Book review from The Courier, titled "Tram ride to success", reviewing a book "The Promise of Gold and its results" written by David Griffiths. Looks at the life and work of John Garibaldi Roberts a supporter of the Arts and Chief Accountant of the Melbourne Tramway and Omnibus Co (MTOCo) and later the manager of the cable tram system for the MMTB. He retired in 1923. Has photos of the family, John at his work desk in 1910 and the directors of the MTOCo. Item written by Caleb Cluff of The Courier. One of Roberts guests was C J Dennis, who wrote Songs of the Sentimental bloke" while staying at Roberts place in the Dandenongs which had been formed from disused horse buses. Textbook, Vera Scantlebury Brown and Kate Campbell, A guide to the care of the young child : infant and pre-school ages : fourth edition, 1958
Vera Scantlebury Brown was born in Linton in 1889, a daughter of Dr George Scantlebury and his wife Catherine, née Baynes. Vera undertook medical training at Melbourne University between 1907 and 1913. After serving in the British Army Medical Unit during World War I, she worked in various positions in Melbourne hospitals and then studied in the US and Canada. In 1926 she was appointed Director of Infant Welfare by the recently established Victorian Department of Health, and became responsible for the development of maternal, infant and pre-school services in Victoria. In 2023 a statue of Vera Scantlebury was erected in Linton's Avenue of Honour in Denison Street. This copy of the book appears to have been owned/used by Barbara Safstrom of Linton.Textbook for nursing students and other health professionals. First compiled by Dr Vera Scantlebury Brown, and published as a "Guide to Infant Feeding". Book revised (with Kate Campbell) in 1941, 1951 and 1958. The subject item was made in England by W&T Avery a British manufacturer of weights and weighing machines. The company was founded in the early 18th century and took the name W & T Avery in 1818. The undocumented origin of the company goes back to 1730 when James Ford established the business in the town of Digbeth. On Joseph Balden, the then company’s owner’s death in 1813 William and Thomas Avery took over his scale making business and in 1818 renamed it W & T Avery. The business rapidly expanded and in 1885 they owned three factories: the Atlas Works in West Bromwich, the Mill Lane Works in Birmingham and the Moat Lane Works in Digbeth. In 1891 the business became a limited company with a board of directors and in 1894 the shares were quoted on the London Stock Exchange. In 1895 the company bought the legendary Soho Foundry in Smethwick, a former steam engine factory owned by James Watt & Co. In 1897 the move was complete and the steam engine business was gradually converted to pure manufacture of weighing machines. The turn of the century was marked by managing director William Hipkins who was determined to broaden the renown of the Avery brand and transform the business into specialist manufacture of weighing machines. By 1914 the company occupied an area of 32,000m² and had some 3000 employees. In the inter-war period, the growth continued with the addition of specialized shops for cast parts, enamel paints and weighbridge assembly and the product range diversified into counting machines, testing machines, automatic packing machines and petrol pumps. During the second world war, the company also produced various types of heavy guns. At that time the site underwent severe damage from parachute mines and incendiary bombs. Then from 1931 to 1973, the company occupied the 18th-century Middlesex Sessions House in Clerkenwell as its headquarters. Changes in weighing machine technology after World War II led to the closure of the foundry, the introduction of electronic weighing with the simultaneous gradual disappearance of purely mechanical devices. The continued expansion was partly achieved through a series of acquisitions of other companies. After almost a century of national and international expansion, the company was taken over by GEC in 1979. Keith Hodgkinson, managing director at the time, completed the turn-around from mechanical to electronic weighing with a complete overhaul of the product range of retail sales of industrial platform scales. In 1993 GEC took over the Dutch-based company Berkel and the Avery-Berkel name was introduced. In 2000 the business was in turn acquired by the US-American company Weigh-Tronix, who already owned Salter, and is today operating as Avery Weigh-Tronix.An item used by grocers and merchants throughout the then British colonies of England to weigh store-bought goods around the mid to late 19th century. Robert Pullar Cameron was a Shire Councillor for many years. He married Penuel Hossack and had a family of James, Flora, Penuel and Alex. William Cumming was a prominent Orbost identity. He was born in Ballymena, Northern Ireland, in 1866 the son of William Cumming and Mary Ann Montgomery. He came to Australia, aged 28, and to Orbost in 1890. He farmed at Bete Bolong and during WW1 ran a butcher's shop on his farm. He was a shire councillor and served as a South Riding representative for 38 years. He was a keen Newmerella football supporter, a member of the Orbost Bowling Club as well as a director of the Orbost Butter Factory. Cumming was married to Ellen Louise Mundy and had four children ( Harold, Mary, William and Gordon).This item is an example of a hand-written account for a local early 20th century business in Orbost. It is a useful research tool.A white paper account with blue lines and black ink . It has a pink receipt attached as well as a yellow duty stamp. It is from W. Cumming, butcher, to R.P. This photograph shows Mr John Scouller, the manager, on the left with His assistant, Fred ?. Mr Scouller was the manager of the Orbost Butter Factory for 30 years and was succeeded by Mr Stafford after his retirement. The Orbost Butter and Produce Co. Ltd was registered on June 1st, 1892.The first shipment to England went rank and was only good for axle grease on wagons and carts.The milk was brought to the factory by horse and dray.Most people would take the whey home for their pigs,which were abundant on the farms in the Orbost district. First directors – James Nixon (chairman), James Cameron, Carl H. Grove, Harry Richardson, David Rhys Morris, Lachlan Ross. The factory opened 11th January, 1893 with John Scouller as the manager. The Orbost Butter and Produce Co. identity discs
The identity discs of Australian soldiers of the First World War were initially made of aluminum and then made of a fibre material. Like other soldiers of the Great War the Australian 'Diggers' were issued an identity tag or disc. The first official disc was a small flat metal disc of aluminum, then there were two identity discs issued, made of a fibre one was a red disc the other was grey and octagonal. The discs were usually stamped with the information that the Military required. The Regimental number, Regimental name, soldiers' surname and initials and his religion were on the tag. Douglas Russell was a farmer, the son of John Russell, director of the Orbost Butter Factory for 50 years. Alex Pullar Cameron died from injuries in 1919.Two World War 1 identity tags. This is a collection of five photographs taken at the Army Headquarters Survey Regiment, Fortuna Villa, Bendigo, circa 1950s to 1960s. Appearing in photo .3P is MAJ Edward Anderson MBE, who served from 1942 to 1977 and reached the rank of LTCOL. LT Frank Thorogood SB St J. served from 1960 to 1981. He reached the rank of LTCOL and was the CO of the Army Survey Regiment from 1980 to 1981. CAPT W. Greer’s service history is unknown. Appearing in photo .5P is MAJ Nolan, who served from 1939 to 1975. He was promoted to LTCOL and was the CO of the Army Headquarters Survey Regiment from 1965 to 1969. Medal - Warrnambool City Council Citizenship Award -Joyce Hayward, Mid 20th century
Joyce Hayward and her husband, Cyril came from England to Warrnambool in 1955. For 30 years she and her husband were dominant figures in the performing arts organizations in Warrnambool. Joyce was the Director of the Warrnambool Theatre Company from 1955 to 1985 and directed more than 80 plays and musicals. She founded the Warrnambool Calisthenics Club, helped develop the Holiday Actors Company and was a key figure in the revival of the Warrnambool Arts Council in the 1970s. She was a Life Member of the Theatre Group. Along with her husband she helped to develop and build the Warrnambool Performing Arts Centre. She was awarded the British Empire Medal for services to the arts in Warrnambool in 1981. Warrnambool City Council gives Citizenship Awards annually. This is a significant item as it was an important award received by Joyce Hayward, a prominent person in the Warrnambool arts scene for 30 years. This is a bronze-coloured medallion presented to Joyce Hayward as a citizenship award in 1970. It is circular in shape with the crest of the City of Warrnambool on one side and a laurel wreath with inscriptions on the other. It has a metal ring at the top for hanging the item. It is in a black leather box lined with red velvet and white silk and includes a small metal stand to display the medallion. Bob Manuel was director of Briar Hill Timber and Hardware, started in 1934 by Bob's father-in-law, Fred Squire, a pioneering building at Briar Hill, and his wife Hazel. Bob was hired in 1956 when 90 worked for the firm; that number grew to 430 during World War II, including the sawmill in the Otways. Later it provided much of the timber for Melbourne's Olympic Village. Bob and wife Lorraine were retiring to travel, and visit children Robert, Sally, Janet and Catherine. The photograph shows the location of the concrete, horseshoe shaped gun emplacement erected for the cannons. It is part of the Historic Precinct on Flagstaff Hill. The area was accessed either through the space between the Lighthouses (through the cottage grounds) or a service entrance, past the iron huts used by the Lands Department. This photograph, a print, is one of a set of five that show the site of Flagstaff Hill. It is presumed to have been taken by John Lindsay, Founding Director of Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village. One of the photographs in the set has the pencil inscription "Photo J Lindsay". It was taken in the early 1970s during the initial stages of the development of Flagstaff Hill as a Museum and Maritime Village. The photographs belonged to the donor's grandparents, who lived in the Warrnambool district of Allansford/Naringal. The photograph is a record of the site and surrounds of Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village before its development and opening in 1975. It shows the east side of the Surfside Holiday Park in its earlier days. The photograph is significant for recording the location and condition of the original concrete cannon emplacement on the Hill.Coloured photograph, glassy print, one of a set of five. Rev. Alistair Macrae, born 1950. Macrae was ordained in 1984 and served in rural, regional and inner city congregations in Victoria, at Mt Beauty, Portland and West Brunswick. He served as Moderator of the Synod of Victoria and Tasmania (2000–2003) and as Executive Director of the Uniting Church Centre for Theology and Ministry (2004–2009) in that synod. He was a member of the board of Wesley Mission Melbourne and chaired its social policy committee. Macrae was an inaugural member of the Victorian State Government's Community Support Fund and served on the advisory committee of the Community Alcohol Action network of the Australian Drug Foundation. Macrae became President of the UCA in July 2009, at the 12th Assembly. In September 2013 Macrae commenced as Minister of Wesley Uniting Church, Lonsdale Street, Melbourne. Vote of thanks was given by Cr Jessie Scott, who said it gave her special pleasure to be able to propose a vote of thanks to Miss Orr because when she worked in Ballarat Miss Orr was one of a team who saved Cr Scott's daughter when she was in the Ballarat Base Hospital. **The daughter referred to is Janet Dale who trained at the Ballarat Base Hospital July 1951 to Jan 1955 and later became a City of Ballarat Councillor. Miss Elaine Orr also trained at the Ballarat Base Hospital, June 1946 to July 1949. Leonard Vivian Lansell ( 16/10/1888-31/10/1963) was the son of mining magnate, George Lansell. He married Geraldine Orme in 1911. She was the daughter of a NSW grazier. Leonard was very active in Bendigo affairs, including President of the Bendigo Benevolent Asylum, the Bendigo Chamber of Commerce, The School of Mines and the Bendigo Art Gallery. He was also on the board of directors of several mines. As well as his Bendigo commitments, Leonard and Geraldine also ran the "Chah Singh" Station, near Moulamein, NSW. Resulting from this, he was appointed a pastoral inspector in 1929. After retiring to Toorak, the family was heavily involved in the Melbourne social scene. Diana NIKKELSON (c1943-30 December 2022) Diana Nikkelson is a Ballarat-based Gunditjmara elder. Her grandfather was Watchobaluk. A part of the stolen generation, Diana Nikkelson was one of 10 children, and she had nine children of her own. A founding member of the Ballarat and District Aboriginal Co-operative in the late-70s, Diana Nikkelson was a board director for 16 years and chair for six years. She worked on the Bunjil the Eagle installation at the Koorie Playground at Lake Wendouree, and designed the goanna which was etched into the paving along Police Lane in 2006, and has painted murals across Ballarat. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The Art Collection features over 000 works and was listed as a 'Ballarat Treasure' in 2007.AboriginalThis work by Ballarat-based Gunditjmara elder Diana Nikkelson was commissioned by the University of Ballarat (later Federation University) for use on the Aboriginal Employment Strategy brochure. What was distinct about the Performing Arts Course at the University of Ballarat is it had students from a wide range of back grounds with an age range from 17 to 53 years. Students are keen to not only act but to write, design, direct, production manage, stage manage, design lighting and sound and create their own theatre. They also take responsibility for a large percentage of the decision making and administration. Artistic Director and Course Co-ordinator was Peter Tulloch. Card advertises the University of Ballarat 3rd Year Performing Arts Graduating Company's presentation of "Maelstrom". Writer Chris Dickins was commissioned by the graduates to write this contemporary piece. Victorian Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (VIOSH) Australia is the Asia-Pacific centre for teaching and research in occupational health and safety (OHS) and is known as one of Australia's leaders in the field. VIOSH has a global reputation for its innovative approach within the field of OHS management. VIOSH had its first intake of students in 1979. At that time the Institution was known as the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. In 1990 it became known as Ballarat University College, then in 1994 as University of Ballarat. It was 2014 that it became Federation University. VIOSH Australia students are safety managers, senior advisors and experienced OHS professionals. They come from all over Australia and industry. Students are taught active research and enquiry; rather than textbook learning and a one-size fits all approach. VIOSH accepts people into the Graduate Diploma of Occupational Hazard Management who have no undergraduate degree - on the basis of extensive work experience and knowledge. Eric Wigglesworth was born in England in 1926. He came to Australia in the 1960s. He was a specialist in accident injury prevention and continued this when in Australia. He was a Director of the Injury Research Project at the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and a Director of the Sir Robert Menzies Memorial Foundation. He became a Fellow of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health. Eric was instrumental in establishing the Graduate Diploma in Occupational Hazard Management in 1980 at Ballarat College of Advanced Education - the first tertiary-level course in accidental injury prevention in Australia. Biographical details: Born 1888, Nagambie; married Jessie Winifred Temby in 1910; died 27 Feb 1969 in Mont Albert. Mr Joseph Sutton Crow lived at ‘Strathmore’, 75 Victoria Crescent, Mont Albert from 1924-1952. In 1907 Sutton gained a Diploma of Music at the Marshall Hall Conservatorium (later the Melbourne University Conservatorium). He taught piano and organ and was organist and choir-master in several churches. From 1912-1948 he served in that capacity at the Auburn Methodist Church. In 1910 Sutton Crow was appointed Assistant Secretary at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. In 1939 he became Assistant Director and Librarian and from 1941-1945 was its Acting Director. He retired in 1945. Administrator under Sir Bernard Heinze he devoted much time to the development of the ‘Music in the Schools” programme. This led to tours of country centres taking leading musicians to give concerts in schools and for the public, introduced by a talk on musical appreciation. After retirement he organized concerts for the Council of Adult Education and in 1950, when he concluded his professional work, he was giving concerts twice annually in 144 country towns. From 1926-1939 Sutton was Manager of the Melbourne University Symphony Orchestra (which later became the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra). During some years he had been Concert Manager for local and visiting musicians such as Edward Goll, a Bohemian pianist who lived locally, John Amadio, a flautist and Sutton’s wife Jessie Temby, a soprano who sang professionally until she gave this up for family life.
