Herbert A Leighton was an actor and Elocution teacher, known widely in the Eastern states of Australia where he performed with his wife Tracy Hamilton. However all was not as it seemed. In 1903 he was arrested in Perth after suspicions were raised when he purchased expensive jewellery and clothes for his wife. Subsequently six thousand pounds in banknotes was found under his bed. Another fellow from his theatre group was also arrested and charged with bank robbery. Leighton was charged with receiving money knowing it was stolen. Investigations by the Perth police showed that Leighton was really Norman Campbell who had been born in Gippsland. He had worked as a clerk in the Victorian Savings Bank in Melbourne and then in the same role in the Sydney Savings Bank. During this time he had amassed large sums of money by forgery, a crime he spent seven years in prison for. He then emerged as the newly minted H. A. Leighton, actor and elocution teacher in Bendigo.Large format scrapbook collated by H.A. Leighton. Clothing. Women's black embossed silk skirt. Part of two piece set(bodice 11410.1). A shaped skirt with 2.5 cm cotton fabric waistband with three hanging loops attached. Centre back opening (20cm) fastened at waist with two metal hooks and eyes. Two metal eyes on waistband for attaching to the bodice. The front of the skirt has two vertical sections of appliquéd decorative beading (38 cm X 5 cm). The hem of the skirt is edged with black satin binding. The skirt is fully lined with brown cotton fabric. At centre back below the opening is an internal pocket (40 cm X 8 cm) of lining fabric. Gives the details of his viewpoints and the action of the Disciplinary Panel. Dated 1-8-1979. The Union Industrial Officer Gordon Bell recommended that he resign. See note in the pdf file from donor - "Item 3 John Harrington - he printed 2000 of these pamphlets and distributed them on Kew Depot trams and Preston Depot trams. He split the union down the middle and resulted in Gordon Bell resigning and Jim Harper becoming Industrial Officer. In an e-mail from Mal Rowe dated 2/9/2019, he advises "If it is Essendon (and that looks right) especially noting that 454 (in the background) was allocated to Essendon at that time, so Essendon is pretty certain. The tram is most likely 927 - the only dash canopy SW6 with a number including 2 allocated to Essendon in the period. Geoff Warburton's tables say the three holes were cut in 927's dash in Nov 1951 and the it was converted to headlights in December 1951! As you say, looks like MMTB staff - in the pit in their suits! Agfa Colour slide, cardboard mount, by Keith Caldwell dated 12 March 1960, of W5 818 running in Mount Alexander Road, North Essendon, crossing the street access for Marco Polo Street. The tram showing route 59, Essendon Aerodrome, has trolley wheels and has a second person in the cab, possibly a trainer. Unusually the tram number is placed above the headlight, In the background are the palm trees in the centre median plantation.
