Gold was discovered in Victoria c1850 and people came from all over the world to seek their fortune at Ballarat and Bendigo and surrounding gold fields. This large wooden rocking- box or cradle was used by gold prospectors. A handle on the rocker is pushed back and forth, as the miner put gravel into the top part and finer and heavier particles dropped through a screen, helped along by buckets of water. The bottom part of the device had slats, that caught the heavier metals. After many shovel loads of gravel were pushed through the rocker, the miner would then use his gold pan to sort out the heavy minerals to find gold. Most of the pioneer settlers in Moorabbin Shire left the area to try their luck at gold mining and there was a desperate shortage of workers to maintain the market gardens and supply food to the ever increasing population of Melbourne.This gold prospector's 'cradle' is hand made and typical of those used by many hopeful Moorabbin Shire pioneers as they abandoned their market gardens to try their luck at finding gold in the Ballarat and Bendigo minefields c1850This gold miner's rocker is very old, and very well-used. Rev Ira Menear (1901 - 1977). Born at Kapunda. Worked at the Kimba and Pt Neill mission stations on the west coast of South Australia before studying at the Brighton Training College and Adelaide University. Graduated B.A. Adelaide University 1928. After completing his theological training he was appointed to the Norwood Circuit before being appointed to take charge of the Methodist Inland Mission at Cloncurry. Minister at Crow's Nest, Gympie & Rockhampton 1936 - 1940. In 1940 he was accepted as a pilot officer in the RAAF, having been given leave of absence by the Methodist Conference. Menear enlisted RAAF air crew but was later transferred to the administrative staff. He rose from A.C.1 to the rank of Acting Wing Commander. He served in many parts of Australia, including the Darwin area. After the war Rev Menear took charge of the Commonwealth Rehabilitation Centre at Mount Osmond and later Mount Breckan, Victoria Harbour Rehabilitation Centre. The photo shows part of the process of moving a yacht, named 'Sonia' from 213 Union Road, the home of the Fleming family. It was built in the shed garage of the house and moved from it by horse and dray. The home belonged to Harold Arthur Fleming (1891-1971) and his wife, Georgiana Phyllis (nee Griffiths: 1895-1936). Harold built the boat. They had 3 children - Eric Alexander (1918-1920), Sybil Patricia (1921-2012) and another girl. The shed /garage had been the old coach house of the adjoining property, 215 Union Road. the boat was launched at the Brighton Yacht Club. Harold was a draughtsman. The Flemings lived in a number of houses in Surrey Hills: 1. 1919 - 'Radnor' in Croydon Road; the name possibly derives from Radnorshire, Wales where Georgiana was born. 2. 1921 - 169 Union Road 3. 1931 - 213 Union Road. The donor (deceased) was the daughter of the builder and married Keith Andrew Fleming. A black & white photo with 3 draught horses in the foreground. An address delivered by Legatee Brian Armstrong (according to handwritten note on Envelope L.6) at the graveside of Sir John Monash in Brighton Cemetery on 24th October 1937, six years after Monash' death. In it he mentions how he, Armstrong, was one of "the great Company of junior officers and men who carried his orders into effect." and quotes from the message sent by Monash to all the men of the Australian Army Corps before a battle on 8 August 1918 when "for the first time on the western front we fought as an Australian army, with the green grass beneath our feet and a retreating enemy in sight." Legatee John Henry Brian Armstrong was President of Melbourne Legacy in 1937, and rose from Private to Lieutenant in the AAMC 22nd Btn. He was wounded at Dernancourt 25.4.1918 and Herleville, becoming a P.O.W. 18.8.1918. He was discharged as medically unfit 2.8.1919 and became a solicitor, serving as a Legatee for 54 years. A photo of Mr William Bernard Wigston who left a substantial amount to Melbourne Legacy in his will in 1968. The note from Legatee Aaron Beattie says William Wigston was born in London in 1880 and died in Melbourne in 1968. He was educated at Lancing College in Southern England (near Brighton). His father was a London solicitor. The photo was taken about 35 years before being given to Legacy which may have been approx 1933. The article from The Age says that Mr William Wigston was a financier living in Toorak and had died aged 88. He left in his will, approximately $150,000 to Junior Legacy and the same to the RSPCA. The executive officer of Legacy, Mr Ivan Layton, believed it was the highest donation that they had ever received at that time. The photo was produced by Talma, which was a photography business in Melbourne. The article was part of collection of items about bequests made to Legacy put together by a former archive committee. An article in the Box Hill 'Reporter' (11 October 1907, p.2) refers to the presentation of the artefact to the Kew Town Hall. The report records: 'Presentation to Kew's Ex-Mayor In the mayor's room at Kew on Tuesday evening, Ex-Mayor Cr Wishart was made the recipient of a handsomely-illuminated and exquisitely-framed testimonial as a mark of appreciation by his colleagues of the highly satisfactory manner in which he had discharged the duties appertaining to the mayoral office. .... A framed group of the metropolitan mayors was subsequently presented by Cr Wishart as an addition to the pictures hung in the mayor's room.'The newspaper report in the Box Hill Reporter positively identifies the artefact and how it was placed in the Mayor's Room in the Walpole Street Town Hall. Eliza Box was born in Withyham, Sussex England 1850 and came to Australia with her parents George and Mary Cripps - Box and siblings. George Box 1808-1867 of Sussex England, married Mary Cripps in 1831 -1856 and with 3 three of their 4 four sons and 3 three of their 4 four daughters left Liverpool in the Sailing Ship 'Atlanta' in March 1856 to begin a new life in Melbourne, Victoria , Australia. Their baby daughter Cecilia Lydia died a few days later. Caroline Box, the eldest daughter, remained in England working as a cook until she joined the family in Australia in 1863. William Box 1834-1902, the eldest son of George Box, married Elizabeth Avis 1833- 1914 and they resided in Box Cottage 1865 -1914 where they established a market garden and raised 13 children. William and Elizabeth had emigrated in 1854 so George worked on their market garden before setting up in Patterson Road. Sadly Mary drowned in a water hole only 4 months after their arrival in Brighton. It is supposed that Elizabeth helped George raise the children while he established his market garden. George died from Tetanus following an infected broken leg caused by falling from his dray in 1867. Eliza Box married Jabez Gurr in 1876 a Wheelwright and had 1 son Tasman who died 1889 aged 5 years. Jabez Gurr born 1831 Essex England came to Tasmania, Australia with his parents Henry b 1797 and Mary Ann Taylor-Gurr b 1819 and 6 siblings on the SS ”Charles Kerr” 1835. Jabez married Priscilla Thompson in 1854 in Tasmania. Eliza and Jabez were devout Christians and set up a night school teaching English to the Chinese market gardeners of Bentleigh.. After Tasman died they sold their house and went to China as missionaries where Eliza’s niece, Rebecca ‘Faith’ Box Viloudaki was also a missionary. On their return from China they lived in Prahran.. They are buried in Brighton Cemetery with their son Tasman. Box Cottage Museum, a reconstruction of an early settler hut, is named after the Box family who resided there 1865 -1913 . William Box who, with his wife Elizabeth Avis Box and 13 children, lived and farmed on the block of land in Jasper Road, East Brighton ( now McKinnon / Ormond) that was part of the Henry Dendy Special Survey 1841. George Box 1808-1867 migrated in 1856 and worked with his son William Box until he established a market garden in Patterson Rd . East Brighton ( now Bentleigh). NSW Mounted Rifles officer's mess dress waistcoat worn by Lieutenant William Augustine Newman (1873-1955) during the Second Boer War. Born in Campbelltown, NSW, William began working in the colonial public service at the age of eighteen. In 1899 he travelled to South Africa to fight in the Second Boer War as an officer of the 1st NSW Mounted Rifles. Returning to Australia in time for Federation on 1 January 1901, William rejoined the public service and was appointed to the original staff of Prime Minister Sir Edmund Barton, attending the first opening of Federal Parliament in Melbourne as Barton's private secretary. He went on to serve as the chief clerk of the Home Affairs Department, Commonwealth Electoral Officer for Victoria and official secretary to the Governor-General. In 1927 he was appointed Administrator of Nauru, a position he occupied until his retirement at the end of 1932. He retired to Brighton, where he lived with his family at 43 Martin Street until his death in 1955.Black NSW Mounted Rifles officer's mess dress waistcoat. This table runner was made by Corporal Herbert Burdekin during the First World War around 1916 while he was recovering from a bullet wound. Herbert joined the 8th (Reserve) Battalion of the West Yorkshire Regiment (Leeds Rifles) in November 1914 and was deployed to France in April 1915. In July 1916 he received a gunshot wound to the arm and was sent home to England to recover, during which time he crocheted this table runner. He returned to France in early 1917 and was wounded a second time by a gas shell on 23 July 1917. Herbert likely never fully recovered from his exposure to gas during the war. He received a medical discharge in November 1918 due to "debility caused by war service" and died only a few years later in 1922, aged 26. His widow Mary and young daughter Hilda moved to Australia and settled in Brighton, with Mary living at 4 Collins Street until her death in 1966.Hand crocheted table runner featuring an interlocking diamond pattern in cream, pale purple and pale yellow. This item is part of the Di Reidie collection. Diane Reidie was a much loved volunteer and President of Brighton Historical Society from 1999 until 2016. Originally from New Zealand, Di and her family lived in Male Street, Brighton for many years. A vibrant and energetic person with a zest for life and a gift for bringing people together, Di was a friend to many in the Bayside community and active in local community organisations. Her tireless work as President of BHS saw her named Bayside Citizen of the Year in 2008. As a seller and collector of vintage clothing, she was passionate about fashion history; one of her many enduring contributions to BHS was her extensive work in preserving, developing and promoting the Society's costume collection. In 2018-19, Di donated more than one hundred items from her personal vintage clothing collection to the Society. The collection, which includes clothing, hats, handbags and shoes from local and international designers, is representative of Di's wide-ranging interests, colourful personality, creativity, humour and love of fashion and travel. Di purchased these 1890s shoes around 1990 and recalled wearing them to approximately three events before she donated them to BHS in 2019. Di enjoyed the novelty and conversation they would inspire due to their unusual appearance by modern standards. The shoes are indicative of Di's playful approach to clothing and life. The decorative preserved mink pelt with head featured on the vamps of these shoes is typical of Victorian era interest in and prevalent use of preserved animals for decorative purposes in clothing, millinery and household adornment. This fashion reflected social positioning of oneself as being affluent, educated and worldly. Following the death of Queen Victoria's husband Prince Albert in 1861, the Queen's approach to mourning his death influenced social conventions for the public, with the wearing of black becoming a significant aspect of Victorian fashions. The shoes were made by Kendal Milne & Co, a large department store on Deansgate, Manchester. It has traded under various names and owners since it opened in 1832; it traded as Kendal Milne & Co from 1862-1919, and continued to be known by this name for many years after. The store is currently owned by the House of Fraser department store chain and is known as House of Fraser Manchester.Black silk linear quilted uppers of single piece construction with feature centre front vamp seam. Horsehair wadding can be seen along the side of the forefoot where the upper is coming away from the leather soles. Approx 4.5 cm plain black silk covered heel with leather top piece missing from right shoe. Both shoes feature the head of a small preserved mink with glass eyes. The toppling of the vamp features a decorative strip of mink fur. The Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works (MMBW) plans were produced from the 1890s to the 1950s. They were crucial to the design and development of Melbourne's sewerage and drainage system. This plan forms part of a large group of MMBW plans and maps that was donated to the Society by the Mr Poulter, City Engineer of the City of Kew in 1989. Within this collection, thirty-five hand-coloured plans, backed with linen, are of statewide significance as they include annotations that provide details of construction materials used in buildings in the first decade of the 20th century as well as additional information about land ownership and usage. The copies in the Public Record Office Victoria and the State Library of Victoria are monochrome versions which do not denote building materials so that the maps in this collection are invaluable and unique tools for researchers and heritage consultants. A number of the plans are not held in the collection of the State Library of Victoria so they have the additional attribute of rarity.Digital copy of an original MMBW plan. This contour plan shows the area identified by the MMBW for purposes of drainage and sewerage in 1894. The suburbs represented extend from Williamstown in the west to Bulleen in the east, and from Preston in the north, south to Sandringham. Suburbs are outlined in coloured ink. Red lines indicate main and branch sewers in existence at the beginning of 1894 in central and inner Melbourne. These extended as far as Williamstown and Brighton, but not yet as far as Kew, where sewering did not commence until 1901. Contour lines show the topography, which was important for indicating the fall of the land for the laying of sewers and drainage channels. Kew appears to be fairly undeveloped at this date except for railway lines and stations (the Kew and Outer Circle lines), main roads, the Kew Lunatic Asylum Reserve and Studley Park. However, the contour plan does not accurately represent the density of settlement, nor the large number of houses, which were being built in Kew and other suburbs from the 1850s to the land boom of the late 1880’s and early 1890’s. Alonzo Box, of Oakleigh ,a nephew of William and Elizabeth Box who resided in 'Box Cottage' 1865 - 1914, married Mary Closter (Kloster), of Oakleigh, on June 12th 1918. Alozo's elder sister, Rebecca, sent a bolt of Chinese hand-embroidered silk from which this wedding dress was made. Rebecca Viloudakia, nee Box, was a missionary in China, and married to a Greek Silk Merchant. Alonzo Box, the 9th child of John and Martha Sheldrake Box , enlisted in the Army and landed at Gallipoli 25/4/1918. He was evacuated to Egypt and then sent to the battlefields of France and Flanders before returning home to Melbourne in February 1918. Rebecca Box, the eldest child of John and Martha Sheldrake Box, was in the first party of Methodist Missionaries to leave Australia for the China Inland Mission in 1890. During the Boxer Uprising 1900-1901 her Mission outpost was attacked but she escaped and was taken to Shanghai. She later married one of the rescue party Nicholas Viloudakia a Greek silk merchant .Australian Dress Register ID 573 12/5/2015 Following Henry Dendy's Special Survey 1841 pioneer settlers bought allotments of land in the area of Moorabbin Parish. Alonzo Box was the nephew of William and Elizabeth Box who bought the cottage on the 30acre allotment from an unknown pioneer settler in 1868 and resided there until Elizabeth's death in 1914. Alonzo Box served in the Army World War 1 1914- 1918 at Gallipoli, France and Flanders. Rebecca Box -Viloudakia was in the first party of Methodist Missionaries to leave Australia for the China Inland Mission in 1890 and was rescued during the Boxer Rebellion 1900-1901 and taken to Shanghai by her future husband.A cream two piece wedding dress made from a bolt of hand embroidered Chinese silk for the marriage of Mary Closter and Alonzo Box on June 12th, 1918. The bolt of Chinese silk was sent by Alonzo’s older sister, Mrs Rebecca Viloudakia, a missionary in China, who was married to a Greek silk merchant. The machine sewn dress was made by a dressmaker in Dandenong, Victoria. The jacket is blouson, with a front opening and is gathered at the waist by a band enclosing a drawstring. The collar is a sailor style that forms a slight / high V-shape front neckline. Four vertical roses are separated by three bands of lacework. The back of the jacket is plain silk. The right front of the jacket has a panel of embroidered roses, band of lacework and a facing fold that encloses 4 fastening presses. There are crocheted bobbles on the front representing buttons. The left jacket front also has the panel of embroidered roses, lacework and matching fold for the 4 fastening studs. The full length inset sleeves are gathered to a cuff that fastens with silk covered buttons. The sleeves have floral embroidery down the outside centre line. The left sleeve has an extra detachable cuff with embroidery on the flounce that matches the bottom panel of the skirt. It is held in position around the wrist by 4 white metal press studs. The skirt sits above the ankle. It consists of 5 panels slightly gathered at the back waistline with a left side placket 21cm with hooks and eyes and press studs. The waistband is lined with petersham and has 6 whalebone inserts. The front of the skirt has small pleats to fit the 3 decorated panels to the waistline. The front has 3 bands of lacework around the lower part. 3 panels form the centre front each embroidered with a different floral pattern. The back of the skirt is plain with 3 bands of lacework rising from the hem, which is sewn with spoke work stitch. The long waist sash/belt is plain silk with embroidered ends and 3 silk balls with crocheted caps suspended on 3 crocheted silk chains. It has a rose knot with 2 metal press stud fasteners.
