Legacy House provides widows with a venue for many events, activities and social gatherings. For many years this included a monthly concert and singalong. One photo shows Legatee Eddie Jowett dancing with Billie Sims (who was President of the widows club), he would also lead the singing. Jubilee Reunion 12/12/1936 School No. 2778 established 1886 at first using a Recreation Hall in Albany Crescent near the corner of Windsor Crescent, Surrey Hills. Surrey Hills was first subdivided into urban blocks in 1883 when the train line to Lilydale was opened. Previously the children of local farmers walked to Balwyn school or to a small school in St. Brigids Church which was on the northeast corner of the present Riversdale Road, and Warrigal Road Church. Former Junior Legatee Brian Edwards set out in September 1993 to complete a flight around Australia in a tiger moth called 'Matilda' as a tribute to Legacy's 70th Anniversary. He was due to arrive at Essendon Airport on 4th October 1993 and a celebratory luncheon was held. The event was supported by Ansett Airlines and Optus Communications. The promotion in The Answer invited anyone to come to the luncheon (cost $25 a head), and greet Brian and 'Matilda'. Many school children also attended the landing. President John Stevenson and Legatee George Woodward were among those attending and are photographed greeting Brian. Brian had previously flown Matilda from the UK to Australia, covering over 12,00kms in 3 months. See also photos at 00980, 00982, 00983. Photo which was originally stuck to Jacobson photo album. Photo shows a man in a dark jacket, pale shirt and pale hat, standing or walking along a road above two houses in a steep valley, probably the valley below Monbulk Road. Man is visible from waist up. One house is probably the house which features in other photos. The name 'Belgrave' has been hand-drawn on the top of the photo in an elegant script. This photograph is one of the first photos of golfing in Mt Beauty. It is dated 1948 and it pictures three high-profile Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme staff members having a hit of golf on a rudimentary course which was the fore runner to the beautiful golf course we enjoy today. Wreath laying ceremony for Legacy widows at the Cenotaph at the Shrine of Remembrance. This is an annual event for Legacy widows at the start of Legacy Week, which is the first week in September. The photos show President David Ford carrying a wreath to be laid in the Garden Courtyard. The plants in the Garden Courtyard have been selected because they are native to the Mediterranean countries in which Australians have served. The olive tree planted by Legacy in 1972 was relocated to the new courtyard as part of the Shrine redevelopment. It stands as a centrepiece, representing peace. This is the olive tree of peace that was planted by Legacy in 1973 to mark their golden jubilee. It was relocated to the new courtyard in 2002 when the Shrine was being redeveloped. This item clearly shows the conditions covering both working conditions and housing in the construction of the Junction Dam in the 1940s. Working conditions were extreme and health and safety legislation was at its infancy. The residential buildings were intended to last only for the period of construction, however greater demand for longevity as a tourist haven prevailedThis photo of the construction of the Junction Dam, with The Bogong village as backdrop, details the harsh conditions faced by construction workers, building dams and villages to accommodate workers in the 1940s to the 1950s. Australia at this period in time, experienced a surge of population (influx of World War II refugees), which was the catalyst for developing and undergoing an enormous hydroelectricity program for the Alpine regions, both in Victoria and New South Wales. This program was initiated to supply electricity to the major southern Australian cities of Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney. It was thought that these developments would reduce, if not eliminate, the requirement for coal driven power stations. Cast iron lace was made in foundries in most cities. There were 42 such factories in Melbourne alone. It was cheaper to make than wrought iron. "Pig iron", iron ore was melted in a blast furnace, mixed with alloys and then poured into moulds usually made of sand.
