“Pennies” were awarded to the Next of Kin of soldiers who died in or as a result of the “Great War” and approximately 1.5million were issued up until the 1930’s they were accompanied by a scroll (letter) from King George with the message “‘I join with my grateful people in sending you this memorial of a brave life given for others in the Great War”. The Name of the serviceman, which appears on the medallion' is always shown without rank. This is to show that the sacrifice of all men is of equal value.Stanley Alan Morey was born in Dulwich, London, England from whence he came to Austalia and lived with his parents and elder sister in Brighton Victoria He became a fitter and turner. He enlisted in the A.I.F on the 21th April 1917 Service number 3444 and was assigned to the 59th Battalion and embarked from Sydney on the HMAT “Port Melbourne” on the 16th July 1917 He went to France from England on the 9th January 1918 and joined his unit 18th January 1918 at Le Havre Less than 3 months later he was Killed in Action. He has no known grave but is remembered by a Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France Round Bronze Medallion/PlaqueDepicts British rule of the sea (Britannia with two Dolphins), and a lion representing the British Empire. The lion stands on an eagle which represents the defeated Germany. A small insert has the Soldiers name embossed within a rectangular border. One of four carvers' chairs supplied by Old Collegians Association in 1925 for the newly erected Memorial Hall. In the 1970s these chairs were in use at the end of each table in MacFarland Dining Hall. Student chairs were similar shape but without crest or arms. Significant example of the generosity and involvement of the Old Collegians towards the establishment of the school post World War 1. The WWI Death Plaque (Dead Man's Penny) was issued to the next of kin of servicemen/women who had fallen in the Great War between 1914 and 1918.Edward S Holgate entered Ballarat College in 1894. On leaving school he became on auctioneer with the family firm S Holgate & Son, Ballarat. Before enlistment he was secretary of the Ballarat College Old Collegians Society. 'Ted' was killed at Villers-Bretonneux on 27 April 1918 two dats after his commendation in military dispatches for 'gallantry in the field on 24-25 April 1918'. Edward's brother Harry Spencer Holgate also enlisted and was killed at Zonnebeke on 11 October 1917. Of the 305 Ballarat College old collegians who enlisted in WW1 65 gave their lives for their country. This 'death penny' is representative of the incredible sacrifice given by this huge percentage of the school's community. Round disk cast in bronze gunmetal, which incorporates the following; an image of Britannia holding an oak spray with leaves and acorns, an imperial lion, two dolphins representing Britain's sea power, the emblem of Imperial Germany's eagle being torn to pieces by another lion. He transferred to 21st Squadron AFC in November 1917 and served in Palestine. He was killed a 22 August 1918 and buried at the Ramleh War Cemetery. Of the 305 Ballarat College old collegians who enlisted in WW1 65 gave their lives for their country. This 'death penny' is representative of the incredible sacrifice given by this huge percentage of the school's community. According to the school magazine 'The Minervan December 1954' the book was compiled to honour former students who were members of the forces in World War II. See file attached. The book was displayed in the ballarat College reception area until 2014. In 2013 following research by James Affleck the information contained within the book was updated and a formal honour board created and displayed in Memorial Hall together with the WW2 Pro Patria Roll of Honour. The Kokoda Track (or Trail) is a single-file thoroughfare that runs 96 kilometres (60ml) overland) - 60 kilometres (37ml) in a straight line - through the Owen Stanley Range in Papua New Guinea (PNG).The trail was First used by Europeans in the 1890s by miners struggling northwards to the Yodda Kokoda goldfields. Vietnam Vetrans Parade Sydney 1987 On October 3, 1987, around 22, 000 Vietnam veterans marched in a ‘Welcome Home’ parade through the streets of Sydney It was estimated that the parade was watched by a crowd of up to 100,000, including Prime Minister Hawke, and that it stood up to ten deep along the parade route in some places. he marchers carried more than 500 Australian flags, each flag representing a serviceman who had lost their life during the Vietnam War. These simple acts represented the reconciliatory nature of the event – the flags, standing for the nation-state, were accepted as a proper symbol for the fallen by the veterans and symbolised their reconciliation with the body politic that they felt had rejected their rightful place in the Anzac narrative after the end of the Vietnam conflict. Article covers a Memorial cost $1.3 million dollars for dedication on 4th July 1998 consisting of three curved memorial walls for Australian soldiers that died during Wold War 2. The photograph included in the article was taken on August 8, 1918 which shows B company of the 29th Battalion - a Victorian Unit - being addressed by their platoon Commander. All 5 Australian Divisions took part in the major Allied attack on the German Lines - the first time the five Australian Divisions had fought together as the Australian Corps. (Under Australian Command) It is the First memorial on the Western Front dedicated to the Australian Corps.
