Robin WELCH ( 23 July 1936-5 December 2019) Born Nuneaton, Warwickshire, England Robin Welch is one of the most highly respected contemporary British potters. The full range of his work includes large vessels with related paintings, fine drawings, and distinctive bowls and vases which explore colour, surface texture, form, detail of edge, and line. He is one of small group of significant British potters who expanded the language of throwing pots on the wheel through post-wheel additions and alteration. This gave his generally cylindrical forms a more organic and sculptural aspect, but their heavily coloured and textured surfaces were as much about painting, too, as Robin sought an integration of the visual disciplines he enjoyed. Wes WALTERS (06 August 1928 - 19 August 2014) Born Mildura, Victoria From 1940 t0 1945 Wes Walters attended the Ballarat High School. He then studied architecture at the Gordon Institute in Geelong, followed by art at the Ballarat School of Mines (a division of the Ballarat School of Mines). During his time at the Ballarat Technical Art School (later Federation University Australia) Walters studied under Neville Bunning and Taylor Kelloch, and was awarded the Ballarat Ladies Art Association Scholarship in 1948. He next moved to Melbourne to work as a commercial artist with the George Patterson advertising agency. Each evening Walters studied life drawing at the Victoria Artists’ Society and taught himself anatomy. Wes Walters excelled in both abstract and realist art. He won the Art Gallery of Ballarat’s Minnie Crouch Prize for watercolour art in 1953 and 1956. He won the prestigious Archibald Prize in 1879 for his portrait of Phillip Adams, and the sketch was completed tin preparation for that portrait. Bruce Smeaton (born 5 March 1938) is an Australian composer who is well known for a variety of Australian film and television scores in all genres, including features, shorts, television, documentaries and advertisements.[1] His scores include Picnic at Hanging Rock, Seven Little Australians, Roxanne, Iceman, and Circle of Iron. Wesley PEMBERTHY (1920- ) Born Broken Hill, New South Wales Wesley Pemberthy spent his childhood in Adelaide, South Australia. As an adult he lived in Bendigo, Ballarat, Clunes, Creswick, Daylesford and Perth. While in Perth he studied at Perth Technical School (1933-1937), followed by studies under the tutorship of Norman Lindsay in New South Wales (1938-1941). After service during World War Two Wes Pemberthy became the first Rehabilitation student at the National Gallery School, Victoria, undertaking research into the techniques of the Old Masters. He was the winner of the Sulman Award in 1955. Alan PEASCOD (1943-2007). Born England. Arrived Australia 1952. Alan Peascod was one of Australia’s most highly acclaimed ceramic artists. For over 35 years his work has been at the forefront of the Australian ceramics movement, developing radical techniques previously unexplored with his developments in unusual glazes and firing methods. His creative repertoire includes dry glazed vessels, alkaline glazes, majolica, saturated metals, and many post firing finishes. Alan's work with the very difficult reduced lustre technique is highly regarded. He was taught the method by Professor Said El Sadr in Cairo, Egypt in 1972 and this led to lifelong research of the technique throughout the Middle East and Europe. His work in the field led to the completion of his doctoral studies at the University of Wollongong in 1994. Milton Moon (1926-2019) Born Melbourne, Victoria Milton Moon attended the Central Technical College, Brisbane where he studied painting and drawing. In 1950 he undertook study in Ceramics with Harry Menmott and Mervyn Feeney at the Sandison Pottery, Brisbane. He lectured in Ceramics at Central Technical College, Brisbane, and he was awarded a Churchill a Fellowship in 1966. In 1974 he travelled and worked in Japan for a year, and established a workshop at Summertown in the Adelaide Hills. In 1984 Milton Moon was awarded the Order of Australia Medal for his services to ceramics. Milton Moon died in 2019. At the time of his death his website included the following:- "In this, my 'ninety second year,' over sixty of which I have been a potter, I remain concerned, if a little obsessed, with the challenge of making pots, which although belonging to a ceramic tradition of some eight thousand years or more, are undeniably and uniquely Australian. With all my changes of expression this has remained constant. The initial creative inspirations were drawn from the beauty of the coastal areas of Eastern Australia and from the mountain areas of the Great Dividing Range which stretch from North Queensland to the extreme South of Victoria. But the most lasting inspiration has come from the inland of Australia, more particularly from the Gammon and Flinders Ranges and from the Olary Uplands of South Australia, and more recently the Pilbara and Kimberley areas of Western Australia, where rock engravings place them as being amongst the oldest marks left by human-kind anywhere in the world. All parts of Australia are full of an ancient history stretching back through time and which today, despite white settlement, somehow still survives in legend and ritual. If it is the case that these legends do now only exist, in some muted half-life there is still the sense that they remain as a very powerful 'spirit-presence.' It is impossible to ignore the feeling that this country remains inhabited by the past. For me it is also impossible not to creatively respond to the echoes of the past, even if only through the somewhat vague process of inspiration and distillation. Albert E. Williams first studied art under Fred Foster after being awarded a scholarship to the Ballarat East Art School. In 1913 he became one of the first intake of 83 students to study the Merit Certificate at the newly opened Ballarat Junior Technical School. Williams was the second person to receive a certificate from that institution. He then studied under H.H. Smith for the Art Teachers’ Certificate at the Ballarat School of Mines Technical Art School between 1915 and 1920. Williams joined the staff of the Ballarat Junior Technical School in 1921, teaching sign writing, ticket writing and house decoration. He taught in other technical schools between 1923 and 1928, returning to Ballarat in that year to fill a vacancy left by John Rowell . Williams continued his teaching career at both the Ballarat School of Mines Technical Art School and the Junior Technical School until 1942. He taught in various other technical schools from 1943, retiring as Headmaster of the Brighton Technical School in 1964. Albert E. Williams continued producing artwork throughout his career, and was responsible for the education of generations of artists and art teachers. Inge KING (26 November 1915 – 23 April 2016) Born Berlin, Germany Arrived Australia 1951 Inge King trained as a wood carver and studied at the Berlin Academy (1937-1939), Royal Academy London (1940), and the Glascow School of Art (1941-1843) . She moved to London in 1847 and began carving organic abstract forms in wood and stone. In 1949-50 she went on a study tour to the United States of America where she was inspired to work in metal . Inge King arrived in Australia in 1951 and she completed several large scale public works. Between 1861 and 1875 Inge King lectured at the Institute of Early Childhood Development, Kew. From 1976 to 1987 she lectured in Sculpture at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. She was a founding member of the Ceminal Centre Five group, and she actively lobbied architects, governments and State galleries to include modernist sculptures in their plans and displays. In 1991 Inge King joined the first National Trust of Australia (Victoria) Public Art Committee, advising on public art at risk and worthy of Trust classification. The Australian Women's Art Register describes Inge King as having been at the forefront of developing a non figurative vocabulary in Australian Sculpture. William FRATER (1890-1974) Born 31 January 1890 at Ochiltree Castle, near Linlithgow, Scotland Arrived Melbourne, Australia in September 1910 In a lecture on modern art in 1925, Frater stated the basic position from which the rest of his oeuvre stems: 'Copying nature is not an art; … to copy effects of light tends to destroy form and colour'. Frater gave aggressive leadership to the small group of modernists in the 1920s. His example, teaching, lecturing and crusty style of polemic did much to disrupt the academic style as the arbiter of pictorial values and to pioneer a change of taste in the community.His approach in the 1930s was markedly indebted to Cézanne, especially in the portraits which predominated until his retirement from stained-glass designing in 1940. Ray WOOLARD (1951-03/2024) Born Ballarat, Victoria Ray Woolard studied at the Ballarat Junior Technical School (c1967); Diploma of Art (Sculpture) at the Ballarat School of Mines/Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education from 1969-1972; a Secondary Art and Craft course at the Ballarat Teachers College c1973; and then the Victorian College of the Arts (Melbourne) 1974-75. He was studying at Ballarat Teachers' College when he completed 'Moose in High Healed Sneakers'. It became a greatly loved artwork on the Gillies Street Campus, and was moved the Mount Helen Campus in 1976 when the Ballarat Teachers' College became part of the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. Doug WRIGHT (1944 - ) Born Ballarat Doug Wright studied at the Ballarta School of Mines Art School between 1963 and 1964, followed by studies at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology from 1965 to 1966, resulting in a Diploma of Art (Fine Art Painting). Since 1974 Doug Wright has had over 20 solo exhibitions and a survey exhibition in 1993 which travelled Victorian Regional Galleries. From 1975 to 2009 Doug Wright was Lecturer in Painting at State College of Victoria (Ballarat) and University of Ballarat. This item was commissioned for the entrance of the new Administration Building at Mount Helen by the Director of Ballarat University College, is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Kylie THOMAS (14 May 1973 - ) Born Creswick, Victoria A graduate of the Bachelor of Arts (Visual Arts) (1993) and Diploma of Visual Arts (1995) from Federation University (then University of Ballarat) Kylie Thomas continued her art practice after studying under distinguished sculptors Peter Blizzard and Adrian Mauriks. This work was acquired from her graduate folio. Soon after completing her studies Kylie Thomas became an artist in residence at Ballarat Grammar School building a public sculpture for the grounds conceived by one of her selected students as part of the program. She became the youngest exhibiting applicant to be awarded the City of Port Phillip, Rupert Bunny Foundation artist in residence program. After moving to Mallacoota she was absorbed into the community as a visual artist, actor, playwright and assistant publicist. Her commissioned public artwork and sculptures as part of residences collections were all lost in the 2019 bushfires that decimated Mallacoota. Moving back to her hometown of Creswick Kylie Thomas completed a Diploma in Education qualifying as a secondary teacher, always continuing her art practice while teaching. Needing to work again, but with no desire to teach, Kylie Thomas studied Building Design and Architectural Drafting, homing in on other areas which could link back to her artistic practice. Working in this field for a short time she moved to Melbourne where she exhibited paintings and sculpture installations as part of The Melbourne Fringe Festival. She also worked in set design, and as a stage manager and theatre actor. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The materials are symbolic, the use of bone, Perspex, computer parts, found and crafted objects constructed in a resulting harmony creating a symbiotic relationship. Tapping the 4th dimension that could lift off into space and come back again, with a feeling of weightlessness, awe and suspension captured. Loris BUTTON (27/02/1951- ) Born Melbourne Dr Loris Button grew up in Melbourne, completing undergraduate studies in painting and drawing at the Phillip Institute of Technology, followed by a Master of Fine Arts degree at the University of Tasmania. Her PhD thesis employed self portraiture as a means for reflecting on the self, time and ageing in contemporary culture. From 1981 – 1986 Loris lived and studied in Hobart before returning to Melbourne. She lectured at the University of Ballarat Arts Academy from 1987. Since 1990 she has lived and worked in Ballarat and the nearby town of Creswick. Loris retired from an academic career at the Arts Academy, University of Ballarat (now Federation University) at the end of 2010. Loris has continued a post-retirement association with the Arts Academy through her role as an Honorary Research Fellow. Working with prints, paintings and drawings on handmade paper, her work is regularly shown in both solo and group exhibitions throughout Australia and overseas.
