Roger de Stoop came to Australia during the Second World War when the de Stoop spinning & weaving factory in Belgium was closed during the German occupation. He had previously met Dick Best, an Australian who wanted to establish a textile factory in Australia and in 1950 they built a factory at Blackburn North importing the weaving looms and many of their skilled workers from Belgium. This badge is attached to a tie which was worn as part of an official uniform by Sister Danson (VFX151507) during the British presence in Japan following the end of the Second World War. About 16,000 Australians served in the British Commonwealth Occupation Forces, including 130 from the Australian General Hospital with whom Sister Danson presumably served. Sister Danson was born in Numurkah and served as Leiutentant with the Heidelberg Military Hospital before embarking for Japan in 1947.This badge is part of a complete uniform set held by the Shepparton RSL. The uniform has representative and historic significance as an example of the style of uniform worn by nursing staff of the Australian General Hospital during the 1940s and into the 1950s. The original Separation Tree was one of two red river gums that pre-dated European occupation, and was the site where colonists congregated to celebrate the announcement of Victoria's separation from New South Wales on 15 November 1850. This manual telephone exchange console is an important piece of equipment which provided the most efficient method of long distance communications in the 1950's to the 1980's. Communications were critical, not only for the regional Hospital, but also for large construction sites i.e. the Kiewa Hydro Scheme, especially if they are in dense rugged mountainous regions. The degree of Occupation Health and Welfare on industrial sites were at a bare minimum compared to the work scene after the 1980's.This telephone exchange console is highly significant to both the Kiewa Valley and Mount Beauty region because it was so important in the communications field relating to operational safety and work related controls. The success of any large undertaken relies heavily upon good communications. In the hospital this method of communications is still used i.e. patient to ward station. This flag system link a patient's room to the controlling nursing station. Identification of the patient needing help is crucial for swift action from the available medical staff. Similarly in large construction sites such as the Kiewa Hydro Scheme, successful instant communications was also essential. This switchboard required a 50 volt supply to successfully operate and was in use when both telecommunications and postal were under the one Federal Government carrier i.e. The Post Master General. A benefit with a line communication system (such as the one that fed this console was that interference from atmospheric conditions did not impede the connection.This console telephone switchboard (manual) unit has a shutter operation (precursor to the light indicator) to identify the caller to the telephone switchboard operator. This switchboard has a ten point indication shutter system allowing the operator to clearly identify where the caller is located. The console has a 44 connection point holes with their configurations in a triangular shape. The shutters are held closed by a small lever at the top which is opened by a small electrical charge from the incoming call. The operator uses a wind up handle to power a magneto connector(handle on the console's right side). In 1937 they were both recorded in Main Road, Eltham, Ernie's occupation as newsagent. By 1943 they were recorded in Arthur Street and Ernie was retired. A search of our records shows that Ellen died 13 July 1946 and Ernie on 29 March 1950. James Leonard Foley’s family lived at ‘Warringal’, 3 Foley Street, Kew. Like many other soldiers from Kew, he was educated at the Kew State School. He enlisted at the age of 19 in March 1915. His previous occupation is recorded as 'Blacksmith'. James sent a postcard to his mother in 1915 saying that he was ‘quite well’. He was to be killed in action on the Western Front on 24 August 1916 and is buried in the Villers-Bretonneux cemetery. Alonzo Box was the nephew of William and Elizabeth Box who resided in the Cottage 1865 - 1913. He was the 9th child of John Box 1841 - 1913 and Martha Sheldrake Box who lived in Oakleigh, Alonzo enlisted in the Army and landed at Gallipoli 25/41915. After the evacuation to Egypt he served in France and Flanders and returned to Melbourne February 1918. Alonzo was a pavier / pitcher who was employed to lay the bluestone drains for the roads and sewerage channels in Moorabbin Shire - a skilled and well paid occupation. Alonzo Box was the 9th child of John Box ,who emigrated to Australia in 1854 with his parents, George and Mary Box , and siblings who included William Box. Alonzo enlisted in the 1st AIF and landed at Gallipoli 25/4/1915. After the evacuation to Egypt he served in France and Flanders before returning to Melbourne in February 1918. He married Mary Closter in June 1918. His elder sister Rebecca, who was a missionary in China, sent a bolt of hand embroidered Chinese silk to Mary for her Wedding Dress. White Porcelain “Made in Occupied Japan” electrical insulators. Insulators can be dated from September 1945 to April 1952 during the allied occupation of post WWII Japan. Pin insulators were manufactured specifically for Australian export. Pin insulators are made of non-conductive porcelain and were used to create a barrier between outer wrapped suspended wiring and threaded wood or metal dowel. Pin insulators such these have been found on utility poles around Australia.Porcelain insulators stamped with “Made in Occupied Japan” are often viewed with much interest by collectors given their connection to WWII and short seven year manufacturing time span. Pin insulators such as these are an example of Australia’s continued electronic development which began in the late 19th century. Richard Best was an Australian Textile industry agent and Businessman. While travelling in Belgium he contacted the de Stoop family, textile manufacturers, whose business had been closed down by German occupation after the 2nd World War. They took up Dick Best's offer to relocate and join with him to set up a textile factory in Australia. Roger de Stoop was born in Flanders, Belgium in 1912 and died in Australia on 18th April 1999. The de Stoop textile factory was closed due to German occupation and when Roger de Stoop received an offer from Australian Dick Best to begin a a partnership in similar venture in Australia, he agreed, bringing looms and skilled workers with him. The company was the first to produce Belgian damask ticking in Australia. By 1970 questions were being asked about the future viability of the three Melbourne Legacy residences - Harelands, Stanhope and Blamey House - and a committee was established to look into the issue. The 1st Australian Armoured Car Squadron was raised at Puckapunyal, Victoria in January 1946 from 4th Armoured Brigade volunteers. Following two months training it deployed to Japan as part of the occupation force joining the Australian 34th Brigade. The squadron was equipped with Canadian Scout Cars and Staghound Armoured Cars. The latter were found to be unsuitable for patrol duties on Japanese roads and replaced with additional scout cars. The 1st Armoured Car Squadron returned to Australia in December 1948 and became the basis for the 1st Armoured Regiment. The photo is of Donald Hartley Rowe who was a baker at 118 Union Road. The property's rear exited on to Stirling Crescent and this photo was probably taken from kerbside of it. He was born in 1876; married Mary Gibson in 1901 and died in Surrey Hills in 1958. In 1935 his daughter Winifred (1903-1985) married Phillip Sebastien Slavin (1907-1980), known as Paddy, who took over the business. An unsuccessful attempt was made to set up a silkworm industry at Mt Alexander, to be an occupation for ladies of the district as well as to introduce the silk industry to Victoria. An attempt by women to enter the business world was beaten by difficulties: (1). Road access to the property (2). Heavy frost damage to mulberry plants. (3). Disease of silkworms. (4). Lack of quantity of leaves. (5) drought and rabbits. Experiments proved silk harvested and woven was superior to overseas products, but the venture was defeated by the climate and the surviving trees were relocated to Corowa NSWA relic of the far-sighted venture by the Victorian Ladies Sericulture Co, promoted by the charismatic Mrs Bladen Neill , who was anxious to generate employment opportunities for women..A dead branch from a mulberry tree grown at Sericulture Farm, Mt Alexander, in the early 1870s. This long limb's bark has cracked with age, forming a pattern of brown cracks. Remnants of smaller branch axilla are clearly visible.
