Run number plates used for the vehicle identification system used in the AVM. Item was pushed into a slot of a reader which then recognised the identification through the series of holes on the left hand side. Fitted with metal strips, riveted on, to enable the card to be slotted into the holder by the crew member and then withdrawn when not required. Understood that the tram carried one of these at one end and then another without the holes at the other end. Number has been engraved into the plastic sheet and then painted in black. Used to identify the depot and "run number" or timetable that the tram was running on, two in each tram, to enable monitoring by inspectors and crews. The Gift box or tin, with lid, has the words "Celebrating our first year together", with the Keolis Downer EDI Rail logo and Yarra Trams logo. The box contains a silver coloured metal torch, with LED bulbs fitted with a cotton hand strap. Three AAA size batteries by Ninghai Hengjui Battery Co. contained within the dark grey foam holder. Pies with top crusts need to be vented, to allow steam to escape. Funnel-style steam vents have been placed in the centre of fruit and meat pies during cooking since Victorian times. Pie funnels were used to prevent pie filling from boiling up and leaking through the crust by allowing steam to escape from inside the pie. They also supported the pastry crust in the centre of the pie, so that it did not sag in the middle, and are occasionally known as 'crust holders'. Older ovens had more problems with uniform heating, and the pie funnel prevented boil-over in pie cooking. The traditional inverted funnels, with arches on the bottom for steam to enter, were followed by ceramic birds; and from the 1940s they have been produced in a multitude of designs. Creigiau Pottery of South Wales produced a 'Welsh Pie Dragon' in copper lustreware. This trend has been particularly noticeable in recent times, due to their increasing popularity as gifts and collectors' items rather than simply utilitarian kitchen tools. This book has been in two Warrnambool lending libraries. It has been borrowed by subscription holders from 1938 to 1950. The book was first in Hudson’s Hygienic Library at 71 Liebig Street Warrnambool. A.R.Hudson had a bookshop and newsagency at the same address. Subscribers to the library paid two shillings and sixpence to join the library and then threepence a week for borrowing the book. The library was open to 9 p.m. and was advertised as ‘The most up-to-date library in the Western District.’ ‘Hygienic’ libraries were a feature of privately-operated libraries in Australia, mostly in the 1930s, 40s and 50s. The increased interest in germ prevention and health improvement led to the ‘hygienic’ practice of sterilising the books after each borrowing. It appears that the books were wiped with formaldehyde. Following Hudson’s ownership of this book, it was in Stronach’s Library at 105B Liebig Street. There have been examples of private subscription libraries in Warrnambool since the 1860s (plus the subscription library available at the Mechanics’ Institute). After 1950, with the increase in the funding and building of public libraries, subscription libraries for the general public largely disappeared. This book is of interest as an example of the books that could be borrowed from a private subscription library in Warrnambool in the early to mid 20th centuries. This is a hard cover book of 247 pages. The cover is red and yellow with an illustration of a racing car on the front and black printing on the front and back. The spine has been reinforced with black tape which is now peeling off. The inside front cover and the back cover have stickers from lending libraries. Inside the back cover are a series of stamps. William died in 1876 and his sons continued to run the hotel until 1916, when the building was sold and the license transferred to Harold Revell, a retired farmer. The license was revoked in 1918. and the building became a private dwelling . The building is still standing although the market for which it was named is long gone. This Chancellor's academic gown was worn by Emeritus Professor Robert H T Smith AM during his time as the University of Ballarat's Chancellor from 2005 -2012. He studied at the University of New England, then went on to complete a Master's Degree at Northwestern University of Evanston, Illinois and a received a PhD from ANU in 1962. He spent much of his career in Canada and upon returning to Australia had posts of Vice-Chancellor at The Universities of Western Australia & New England. Academic gowns distinguish between the University's senior office holders and our graduates. Federation University's Chancellor wears a blue robe that is trimmed with gold and features a gold embroidered frog at the shoulder and gold oak-leaf braid below the arm hole. The Deputy Chancellor and the Vice-Chancellor also wear blue robes, with gold trims and different designs inclorporating the gold oak-leaf braid, ord or tassels. The members of the university Council wear black robes with a sole of gold. Our graduates wear black robes, with either a black trancher cap or bonnet (for professional octorate) with stoles, linings or trims in the colour of their discipline. "Potential blockage in the Fallopian tubes was assessed using this apparatus. It was developed by American gynaecologist Isidor Clinton Rubin (1883-1958). It blows carbon dioxide, via a cannula, into the uterus. The ease with which gas escaped through the Fallopian tubes was reflected by pressure changes on an instrument called a manometer. Blockage of the tubes is often due to previous infection or surgery. It is a common cause of infertility. Rubin’s test formed a standard part of infertility investigations for many years. The City of Moorabbin Historical Society was formed c 1960 by a group of Moorabbin residents who were concerned that the history of the area should be preserved. A good response to a call for items related to the historical area of Moorabbin Shire brought donations of a wide variety of artefacts which are now preserved by the current members of CMHS at Box Cottage Museum . Helen Stanley, Secretary of CMHS, began producing a Newsletter for members in April 2007 to provide current information and well researched items of historical interest. Helen Stanley has produced a bi-monthly Newsletter, 2007 - 2013, for the members of the City of Moorabbin Historical Society that contains well researched interesting historical items, notification of upcoming events, current advice from Royal Australian Historical Society , Museums Australia Victoria and activities of Local Historical Societies. The Newsletter is an important record of the activities of the CMHS. The Blackman family were early settlers in Moorabbin Shire A4 paper printed both sides x1. This magic lantern or slide projector was used to project glass slides on to a screen The magic lantern was the chief visual entertainment for the public before the introduction of the moving picture and consequent cinema entertainment. This one probably dates from about 1915 but its provenance is not known.This magic lantern is an important and interesting object as it shows us the way people in the early 20th century were entertained. The few people who owned this type of projector would give public showings of slides of people and scenes and sometimes raise money for a charitable cause in this way. This is a glass slide projector or magic lantern with a rectangular metal lantern body partly open at the back. The back has a top section that is attached with a metal hinge and lifts up and outwards. The lantern base also has a side opening with a metal knob for opening and a metal panel with a blue glass inset. Inside the lantern body is the lamp and an electric cord (the illuminant system may have originally been fuelled by paraffin or another oil burner). On top of the lantern body is a smaller rectangular metal box in two sections. This can be removed. The illuminant system is brass and slides out. It has two mechanisms for adjusting the focus and a covering over the lens opening which can be pulled up. There is also a wooden slide holder which can be pulled in and out of the projector. ‘W.B. Arthur Allsop went into the business office at Bendigo (Vic.) of the late Mr. Alfred Joseph. He later operated as an independent bookmaker. Arthur Allsop was a partner in the firm of Kelly and Allsop and was involved in mining and speculation in Bendigo. He was elected as a member of the Bendigo Stock Exchange in 1906. He started his athletic career at picnic sports and was a fine athlete winning many foot races. For 15 years he acted as secretary of the Sandhurst City Fire Brigade, he was captain of the Bendigo lacrosse team. He was a fair cricketer, and played against the English and Australian Elevens. He played football, and acted as secretary to the Bendigo Football Club. In later years he played bowls and captained pennant teams. He was a Past District- Grandmaster in the M.U.I.O.O.F. Allsop eventually moved to Melbourne and then Sydney working as a bookmaker. He died in Sydney in 1921. His wife Belle died in Bendigo in 1914 and is buried in the Bendigo Cemetery.Ten betting record books of various sizes and one card holder that belonged to Bookmaker Arthur Allsop. All books have black leather covers. The machine was most recently used by donor's father c2008 to knit socks, but had been used for many years earlier. According to family history, it is believed that the machine came to Australia with donor's grandparents in the early 20th century, and was created c1890-1900. It is still in working order and a demonstration was given by the donor during the acquisition process.Griswold stocking knitter machine. Black steel manual machine which clamps on to the edge of a table and is operated by turning a handle. Centre of machine is a cylinder which can be lined with pins to create the sock/stocking. Two detached parts of the machine include a bobbin holder and yarn feeder. The 1924 building of the Glenormiston Butter and Cheese Factory Company Limited is one of the more intact butter factories in the state. This building, together with the 1936 addition, stand free on the site and make up the total complex. Architecturally interesting, Glenormiston gains visual importance from the bi-chromatic banded chimney, one of the best diary industrial chimneys in the state, and the elegant design and detailing of the complex which indicated the added importance placed on the industry in the western district over and above mere commercial concerns. The factory is noted for its aesthetic impact gained by being situated outside the township in a clear rural situation at the foot of Mount Noorat. The Glenormiston/Trufood connection is technologically significant for its innovative role in establishing the dried skim milk powder industry, once a site of high tourist importance. The bottom lid is not removable however the top lid is removable to allow the contents (Cinnamon Spice) to be refilled. The lid has thirteen small holes which allow the contents to be shaken out. Maori's Idol (September 1972 – 20 October 2006) was an Australian Standardbred racehorse. He was the first Australian trotter to break two minutes with a time of 1:59.3 on 19 November 1977 at Moonee Valley. Maori's Idol became one of Australia's greatest trotters, with a record 24 successive race victories before placing third in the 1978 Melbourne Inter-Dominion Final. He is still the trotting record holder with 22 wins in a season.He was so superior to his rivals that he may have gone through his career unbeaten had he been placed to advantage by his connections.
