The WW1 Memorial Plaque - also known as the Death Penny or Dead Mans Penny - was awarded to personnel killed as a result of war. The Plaque was designed by Edward Carter Preston, Liverpool, United Kingdom. Over 1.3 Million World War One Memorial Plaques were issued. Plaques were awarded to the next of kin of those killed in action and were accompanied by a memorial scroll from the King. They came to be known as the "Dead Man’s Penny", because of the similarity in appearance to the much smaller penny coin which itself had a diameter of only 1.215 inches (30.9 mm). This WW1 Memorial plaque was awarded in the memory of 3638 Edward James Thompson. He served as a Private in the 60th Australian Infantry Battalion and was killed in France on 19 July 1916. RVIB Auxiliaries raised monies for the organisation at a grassroots level, via a variety of meetings, fundraisers and events. To keep them in touch with head office and to let branches what other branches were doing across the state, regular newsletters were sent out. In the 2002 newsletters, celebrations were held for Barwon Heads (60 years), Cohuna, Wodonga, Murtoa, Yarrawonga (70 years), news from around Victoria as well as events and staffing changes at head office, and memories of those Auxiliary members who had passed in the year. Amy Huxtable was born at Cheltenham in 1918, to Robert Henry Huxtable and Violet A Dagg. Her father was an installer for an oil company and travelled the State. taking his family with him. She completed her education at the Bendigo High School and later attended the Bendigo Business College, becoming an expert shorthand writer. Her first position was as a copy writer with Radio 3BO, in the mid 1930s. She worked with an advertising agency in Melbourne and then with the Age,newspaper. In 1953, Miss Huxtable was appointed temporarily to succeed Miss E B Millane as social editress of the Bendigo Advertiser, during the latter's absence abroad. In 1956, Amy travelled abroad and on her return in 1957 was appointed permanently as Women's editor, a position she held for twenty-three ears. During her early years with The Advertiser she wrote under the name Toora, but in later years her own name became widely known. Miss Huxtable was well known both in her professional capacity and through a interest and involvement in community activites. She was life governor of the Bendigo Hospital, the Bendigo Home for the Aged, and Mirridong Home for the Blind, she was a member of Soroptimist International and the Business and Professional Women's Club. Amy was also a tireless worker for the spastic society and a strong supporter of the YWCA. When Amy Huxtable died at Mt AJvernia Hospital on 16 January 1980 Mayor Campbell ordered the city flag to be flown at half-mast. "Lowering the flag is the least we can do for such a lady" Cr Campbell said. Douglas Lockwood, editor of the Bendigo Advertiser said, "She was a devot d colleague who gave her craft and her newspaper the kind of service which identified a rare and generous spirit." She was a true professional who decided to make Bendigo her home. More than 300 people packed St Paul's Church for her funeral ervice the bell tolled as the casket was carried from the church. At a ceremony in the Conservatory Gardens on No ember 22 1981 The Amy Huxtable Memorial Committee presented to the City of Bendigo, a garden seat in memory of the late Miss Huxtable. This Bendigo manufactured seat was a fitting tribute to one ofBendigo's most loved and esteemed citizens. Mrs. Helen Jackson, originally from Melbourne, moved to Beechworth in the 1950s for the purpose of her husband's employment with the Mayday Hills asylum as a vegetable gardener. Living in Beechworth for over 40 years, Mrs. Jackson spent her time as a devoted full-time mother raising her family of biological and foster children where she has fond memories of Beechworth being a safe and fun place to live - "Oh it was, life was fun!". This oral history recording was part of a project conducted by Jennifer Williams in the year 2000 to capture the everyday life and struggles in Beechworth during the twentieth century. This project involved recording seventy oral histories on cassette tapes of local Beechworth residents which were then published in a book titled: Listen to what they say: voices of twentieth century Beechworth. These cassette tapes were digitised in July 2021 with funds made available by the Friends of the Burke.The oral history record of Mrs. Helen Jackson is a representative insight into life in Beechworth from the 1950s onwards, specifically in the descriptions of commerce, business, family, and leisure activities for residents of the town during the post-war period until the present day. Mrs. Jackson's recollections have a social value to the town of Beechworth as a local perspective on its development and contributes to its cultural and social history. This oral history account is socially and historically significant as it is a part of a broader collection of interviews conducted by Jennifer Williams which were published in the book 'Listen to what they say: voices of twentieth-century Beechworth.' While the township of Beechworth is known for its history as a gold rush town, these accounts provide a unique insight into the day-to-day life of the town's residents during the 20th century, many of which will have now been lost if they had not been preserved.This is a digital copy of a recording that was originally captured on a cassette tape. The cassette tape is black with a horizontal white strip and is currently stored in a clear flat plastic rectangular container. As an incentive to improve school work and develop student leadership, from 1927 former Clarendon PLC student Nellie Sutherland (Coulter) donated a silver cup each year. The cup soon became a prestigious award. It was awarded to the girl holding the leading place in 'work, sport and above all moral character'. The cups were awarded annually until to 1951. Mrs Sutherland made these gifts partly to remember her school days under Mrs Kennedy and because the school in Mair Street was built on the site of her former home. But the main reason was in memory of her two brothers Jason and Les killed during World War 1. In 2001 the Junior School Parent Group funded the ongoing award for a Year 6 student. The award criteria in 2001 were 'general excellence in academic achievement, respect for and from others, a positive role model, involvement and initiative'. The Lillian Horner Memorial Prize was awarded to Miss Daisy Paddock for distinguished work as an infant teacher. Lillian Horner was a pioneer in infant teaching. She was born in May 1873 and died in February 1938. She encouraged mothers to interest themselves directly in the work of her infant grades so laid the foundations for the first Mother's Club. An annual prize of books was given to the infant teacher adjudged most worthy in a school under the Education Department, Victoria. to perpetuate her memory. In 1956 Daisy Paddock from Ringwood S.S.2997 won the prize. The books were The First Year in School by E.R. Boyce, The Merry-go-round by James Jeeves, One Little Boy by Julian Press, The Fairy Green by Rose Fyleman and Lavenders Blue,A Book of Nursery Rhymes by Kathleen Lines. The presentation case was made by former pupils who were then attending Ringwood Technical College.Wooden display case with metal plaque.
