Document - Location Chart, The Mahogany Ship, 2007
This chart shows a possible site for the fabled wreck called the 'Mahogany Ship'. Flagstaff Hill’s collection includes other objects that some say could be relics from this Ancient Wreck, (also called the Gold Ship, or the Ancient Vessel). The chart shows the coordinates for the Summits of Griffith Island and of Middle Island. It also has the depths of the sea at various intervals and shows the shore and sand dunes, lighthouses and other reference points. The mystery of the Mahogany Ship began in 1836 when two shipwrecked sealers discovered the remains of an “ancient vessel” in the sand dunes about four miles west of Warrnambool. Since the last recorded sightings in the 1880’s the true origin of the Mahogany Ship has remained one of Australia’s most famous historical mysteries or fables. One of the more recent theories is that the vessel was one of the Portuguese ships exploring the Australian coast in 1522. For over one hundred years searchers have attempted to locate and identify the wreck. The search continues for the tangible evidence which will once and for all establish the Mahogany Ship’s place in Australia’s History.The chart represents the worldwide interest in locating the wreck of the Mahogany Ship. Locating the actual wreck or proving the existence of a Portuguese ship's wreck could change the history of the discovery of Australia. A Mahogany Ship committee was formed to gather and research information about the discovery of the wrecked ship. A large amount of money was offered as a prize for finding the wreck or parts of it. People have written books, painted images, made videos and told tales of the ship but it continues to remain a mystery or even a fable. The chart is significant for its possible link to one of Victoria’s and Australia’s maritime mysteries, the Mahogany Ship (also known as the Ancient Wreck). It is one of very few known relics that could give evidence of the existence and history of the vessel. It is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register S438 as it is one of Victoria’s oldest recorded shipwrecks. The identity of the vessel has the potential to change Australia’s history.A chart in a wooden frame, behind glass. An early black and white photograph of a sample acre of tall trees near Marysville in Victoria.An early black and white photograph of a sample acre of tall trees near Marysville in Victoria. After the devastating 1939 ‘Black Friday’ bushfires, Victoria’s tallest known trees were to be found in the Cumberland scenic reserve, 20 km north-east of Marysville. This stand of trees was set aside in the 1920s to preserve a ‘sample acre’ of tall trees. It originally contained 27 trees, the tallest of which was said to be 92 m, whilst the average height was 81 m. A severe wind storm in 1959 blew down 13 trees and left the ‘tall tree’ at a reduced 84 m (Munro 1992). An examination of the crown of this tree by arborist Tom Greenwood (Tom Greenwood pers. comm. 2001) suggested that it was unlikely that it ever reached the original figure of 92 m; the current height is 81.5 m, a figure used as the starting point for this search for Victoria’s tallest trees. This postcard was published by the Valentine Publishing Co. Pty. This jacket was worn and donated by Neil Leckie who on the Engineering staff at the School of Mines Ballarat (SMB) in the 1990s. These jackets were issued to all the trade teachers at SMB at that time. Neil was also an Army Reserve Officer, holding the rank of Major in the Royal Australian Infantry Corps.This black polyester & nylon, lined jacket has ribbing at the neck and cuffs. Document - MINING ACCIDENTS - SENSATIONAL WINDING ACCIDENT AT THE HUSTLER'S RESERVE NO 2 CO
Handwritten extract from the Bendigo Advertiser 5/12/1893 where three miners had a narrow escape in a winding accident at the Huster's Reserve No 2 Company's Mine, in Pall Mall. At the change of shift, three miners, William Merrin, Frederick Willoughby and E. Johns got into the cage on the western compartment to be lowered to the 845 ft. plat. The Driver Russel lost control of the engine and hauled the empty cage in the eastern compartment to the poppet heads. Cage went up with a crash, but the safety hooks caught it and let the rope go. The men in the cage in western compartment were very alarmed has cage hit the bearers on the 845 feet plat with considerable force. If it had crashed through the bearers they would have landed in the water below. The shaft was 1070 feet deep. The Mine Manager, S. T. Yields information and demonstrates the tickets used to transport parcels on the SEC tramway operations.Set of five packs or blocks of 25 SEC 10c Parcel Tickets. Two part printed and perforated ticket, using red or orange ink on white paper with a gummed back - used 1966 to 1969. Form No. TYE-3-590 The upper portion has a gummed strip on the rear, with price and ticket number printed onto the lower edge. The lower portion was retained by the sender, was to be initialled by the conductor, organisation name, "Parcel Ticket 10c", conditions of use, ticket number and a space where to be initialled by the conductor. Series of four Black and white photographs of tram 26 on No. 2 road at the BTPS Depot, undergoing replacement of the broken frame on the Brill 21E truck. The tramcar record sheets note that the car was lifted 15-3-1975 and lower 27-7-1975 and tested on the same day.
