Laurence SCOTT PENDLEBURY (1914 - 1986) Born Melbourne Laurence Scott Pendlebury studied at the National Gallery of Victoria School between 1932 and 1938 and then at Swinburne Technical College. He served during World War Two with the AIF between 1941 and 1945. Teaching at Swinburne Technical College between 1946 and 1963 Laurence Scott Pendlebury was head of the art school from 1963 until his retirement in 1974. He was president of the Victorian Artists’ Society from 1961 to 1963. Awards include: Dunlop Prize in 1950, 1951, 1953 and 1954; Gibson Prize, Victorian Artists’ Society in 1956; Wynne Prize in 1956, 1957, 1960 (shared with John Perceval) and 1968; Caltex Prize in 1957; Victorian Artists’ Society Artist of the Year (shared) in 1975. Nornie Gude was the daughter of Walter Gude, a leding musician, and highly regarded teacher. She grew up in Ballarat and was educated at Loreto College. From 1931 to 1936 Nornie Gude attended the Ballarat Technical Art School, a division of the Ballarat School of Mines. She was accepted into the School at the age of 15 because she was so advanced in painting. Nornie Gude studied at Ballarat for five years before progressing to Melbourne’s National Gallery of Victoria School. As a violinist Nornie Gude played for more than a decade with the Zelman Orchestra. The financial account book was used by the Warrnambool Harbour Board for its Emergency Account. It records transactions made with The Warrnambool branch of the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney Limited during the year 1931. The Secretary of the Warrnambool Harbour Board would have used this book in 1931. James Menzies, Pilot arid Harbour Master from 1929, was appointed as Acting Secretary for the Board in 1932 and held this office until the Board ceased in 1936. Warrnambool’s CBC Manager during this time was L E Whitney; he was Manager from 1924 to 1939. The Commercial Banking Company of Sydney Limited opened in 1893. On January 1, 1927 the CBC amalgamated with the Bank of Victoria. In 1981 the CBC merged with the National Bank of Australasia Limited and on January 1, 1983 the bank started using the abbreviated name of the National Australia Bank (NAB). Warrnambool Harbour Board- The Warrnambool Harbour Board was constituted by Order of Council on May 29, 1928, under the Harbour Board’s Act of 1927, taking over from the Ports and Harbours Branch of the Public Works Department of Victoria. The Board was then the only body with power to manage and control the whole Port, including shipping, facilities upkeep and improvements of the port. The work it carried out involved dredging, building of port facilities and drafting of port regulations, and collecting taxes, tolls, rates and charges. The Board was officially dissolved on June 30, 1936, at which time the Public Works Department again had control. The Warrnambool Harbour Board had rented out the Lighthouse Keeper’s Quarters from the 1920s until 1936, when the Board closed down. However, rentals continued with other currently unknown landlords until Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village opened in 1975 and began renovating the Cottage, in stages. This is a programme for a 1913 Clara Butt and Kennerley Rumford concert in the Warrnambool Town Hall. Clara Butt (1872-1936) was an English contralto recitalist and concert performer, well-known for her powerful and deep voice. Her three months’ tuition in Paris was sponsored by Queen Victoria. She was married to Kennerley Rumford in 1900 and they had three children. Robert Henry Kennerley Rumford (1870-1957) was an English baritone singer known initially for his performance of oratorio. Clara Butt and Kennerley Rumford were called ‘the greatest classical Valentines’. Other performers listed in this concert programme were Mowat Carter, a Melbourne-born violinist and William Murdoch, a pianist, composer and author, born in Bendigo.This programme is of considerable significance as it records the visit to Warrnambool of the famous English singer, Clara Butt. It is an original programme and it is probably a rare one. This is an eight-page programme, consisting of two sheets of cream paper folded in half. The programme was stapled but the staples have been removed. The front cover has blue printing and the back cover has an advertisement in blue print. The print on the inside pages is in black. HMAS Perth (D29), a modified Leander-class light cruiser. Commissioned into the Royal Navy as HMS Amphion in 1936, she was sold to the RAN three years later. The ship served until 1 March 1942, when she was sunk during the Battle of Sunda Strait. HMAS Perth (D 38), the lead ship of the Perth-class guided missile destroyers. Built as a Charles F. Adams-class destroyer derivative for the RAN and commissioned in 1965, the ship served until decommissioning in 1999. She was sunk as a dive wreck off the coast of Albany, Western Australia, in 2001. The book was used as a visitors book for the early Mission to Seafarers. The first date in the book is the 13th of December, 1907, although there are almost six pages of signatures before this. The last signature is dated the 28th of June, 1951. The book documents some of the most significant moments of the Central Institute: - the Opening Ceremony of the "new" Mission to Seafarers building in September 1917. - the signature of HRH Edward, then Prince of Wales, and a newspaper clipping, detailing his visit, during has Australian tour in 1920. - the visit by the Governors General including HRH the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester in 1945. Also registered: the Australian Chaplains conference attendees of both 1936 and 1949. Many supporters, ladies from the Guild and seafarers signed the book.The book is a significant record of VIP visitors to the Mission to Seafarers 1907 to 1951. It records respective Opening Ceremonies for Mission Buildings of both 1907 and 1917 and attendees. The book also documents a visit from Edward, Prince of Wales in 1920, travelling on the H.M.S "Renown". Ten Pretty Girls was composed by Jimmy Kennedy and Will Grosz wrote the lyrics. The song was written in the 1930's. Broadcasting from Sydney from 1936, Jim Davidson’s ABC Dance Band, with the trumpeter Jim Gussey, the vocalist Alice Smith and the trombonist and arranger George Trevare, became the most popular in the country. It presented dance programs on Friday and Saturday evenings and played for other ABC shows including `Out of the Bag’ and `A.B.C. Parade’. In 1937-39 the band made three interstate tours, with a variety of artists including Bob Dyer, Tex Morton and Gladys Moncrieff. Davidson was a strict but encouraging leader who inspired great loyalty in his players. This dress belonged to Mary Grace Medbury (nee Matthews, 1885-1967). Mary was born in Kansas, USA, and as a teenager travelled to Devon, England, before she came to Australia with her family and married Walter Ambrose Medbury (1887-1947). They lived together in Cheel Street, East Oakleigh. Walter, a building contractor, worked on numerous construction projects in the Melbourne area, including the Oakleigh Methodist Church, the HMAS Cerberus naval base and - closer to home - the former Brighton Courthouse, which was built in 1936 and still stands at 15 Boxshall Street. Mary gave the dress to her granddaughter, Fiona Nissen, when Fiona was a teenager. The fountain in the image is at the entrance to the 'Emu Bottom' homestead. George Evans squatted on land to graze sheep, along the Jacksons Creek Valley, originally known as Buttlejork Valley, in 1836 and built the homestead from local Silurian sandstone and timber. Over the years it has had a number of owners. In the 1920s the property was renamed 'Holly Green' by H.L Webb after a property in Narre Warren.In the 1950s it was renamed 'Emu Bottom'. Over the years a number of fires have destroyed parts of the building and as a result, little of the original building remains. The fountain was erected in 1936 to mark the centenary of the property as well as 100 years of European settlement in theSunbury area. Martin Malone acquired a pharmacy business in Bacchus Marsh in December 1932. The business operated from premises in Main Street. He acquired the pharmacy from a Mrs A. E. Grant who briefly operated the business during 1932 after being a pharmacist in Pakenham East for a number of years. In 1936 the pharmacy moved to 143 Main Street. Martin Malone sold the pharmacy to F. Benallack in September 1947 and moved to Canterbury in Melbourne to continue his pharmacy career. The prescription books in this collection encompass entries from August 1927 until February 1937. As Malone did not acquire the business in Bacchus Marsh until 1932 the collection includes records created by earlier proprietors of the business.Detailed customer records of prescriptions dispensed by Pharmacists are held by some libraries and museums in Victoria but they are a relatively rare type of material to be preserved. These records cover a period of severe economic depression and are particularly valuable as a record of how pharmaceutical practices were conducted during times of economic hardship. . The Methodist Order of Knights was the official youth organisation of the Methodist Church of Australasia. It originated in Hurstville, NSW, on the 4th October 1914 by the then Mr and later Rev Alex Bray. Alex Bray was a Sunday School teacher and spoke to his class of the Knights of the Round Table. In 1917 the Order of Knights was officially recognised by the Sunday School Dept of the NSW Methodist Conference. Courts spread thoroughout Australia. In 1927 the High Court of NSW called for designs for a badge and in 1929 the General Conference of the Methodist Church of Australasia recognised the Order as an approved Organisation. In 1938 the Senior Section was organised into Degrees of Sincerity, Service and Sacrifice; the Junior Section into Pages' Degree with advancement to Esquire. In 1954 the Junior Section was reorganised into two groups: Pages 8 to 11 years and Esquires 12 to 15 years. The Knight's Motto: "Live Pure, Speak True, Right Wrong, Follow Christ the King, else wherefore born?" Courts of the Order: General Conference Department of the Christian Education - General Court - Provincial High Court - District Court - Local Court - Senior Court - Intermediate Court - Junior Court . The owner of the 'Autograph' book was Mary Alys (Gipps) Kirkland, the daughter of Richard Brook Woodthorpe Gipps (c.1872-1946). The family had migrated from Great Britain to Coorparoo, Brisbane, where most of the items in the album were created. In June 1925, The [Brisbane] Telegraph reported the wedding of Richard Gipps to Mary Alys Kirkland at Elvaston, The Righi, South Yarra. The bride, like the groom, was originally from Queensland, but at the time of her marriage lived with her parents at 21 The Righi. The album passed to their daughter Rosemary Alison (Gipps) Vaughan-Smith, and thence by donation to the collection of the Kew Historical Society. While the signatures are interesting, they are not rare. Rather it is the illustrations that dazzle with the surety of their design and execution. In the portraits, one can recognise the debt that Edwardian art and design owed to the Pre-Raphaelites whose serene and poised idealisations of women are exemplified in the drawings, albeit simplified for a new 20th century sensibility. Typical, is a very early portrait from 1906 of Mary Alys Kirkland by a 20-year-old Garnet Agnew (1886-1951). Agnew later became an illustrator for The Brisbane Courier and The Queenslander Illustrated Weekly, creating cover illustrations for these publications between 1926 and 1930. Another pen and ink portrait of Mary Alys Kirkland was created in 1910 by Augusta Frances Isabel Hobday (1884-1961). Augusta, with her brother and sister, Percy Stanhope Hobday and Gladys Hobday, were artists and teachers. Each was involved for many years in the Queensland Art Society. While the album has historic, aesthetic and social significance to Brisbane’s history, as a document, its preoccupations have a wider Australian relevance and importance. Compiled between 1905 and 1922, the 'Autograph' book has considerable aesthetic coherence, even though drawings and text are by different hands. Together, it provides a vivid depiction of social life and values in Brisbane in the period preceding the First World War. Like other autograph albums of the period, it is a compilation of pen and ink sketches, watercolours, quotations, poems, aphorisms and signatures. Most entries are from Queensland, particularly Coorparoo in Brisbane; friends and acquaintances from other Australian States also contributed items. The autograph album predictably contains numerous mementoes of the notable and the forgotten. It includes the signatures of the British contralto Dame Clara Butt (1872-1936) her husband, the baritone R. H. Ski-Horizon is the official journal of the Federation of Victorian Ski Clubs which began publication in 1949. The were 26 original member clubs which included Albury Ski Club, Bogong Ski Club, Myrtleford Ski Club, Tallangatta and District Ski Club and Wangaratta Ski Club. Two pioneers of Falls Creek, Tom Mitchell, M.L.A., and Martin Romuld were Vice-Presidents of the Federation.This Journal is significant because it documents the early development of skiing in Victoria.The journal features stories and events chronicling developments in Victoria and internationally. The Leyland Cub closest to the camera is No 49 new 8/1936. This bus had been re-engined to Diesel by this time. May explain the missing engine cover. The other Leyland Cub maybe in the same 41-50 number sequence. Kempthorne Lighting Pty. was established as Coffey Lanterns in East Malvern, Melbourne Victoria in 1931 by brothers Selwyn and Owen Coffey. They manufactured lighting fixtures and fittings including oil lamps for marine use as well as for the domestic market. In early 1936 two other brothers, Erle and Terence had joined the company which was renamed Kempthorne Lantern Works Pty., Ltd. In 1946 Kempthorne joined with a small design team who had developed a domestic fan to form the subsidiary, Mistral fans. The company previously known as Kempthorne Holding Ltd was listed on the stock exchange in 1968. In 1977-1979 Kempthorne Mistral Ltd. Was a holding company comprising of Kempthorne Lighting Pty., Ltd. & Mistral Fans Pty., Ltd. An early Australian made marine lamp by a significant manufacturer that is still in business today making electrical equipment. The item is an important artefact that was made by an early Australian business that started in the 1930s. Over the years this company has demonstrated many innovations to the manufacturer of electrical items. The Sydenham gardens were set up in 1854 to provide an area of relaxation for diggers. A German, Mr Kraemer, made extensive plantings of ornamentals and fruit trees. The area expanded to 11 acres in 1865 and 25 acres in 1916. T O Hunter owned the gardens from about 1896 and initially it was used for many types of entertainment including, picnics, festivals and sporting events. It was situated off Holdsworth Road in what is now Jackass Flat. T O Hunter was a cordial manufacturer in Macrae Street, who was prominent in many sporting areas. He was President of the Bendigo Coursing Association and raced both dogs and horses. E H "Ted" Jenkins was the paraplegic son of Harry Jenkins who bought Churchill Island in 1936 as an interest for Ted. Ted lived on Churchill Island at various times with his nurse Sr Margaret "Jimmy" Campbell, e.g. second world war when they ran a shorthorn dairy farm, and at other times lived in their home in Melbourne. He moved freely around the island in a cart pulled by a Shetland pony and had strong arms for shooting and fishing. The reel suggests he went shark fishing or deer water fishing. Ted was also keen on 'ham' radio, and had many friends from his school who became life-long friends and frequent visitors to him on Churchill Island.Wood and brass (shark?) fishing reel. Started in 1936, the aim of the Pilots was to capture the imagination and the devotion of children for the service of the Kingdom of God and to begin the training for membership of the world wide church of Jesus Christ. Pilots was mainly a week-night activity to supplement the training which boys and girls are given on Sundays, either through Family Church courses or approved Sunday School guides. Many churches were already using the lesson courses prepared by the Youth and Education Department of the Congregational Union for the Family Church. A Pilot company consisting of six or more boys meet regularly under the leadership of a Captain. The Pilot's promise was "I will learn, pray and serve all I can in the world-wide church of Jesus Christ". David Macknight Jones was born on 31 January 1910, the son of the Rev. David Samuel Jones. He attended University High School, then Ormond college, where, after graduating in Arts, he studied Theology. He obtained his Bachelor of Divinity in 1936, and was ordained in St. Stephen's Church Toowoomba, where his father was the minister. He married Elizabeth Ann McLellan in 1938, and in the same year was inducted as the first Minister in the Western patrol (Timboon), Presbytery of Mortlake, Victoria. He was called to Scots Church Shepparton in 1941, to St. Andrew's Launceston in 1947, to Kew Presbyterian Church in 1950 and to Pascoe Vale in 1965.
