Biographical note: Fred Holt (1914-1993), a son of Edmund and Ruby Holt, joined the Bank of Australasia (now ANZ) as a clerk in 1933. His banking career was interrupted at age 26, in 1941 when he volunteered for services in the Royal Australian Navy. Fred Holt grew up in Surrey Hills; brother of Alan Holt. At the time of enlistment he was living with his parents at 9 beatrice Avenue, Surrey Hills. He married Euphemia Craig in 1945. This is a personal account of Lieutenant Frederick Sutton Holt's service in World War II from 1940 onwards, as a member of the Royal Australian Navy Volunteer Reserve. He served on HMS Terpsichore. He was mentioned in dispatches for skill, determination and bravery in anti-U-boat operations whilst serving with HMS Troubridge, Terpsichore and Vetch. (REF: Commonwealth Gazette 13/3/1945). Marjorie Morgan discovered some of his carvings and found nothing about the carver. She set herself the project and contacted many family members who had received a carving as a gift. She organised a family reunion so everyone could bring their carvings to one place (Surrey Gardens) and have them photographed for the book. Some relatives even came from New Zealand.This book traces the recorded life of John Kendrick Blogg, prominent citizen, industrial chemist, poet and woodcarver. This book celebrates the achievements of the Bendigo Community Bank after 15 years in Surrey Hills and Canterbury. The Surrey Hills branch was opened in the bank site previously operated by the CBA (Commonwealth Bank of Australia) after it took over the State Savings Bank of Victoria (SSB) which has the building constructed for bank use in 1916. A public meeting to garner support for opening a branch of the Bendigo Community Bank was held in the Surrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre. One of those pushing for restoration of banking services in the area was Damien Hudson, son of real estate agent Ray Hudson. He subsequently became a member of the Surrey Hills Community Bank Board. Beryl's father Dave Mair was a keen sportsman and founder of the Kangaroo Social Club of cricketers. Beryl married Lance Young. This is part of a large collection relating to the Mair, Deakin and Young families.In Europe autograph books have a history that can be traced back to 15th century university students. In Australia autograph albums were particularly popular towards the end of the 19th century, although there are known examples as far back as the 1830s. The increase in popularity coincides with printing and book binding becoming more affordable. Autograph books came in many sizes but were typically small with blank pages, usually in pastel colours. The books were often exchanged so the gathering of autographs was a very social pastime. Pages were filled with not only names, signatures and personal details but also poems, limericks, drawings, personal messages, small pieces of verse, and other mementos, such as pressed flowers, locks of hair and even embroidery. Although they could be very personal, unlike a diary they were meant to be viewed as part of the exchange. Autograph books from the 1950s may have a different focus. Although it remained common to collect the autographs of friends it was also highly desirable to collect the signatures of the famous, especially rock and television stars. Autograph books are of social relevance because they reflect the sentiment of the era of creation; they can also be reflective of social change, major political events or new inventions.A small autograph book with a mottled brown cover and faded pastel pages with gold edging. Christopher Joseph Sarovich married Susannah Botley. There are a number of spellings of his surname. He was involved in trade along the Murray River and they met at this time. They moved to Melbourne and the Sarovich family had a furrier family business in Port Melbourne, but resided in Surrey Hills. They owned a number of houses along Whitehorse Road, including the site of the Balwyn Community Centre. The last remaining property in family hands was sold to the Camberwell Council by Mrs Margaret (Peg) Grossman, nee Sarovich. Frederick William Mawson and his wife Mary (nee Mullard) and baby daughter, Beatrice Mary migrated to Victoria as steerage passengers, arriving in Melbourne on 1 July 1882 on the sailing ship the ‘Holmsdale’. They settled in Bona Vista Avenue, Surrey Hills (house demolished) and he established a jam factory in Boundary (Warrigal) Road. Further children of the family were Harriett, Muriel, Ethel, Winifred, John and Frederick William (Jnr). The later died in WW1 and there is a transcript of his diary in this collection. Four of the daughters became nurses, three serving in WW1. The other son John became a local builder, who after the war built 'Holmsdale' in Union Road as a convalescent home to be run by his sisters. After the death of his first wife Frederick (Snr) married Catherine Small, a widow with children of her own.The family were early settlers in Surrey Hills and their story in relation to the service of local men and women during WW1 is well documented.Vertical file of information related to the Mawson family which includes: 1. Theodore Hendy (architect) established the 1st Surrey Hills Scout Troop on 18 June 1909. His daughter was Mrs Alan Duck of Blackburn. The first edition of the troop's bulletin 'The Boomerang' was printed in January 1937. The Scout Association of Victoria have no records before 1914.Thereafter records are incomplete. Girls: L - unknown; R - Barbara Fair. The Queen Carnival was a fundraiser for the Holy Trinity Tennis Club. The Queen Carnival Coronation was held in the Canterbury Memorial Hall on 11 June 1940. Mrs F Eastwood was the trainer and the Honorary Secretary of the tennis club. The donor Mary Holborn married Geoffrey Stroud Clucas in 1946 in Surrey Hills.The photo documents a social fundraising practice common in the early 20th century. Queen carnivals were also popular in New Zealand. In both countries they were particularly common during World War I and in the years after, when they were used to raise funds for returned soldiers. The first such carnival is believed to have been held in Napier, New Zealand, in 1913.
