of supplies to remote fire crews involved a great deal of experimentation. The result was a large heavy-duty cardboard container being developed in 1964 by Athol Hodgson from the FCV Fire Research Branch which employed fold-out wings and was called the “helibox”. It was suitable for supplies weighing less than 9 kg and best dropped from about 300 feet and became a standard technique. It was adopted Australia wide, but the wider availability of helicopters made the helibox eventually redundant. Unique to Victoria but adopted across Australia.Large cardboard box with "wings" to cause it to rotate when dropped from the air. Book, Convict Days, 1960
This book contains selections of the convict stories written by Price Warung, 1864-1911(real name William Astley). He was a journalist and writer who worked for a great number of newspapers throughout Australia and began an important association with the Sydney ‘Bulletin’ in 1890. In this period he write the powerful works for which he is best known, ‘Convict Days’, a series of four volumes of stories about Australia’s convict system. The major theme of these writings is the sordid nature of the convict system. Astley became heavily involved in the Federation campaign, firstly as the Secretary of the Bathurst Federal League and then as the organizing Secretary of the 1896 Bathurst Convention. This Convention is considered by historians to have given the Federation campaign a new and vigorous vitality. In 1898 Astley wrote most of the official articles publishing the ‘Yes’ case for the Federation referendum. In 1883 Astley was in Warrnambool, working as a journalist for the Warrnambool Standard newspaper and examples of his journalism can be found in the papers of this time. He wrote lengthy reports in a free-flowing and attractive but verbose style. His two articles on the well-known horse stud and hop farm called ‘Bryan O’Lynn’ appeared in the Standard in October 1884. This book is of considerable interest as it was written by Price Warung (William Astley). Not only is he of importance in Australia’ history but also he has his place in Warrnambool’s history as a journalist for the Warrnambool Standard in the 1880s. This is a hard cover book of 206 pages. The cover is grey with pink lettering on the spine. The dust cover is white with a black, white and red sketch of a convict on the front and a black and white photograph of the author and his biography on the back cover. The book contains an Introduction and thirteen stories by Price Warung. The dust cover is a little stained and torn. price warung (william astley), warrnambool standard, history of warrnambool -

These handmade skittles in this set appear to have had a lot of use as the surfaces of the skittles are well worn. The skittles have a hole in the top, indicating that they were made on a wood lathe. The game of skittles is played indoors and outdoors. It is a traditional target game or sport and the forerunner of the sport of bowling. A standard skittle set has nine skittles and one or two balls. The skittles would be arranged in a diagonal square pattern and a ball would be bowled towards them, for a given distance away. The object is to knock down as many skittles as possible. Helmet, Steel M1917
An example of the World War 1 standard USA Army battle helmet issued to infantry troops. This version was known as the M1917 Helmet and is based on the British Brodie helmet with minor modifications. This steel helmet is painted matte khaki, with sawdust added to the exterior finish to provide a non-reflective surface. The brim, which is fitted with an outer steel rim, varies in width from 32 mm at the front to 35 mm at the sides and rear. The helmet inner liner is incomplete. A buff coloured webbing chinstrap, which is attached to the liner frame on each side has an adjustable sliding clip.nilww1, brodie helmet, usa -
