Otway Districts Historical SocietyBook, Government Printer, The Education Department's Record of War Service, Victoria, 1914-1919, c.1921
From the beginning of World War 1 in August, 1914, until it ended in November, 1918, teachers from across Victoria enlisted for the Australian Imperial Force and embarked for overseas. Anzac, the Sinai Desert, the vast fields of France, and in Palestine the Education Department soldier-teachers toiled manfully thoughout. Of the 752 enlistments 724 were teachers, two were School Medical Officers, one was a School Nurse, one an Inspector of Schools, while the remaining 24 belonged to the clerical division employed by the Education Department. 146 died. But it was not only teachers who contributed to the war effort. Children and parents gave 400,000 articles of comfort sent abroad, contributed as a rough estimate 460 tons of supplies to hospitals at home, made contributions of £50,000 to The Young Workers' Patriotic Guild, and £217,419 for the war savings effort in the schools, and £422, 470 in general school subscriptions.Hardcover book, bound with brown cloth cover and gold embossed title containing 306 pages, black and white photographs and illustrations and text. This book, published to keep before teachers and children expamples of service and sacrifice in a great cause, is presented to the Hordern Vale School. Colour-tinted postcard, titled in red upper left: “RIVER YARRA AT STUDLEY PARK, KEW”. On the divided reverse, the card is addressed to “MISS JOLLEY / MELB. TRAM & O[MNIBUS]. CO / BOURKE STREET, MELB”. The sender has dated the card 21.12.08. In the upper right corner, there is a pink Victorian one penny postage stamp; sent from Melbourne on 22DE 08. (The division of the reverse of the postcard, allowing a message to be written on one half and the address on the other, was not permitted in Australia until 1905.) The manufacturer of the postcard is indicated by the initials “W.T.P”, printed in a green floral diamond, printed centre top. This was the trademark of WT Pater, printers & stationers. William Thompson Pater was born in Melbourne in 1861. His business at 271 Little Collins Street offered Christmas cards, booklets, calendars, and leather goods as well as postcards and albums.Hand-tinted postcard of the River Yarra in Studley Park, Kew. The birds-eye view is of a bridge on the Yarra (Johnston Street?) linking Kew and Abbotsford as it appeared in c.1908. On the Abbotsford side of the river, fields lead down to the river, with some remnant trees. The Kew side of the river, in contrast, due to its steep banks, retains its original vegetation. Murray GRIFFIN (11/11/1903– 29/01/1992) Born Malvern, Victoria Vaughan Murray (Murray) Griffin trained at the National Gallery of Victoria Art School from 1919 to 1923. He taught art at Scotch College (1936 to 1937), drawing and teaching at RMIT (1937 to 1940) and teacher of drawing at the National Gallery of Victoria Art School 1946 to 1953. In 1941 he was appointed an official war artist working with the 8th Australian Division in Malaya for three months. The completed works were prepared for transport to Australia but did not arrive and are lost. He was captured by the Japanese in February 1942 after the fall of Singapore and incarcerated for three and a half years as a Prisonor of war at Changi Prison, Singapore. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. He also wrote a weekly column in the Ballarat Courier. Bunning produced a bust of Australian Prime Minister, The Right Honourable J.A. Lyons from Tasmania, who died in office. Albert E. WILLIAMS (1899-1986) Victoria, Australia Albert Edward Williams was among the first to undertake the five-year, Technical Art Teacher’s Certificate (TATC) at the Ballarat Technical Art School in 1915, with work placement at the Ballarat Lithographic company. Williams taught for several years before he was selected to undertake further teacher training at the Working Men’s College, Melbourne, in 1926. He returned to teach at Ballarat in 1928, facilitating many student activities, while pursuing the arduous Art Teacher’s Certificate. From its inception in 1914, it was 30 years before the first candidate achieved the certificate’s exhaustive requirements. This artwork was completed for the Drawing Teachers' Secondary Certificate at the Ballarat Technical Art School, a division of the Ballarat School of MInes. Speeches printed after a dinner to honour Legatee Stan Savige. The dinner on Saturday 4 November 1939 was held to celebrate Brigadier Savige's appointment to Command the 17th Infantry Brigade, 6th Division, 2nd AIF. The speeches were given by Legatee Eric Russell as Legacy President in 1939, Sir John Gellibrand and a response by Stan Savige. The introduction by Legatee Russell mentions that Legacy Patron, Sir John Gellibrand 'had the inspiration which caused the Legacy movement' and Stan Savige was revered as the Founder of Legacy. Savige's response includes that he received the inspiration from Gellibrand in a letter (not as is commonly related that he visited Hobart). Savige's subsequent exploits in WWII are detailed in Chapter 4 of 'There goes a man' by W.B. An article from the Melbourne Legacy Bulletin on the death of Legatee Ken Green (President of Melbourne Legacy in 1981). The Bulletin published articles on Legatees when they passed away. Legatee Green was born in 1917 and died in 1987. More details of his life are outlined in the articles. Legatee Ken Green served with the 15th Australian Field Company RAE 2nd AIF during World War 2. He continued with Citizen Military Forces after the war. He attained the rank of Major General with the 3rd Division between 1970-73. He joined Melbourne Legacy in 1959 on the nomination of Legatees Robert Myers and John Standish. The article was part of an album of past presidents from 1965 to 1989. It's an ephemeral site-specific work about how the Melbourne suburb of Greensborough has transformed over time. This area's exceptionally fertile soil [used by] by white settlers for farms, market gardens and orchards reshaped the Wurundjeri's traditional lands - and today the private sale and division of these farms informs the streetscape and town plan. With soil sourced locally this work reveals some of the area’s history - the text running around the perimeter was written by former resident Val Wilson, a snippet of her recollections of growing up in the area in the 1950s. The arrows and text act like a compass to orientate this site with greater Melbourne. The Stanley Works was founded by Frederick Trent Stanley in 1843, originally a bolt and door hardware manufacturing company located in New Britain, Connecticut, USA. The Stanley Rule and Level Company was founded in 1857 by Henry Stanley in New Britain, Connecticut. In 1920, this company was independent from Trent Stanley's works but they merged with the separate but related Stanley Works, that was founded by Henry Stanley's cousin Frederick Trent Stanley, and continued operating as its hand tools division. At this time after the merger the “Sweetheart” Trademark was adopted for tools made between 1922 to 1935 with augers manufactured during this time having the “AA” trademark and this is when the Stanley company we know today came into being. Around 1937, Stanley acquired the British J. A. Chapman company, a British manufacturer of carpentry tools and other items (including bayonets during World War I) formerly located in Sheffield, from Norman Neill. This helped Stanley to enter the British market.A early tool manufactured by an emerging company that today produces tools for sale in just about every country in the world. The subject items trademark shows the item was produced between 1922-1935 at a time when the company had just merged and was transitioning into Stanley Tools Ltd.Nose bit auger. Document - History Tocumwal Troop
The Tocumwal Troop was the most northerly sub-unit of the 20th Light Horse regiment. It was a highly successful troop in inter-troop competition and also provided the mounted escort to the new Governor of Victoria, Sir Winston Dugan, in July 1939. The 20th Light Horse (Victorian Mounted Rifles) was raised in 1920 as part of the 3rd Cavalry Brigade, 2nd Cavalry Division, Citizen Military Forces, with Headquarters at Seymour and depots along the Goulburn Valley from Mansfield to Tocumwal in southern NSW. In December 1941, 20th Light Horse (Victorian Mounted Rifles) converted from horse to mechanised, initially as 20th Motor Regiment. In 1943 the Regiment was deployed to Merauke, Dutch New Guinea. Upon its return in April 1945, the Regiment was redesignated 20th Pioneer Battalion. 1. Dorothy Dempsey was a student of Arthur Thomas Woodward (see No.2). She was considered a "promising artist" who exhibited in Bendigo and Melbourne in the late 1930's - early 1940's. The Bendigo Art Gallery has one of her paintings. 2. Arthur Thomas Woodward (1865, Birmingham, England- 12/2/1943 Bendigo) Studied and taught art in England, Paris and Antwerp before coming to Victoria in 1889. Whilst briefly the Art Director of the Sale School of Art, he married Emma Jane Stokes in 1892. He then became the Head of the Art Department at the Bendigo School of Mines, where he remained until his retirement in 1921. He was responsible for the art division of the Victorian Gold Jubilee Exhibition. and was heavily involved in the establishment of the Bendigo Art Gallery. He lived at "The Roselands", View Street, where he also conducted private art lessons after his retirement.Beige soft cover booklet of 32 pages. The Heritage Troop of 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles was a very public face of the regiment during the 1980s and early 1990s. It conducted one royal escort, several vice-regal escorts and numerous VIP escorts in the border, north-east and wider Victorian locations. The royal duty was at the opening of Hopkins Barracks, Puckapunyal by HRH Prince Charles accompanied by HRH Princess Diana, 31 October 1985. Major General Kevin Cooke GOC 3rd Division authorised the establishment of the troop in February 1980. Captain (later Major) Robert Morrison was the troop leader and the driving force behind the concept seeing potential where others did not. The troop was made up mainly by serving members of 8/13 but did include some civilian members. Training and advice came from former light horsemen: Des Martin (8LH), Norm Whitehead (21LH), Bob Fyffe (20LH) and Fred Trickey (Riding Master RMC). Henry MORITZ (1931- ) Born Mainz, Germany Arrived Australia c1952 Henry Moritz was an experienced commercial artist when he left Germany for Australia. After working as a railwayman, coal miner, fruit picker and steelworker, he started teaching commercial art at the Ballarat School of Mines Technical Art School in 1963. He moved to the Mount Helen Tertiary Division, and was head of the Art School at the Ballarat College of Advanced Education (BCAE) when he produced this work. The Ballarat College of Advanced Education logo was derived from the Southern Cross depicted on the Eureka Flag, which was adopted by Ballarat College of Advanced Education in 1978. The logo was designed by former student Debra Garton, who graduated with a Diploma of Art and Diploma of Education. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Max COWARD ( -1991) Born Ballarat Max Coward was training to be an art teacher at the Ballarat Technical Art School from 1937 to 1941. He enlisted in the A.I.F. and was a Naval Trainee at Flinders Naval Depot in 1941. During these years Max Coward was described as a cartoonist and illustrator, and was was attached to the Naval Intelligence Division in 1945, producing stories and drawings for the Navy newspaper Dit. His work was reproduced in the Christmas annual, HMAS Mk IV and the Army educational journal, Salt. He was a foundation staff member at the Burwood Teachers' College art department when it opened at Box Hill in 1954, transferring to the Burwood Campus in 1955. Upon his retirement he moved to Queensland to start a graphic arts consultancy. Coward was active as a printmaker during the 1970s. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The Art Collection features over 1000 works and was listed as a 'Ballarat Treasure' in 2007.Framed limited edition linocut by Max Coward. 'Hen Party' uses simplified forms reminiscent of the shapes gracing 'moderne' interiors of the 1950s and 1960s. Eleanor (Nornie) GUDE (1915- 2002) From 1931 to 1936 Nornie Gude attended the Ballarat Technical Art School, a division of the Ballarat School of Mines. She was accepted into the School at the age of 15 because she was so advanced in painting. She studied at Ballarat Technical Art School, for five years before progressing to Melbourne’s National Gallery of Victoria Art School. Nornie Gude won many art competitions, including first prize at the 1936 Melbourne Royal Agricultural Show for still life drawing, and in 1941 became the first woman to win the National Gallery Students Travelling Scholarship. As an artist Nornie Gude held no theories and was once heard to say, “You spend your first 20 years learning technique and the next 20 years losing it”. Benjamin Bolton and his two eldest sons, William and Arthur, began a printing business known as Bolton & Sons on March 25, 1885. The location of the original printing business was in High Street, Bendigo but later moved to Williamson Street where the business underwent a name change to Bolton Bros and expanded into manufacturing paper bags and other stationery lines. In 1902, Bolton Bros moved to 43 Mitchell Street which housed the retail stationery department and the main office, while the printing factory was on the second and third floors. Next door at 47 Mitchell Street the wholesale division and machine service department operated. William and Arthur Bolton and their sons travelled throughout central and northern Victoria selling their own products and representing other companies. Bolton Bros continue to trade today with fifth generation family ownership continuing the tradition. From Wikipedia: Major General Sir John Gellibrand, KCB, DSO & Bar (5 December 1872 – 3 June 1945) was a senior Australian Army officer in the First World War, Chief Commissioner of the Victoria Police from 1920 to 1922, and a member of the Australian House of Representatives, representing the Tasmanian Division of Denison for the Nationalist Party from 1925 to 1928. Concerned about the plight of fellow ex-servicemen, whose businesses were often failing, Gellibrand banded together with like-minded individuals to form the Hobart Remembrance Club. This organisation aimed to support ex-servicemen by providing employment and support for their businesses. The Hobart Club inspired the formation of Legacy Australia in Melbourne, which over time became a national movement, expanding its scope to the care of ex-servicemen's widows and their families. Sir John Gellibrand is considered to have influenced Stanley Savige to commence the process to form Legacy in September 1923. Also a large black and white photo of him. "Alfred Argent, born in Lang Lang 1927 comes to the Presidency of Melbourne Legacy with a unique service record. At 18 he enlisted in the A.I.F. He was discharged to enter Duntroon, was commissioned and served in Japan, Korea, the UK, Malaya, Borneo, Vietnam, and the United States. He then joined the Public Service and served in the Antarctic Division, Public Services Board and the Bureau of Air Safety Investigation. Currently he is a part-time member of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal." He joined Moorabbin branch of Legacy in 1976. The article was part of an album of past presidents from 1965 to 1989. The folder included biographical details and obituaries, eulogies and death notices of prominent Legatees. Some decades ago a card sorting set for the identification and description of Australian timbers was developed for timber species which were available commercially and were in common usage, by the Commonwealth of Australia (CSIRO, Division of Forest Products) To complement and inform this national timber set each State or Territory developed reference timber sets of representative species. The Commercial Timbers of Victoria set was Victoria’s most recent (circa 1984) expression of this Victorian timber samples were sourced from logs selected by Forest Commission of Victoria (FCV) District Foresters and milled locally. Kiln drying and machining was carried out at timber producers Row, Web and Anderson, in Port Melbourne. Labeling and boxing was done by FCV Timber Inspectors, with box and booklet design and graphics handled in-house More recent timber samples were badged as Conservation Forests & Lands, reflecting historical government restructuring in the early 1980s Info: Simon MurphyProvided the public, industry (timber and associated), and educational facilities with a reference collection of notable Victorian timbers.
