Photograph, Ray Jude, Tulloh: last passenger train to Beech Forest, 30 June 1962
The last train ran to Beech Forest on 30 June 1962. It had a particularly motley look: 180 passengers were loaded into a series of NU goods wagons hastily fitted with temporary seats and, given the time of year, tarpaulin covers. The G42 locomotive had patched-up repairs and cannibalised G41 parts. Intending travellers faced up to the trip with some trepidation but the train made it with no problems. On this cold, gloomy day when it got back to Colac it signalled the end of narrow gauge operations in the Otway Ranges.B/W. The photo shows the Melbourne Electric Supply Co. (MESCo), bus at the East Geelong terminus. MESCo operated the Geelong tram system from 1912 and opened the tram line to this location "East Geelong" in 1923. The terminus was at the Geelong Cemetery, with a wooden waiting room shelter with signage about the building being used for passengers only and prohibiting the posting of bills. The buses ran from the railway station and Moorabool St wharf from 1912 until they were replaced by trams in 1923. The bus is also seen in item 4315. Ephemera - The Sun Newspaper Sunbeams Club Envelopes and Awards, 1943
Parry Collection ‘Sunbeams’ and ‘Corinella’ were two of the few ways an Australian kid could get some acknowledgement and a pat on the back from the big wide world from the 1930s through to the 1950s. The Corinella columns ran in the Sun Newspaper with puzzles, jokes and colouring competitions. Kath Farmer played the role of ‘Corinella’ for yonks and hosted annual ‘Corinella’ Parties for boys and girls aged 5 to 13 years for decades. Sunbeam Certificates were awarded to young readers for good puzzles, riddles, drawings or original stories or verses. The Sun Newspaper Sunbeams Club Envelopes and Awards, envelopes with Ginger Meggs effigy and warning for the postman to take care with the delivery; various certificates received in return for colouring competitions and puzzles submitted back to the Sun Newspaper. Boys classes were held each Friday night in nine various locations around Melbourne. It gave the opportunity for Junior Legatees to meet and be involved with activities they may have missed out on due to the death of their fathers. Legacy clubs ran classes for junior legatees for many years. It was part of providing for the children of their deceased comrades. Activities included basketball competitions, gymnastics, boxing, judo and swimming lessons. There were annual sports days when groups came together for friendly competition. The President in 1980 was Karl Robertson. A major issue for his year in office was the question of the extension of eligibility for membership to categories of ex-servicemen who had not served overseas or in the other areas presently defined in the Code. Document is dated 12/10/1981 as the presidential year ran from March to the following February and this was written sometime after he was replaced as president. Was in a binder of documents that is passed from an outgoing President to the incoming President. It is primarily from the 1930s to 1990s. Photo shows one of the horse trams and staff that operated the line that ran from Hawthorn Bridge via Burwood Road, Power Street, and Riversdale Road to Auburn Road, opening in 1890. There are 8 uniformed men and three officers in the photograph. In the background are many undeveloped housing blocks, and the Hawthorn Town Hall tower. The tramway operated until 1916 when it was replaced by an electric tram. Functional object - Porthole frame, ca. 1889
This porthole and porthole cover was removed from the stern of the Newfield wreck, on the starboard side. The barque Newfield left Liverpool on 1st June 1892 with a cargo of 1850 tons of fine rock salt for Brisbane. About six weeks later the ship ran into very heavy weather approaching the Australian coast. On 28th August at about 9pm her master, Captain George Scott, observed between the heavy squalls the Cape Otway light on the mainland of Victoria, but due apparently to a navigational error (the chronometers were incorrect), he mistook it for Cape Wickham on King Island, some 40 miles south. He altered course to the north expecting to run through the western entrance of Bass Strait, but instead, at about 1:30am, the ship ran aground about about 100 yards from shore, one mile east of Curdies River. The vessel struck heavily three times before grounding on an inner shoal with six feet of water in the holds. The Newfield remained upright on the reef with sails set for a considerable time as the wind slowly ripped the canvas to shreds and the sea battered the hull to pieces. Seventeen men survived the shipwreck but the captain and eight of his crew perished.Flagstaff Hill’s collection of artefacts from the Newfield is significant for its association with the shipwreck Newfield, which is listed on the Victorian Heritage Registry. The collection is significant because of the relationship between the objects. The Newfield collection is archaeologically significant as the remains of an international cargo ship. Black and white copy of original : man dressed in uniform, woman holding onto arm, dressed in short dress and hat. Narration: Lieut. D. Canning with Ms. Francy Morse on the verandah of 'Craigmore' Guest House in Myrtle St., ( Now Don St., ) Bendigo. 'Craigmore' was a guest house for men during the war years, it is now Frew Hall, a part of the new Girton College. At the time of the photo it was part of the old Girton College. The tree in the background is understood to have been planted by a visiting member of the Royal family in the late 1920's. It was one of a pair on either side of the steps up onto the verandah. The two trees were cut down several years ago go make way for developments on the site. Francy and her mother ran the boarding house for a number of years with mostly around 10 boarders. Yields information about a special tram service during March 1969 and some unusual moves.Set of four Colour slides, Kodak white cardboard mount, developed March 1969 of a special tram that apparently ran from the depot via View Point, shunted at Ripon St and again at Hospital corner. ..1 - No. 26 running a special in Wendouree Parade, View Point, with the Lake View Hotel. .2 - ditto - and a catering company in the view, as well as a Telephone box. .3 - running from Ripon St into Sturt St. .4 - shunting at Hospital corner - then possibly crossed 34 at Parker St Loop - see 7668. .5 - ditto, but before .4, with the tram rounding the corner from the North side of Sturt St into Drummond St. It would then appear that the tram then reversed a bit before going back into Sturt St onto the South side. A double deck horse drawn tram with single saloon. drop ends, stairs, longitudinal seats, sliding doors, wheels of cast iron, hand brakes - see notes. Originally built by Duncan & Fraser in 1887. Rebuilt by BTPS 1991. From the BTM Fleet page on the website: Built in 1887 by Duncan and Fraser for the Ballaarat Tramway Company Ltd. as a double-decked horse tramcar. One of eight cars which ran as trailers behind electric trams at times of heavy patronage, after takeover and conversion of the horse lines by the Electric Supply Company of Victoria Ltd. in 1905. Withdrawn in the late 1920's when the body shell became a residential outbuilding locally, until retrieved in 1985. At the beginning of the 1890s, the Kew businessman and Town Councillor, Henry Kellett, commissioned J.F.C. Farquhar to photograph scenes of Kew. These scenes included panoramas as well as pastoral scenes. The resulting set of twelve photographs was assembled in an album, Kew Where We Live, from which customers could select images for purchase.The preamble to the album describes that the photographs used the ‘argentic bromide’ process, now more commonly known as the gelatine silver process. This form of dry plate photography allowed for the negatives to be kept for weeks before processing, hence its value in landscape photography. The resulting images were considered to be finely grained and everlasting. Evidence of the success of Henry Kellett’s venture can be seen today, in that some of the photographs are held in national collections.It is believed that the Kew Historical Society’s copy of the Kellett album is unique and that the photographs in the book were the first copies taken from the original plates. It is the first and most important series of images produced about Kew. The individual images have proved essential in identifying buildings and places of heritage value in the district.A panoramic photograph of the junction of High Street and Cotham Road. The photographer centres the point-of-view on the Kew Post Office and adjacent Court House. These were designed in the Queen Anne style by the Public Works Department's architect J Harvey and completed in 1888. The complex is important because it demonstrates a departure from the contemporaneously favoured High Victorian Classical to the Queen Anne style in the design of civic buildings. The earlier Jubilee Fountain in front of the Post Office was erected by the Kew Borough Council to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1887. It was created to a design of the architects Reed, Henderson and Smart. The fountain was later relocated to the Alexandra Gardens to make way for the Kew War Memorial. The tram tracks in High Street were used by the horse tram, which ran from the Victoria Street Bridge to the Boroondara General Cemetery. The Armitstead family's first woodyard in Surrey Hills was located in Croydon Road but later they moved to 153-157 Union Road, Surrey Hills. The business delivered timber and briquettes for heating to homes in the local area but also blocks of ice in the days before refrigerators were a usual household appliance. The timber was unloaded from railway trucks at a siding at Surrey Hills station; some came from the Armitstead's property of 130 acres of timbered land near Killara. They also sold mallee roots and briquettes.A vertical file containing the following documents: 1. Elaine Mann was married to David Mann, a successful Wodonga businessman and community leader who passed away in Wodonga in June 2012. David was a member of the Mann family who began their business in Wodonga in 1920. Elaine was a teacher in Wodonga for many years and an active member of the community.This photo collection is of significance as it documents how the businesses and buildings in Wodonga have evolved and contributed to community throughout the late 20th century.S.E.C.; Wodonga Sports Store, Wodonga Delicatessen, Marks Bros. Butchery; Halls Bakery. Before Marks Brothers, the butcher Bert Wilcox Butchery. Ron and Anne Chaffey ran the Wodonga Delicatessen from 1983 to 1986 and Marks brothers owned the building. Hall’s Modern Bakery was established in 1930 and was selling Sunicrust Bread. The bakery operated for 48 years. In 1960, Bob Hall and four Albury bakers, Eric Wynne and Allan, Neville and Keith Thiel, joined Bunge’s Albury Flour Mills in forming a new company, Southern Border Bakeries. He became a director and general manager of the company. He also served 9 years in local government. Bob was also a member of the Bread Manufacturers Council of N.S.W., the Australian and New Zealand Bread Manufacturers Association, and an employers representative on the N.S.W. The Fred Rochow Railways Collection incorporates photos related to the operation of the Wodonga Railway Station including different types of trains and railways staff C. 1930 – 1990. It was donated to the Wodonga Historical Society by Fred Rochow, a railwayman who spent many years based in Wodonga. He joined the Victorian Railways on 17th June l947 and retired in 1988. For some time, he was a member of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen and served a term as a member of the Trades Hall Council. He had an extensive knowledge of the struggles that took place to achieve better conditions for railway workers. Fred worked for many years as a fireman and then worked his way up the ranks to driver, experiencing many changes from the days of steam locomotives through to diesel trains, locomotives and even the modern XPT train. He worked throughout Victoria at different stages of his career, with his final working years focused on the northeast of Victoria and the Albury to Melbourne line. After his retirement, Fred continued to share his love of steam miniature trains with the community.This collection has local and statewide significance as it captures images of trains, locomotives and personnel who operated the railway services in Wodonga and throughout Northeast Victoria. The railways played a critical role in opening up Victoria and connecting Australia for trade, business, social communication and transport.The 4 members of the crew of The Flying Scotsman in 1988, taken at the Albury Station The Flying Scotsman Pacific 4-6-2, perhaps one of the most iconic steam locomotives in the world, visited Australia in 1988-89 for a series of events associated with the country’s bicentennial celebrations. As part of the Bicentennial celebrations locomotives began to arrive in Melbourne for the AusSteam 88 exhibition from 14 October. A planned parallel run south of Seymour with NSW locomotives 3112 and 1210 and Victorian Railways J515 had to be abandoned due to late running by the NSW locomotives. A parallel run did take place on Sunday 16 October when VR R761 and NSW 3801 ran from Wodonga to Melbourne. On 25 October 1988, the Flying Scotsman worked its first passenger trip in Australia when it took a return Melbourne to Albury journey. Fred worked for many years as a fireman and then worked his way up the ranks to driver, experiencing many changes from the days of steam locomotives through to diesel trains, locomotives and even the modern XPT train. He worked throughout Victoria at different stages of his career, with his final working years focused on the northeast of Victoria and the Albury to Melbourne line. After his retirement, Fred continued to share his love of steam miniature trains with the community.This collection has local and statewide significance as it captures images of trains, locomotives and personnel who operated the railway services in Wodonga and throughout Northeast Victoria. A parallel run did take place on Sunday 16 October when VR R761 and NSW 3801 ran from Wodonga to Melbourne. On 25 October 1988, the Flying Scotsman worked its first passenger trip in Australia when it took a return Melbourne to Albury journey. Thomas Heath built this shop for his saddlery business around 1875. In 1926 after 58 years operating his saddlery in Bacchus Marsh he retired and the assets of his business were sold in a clearing sale. The building was later demolished. Apart from his services in saddlery his premises was known to be a gathering place for much discussion. Heath was known to openly express his political opinions and his saddlery premises was known by many in the community as the 'Parliament'.Small sepia unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. Housed in the album, 'Photographs of Bacchus Marsh and District in 1883 by Stevenson and McNicoll'. The photo is of a double-fronted weatherboard building with a shingle roof. The front gabled section stands directly on street level and is flanked by a picket fence. The door and overhead window and the side window with arched panels may indicate that this was the shop section, with a dwelling to the rear. The recessed side section of the building with a twelve-sectioned window, chimney and a back extension was probably the dwelling used by the family. In the doorway stands the saddler, probably Thomas Heath. To his left is a woman, possibly Mrs Heath, and a much younger woman, possibly a daughter of the Heaths. In front of the two women is a small dog. A hitching rail runs along the front of the workshop. Indicating the type of business Mr Heath ran. On the front: Stevenson & McNicoll. This formal photograph shows the crew of the HMAS Warrnambool standing in rows on the deck of the ship while it is in port. The HMAS Warrnambool J202 was commissioned by the Royal Australian Navy for use as a minesweeper during World War II. The Bathurst Class Corvette, fitted out with a range of armaments, was launched in Sydney 1941. The ship began service in Bass Strait in 1941. At the end of the year it called into its namesake city, Warrnambool, where the crew paraded for the public marching eastwards along Timor Street. A gift of books for the ship’s personnel and a plaque bearing the City of Warrnambool’s Coat of Arms were presented to the ship. The ship was involved in evacuating a family of nine from the Dutch East Indies that was later successful in its challenge of Australia’s Immigration Restriction Act (White Australia Polity). The ship had many other appointments around Australia. On 13th September 1947 HMAS Warrnambool was leading a flotilla of minesweepers in northern Queensland’s coastal waters, clearing mines previously laid to defend Australia. The ship hit a mine, which exploded and very quickly sunk the ship. Boats from the nearby ships rescued most of the seamen although one was killed at the time. The survivors were taken by the HMAS Swan II to Darwin, and they went from there to hospitals in Brisbane and Sydney. Three of these men later died from their injuries. A number of items were recovered by Navy divers in 1948 including the ship’s bell and a plaque with Warrnambool’s Coat of Arms. In 1972-75 the wreck was sold and other items were salvaged. In 1995 a memorial plaque was erected in Warrnambool near the RSL. NOTE: The RAN built a second HMAS Warrnambool FCPB204, launched in 1981 and decommissioned in 2005. There was also a steam ship SS Warrnambool built in London 1892 and broken up in 1926. [A more detailed history can be found in our Collection Record 3477.] This photograph is significant for its association with the lifesaving rescue of the crew and the sinking Royal Australian Navy vessel, HMAS Warrnambool (J202). The HMAS Warrnambool played a nationally significant role in overturning Australia’s Immigration Restriction Act 1901 (colloquially known as the White Australia policy). The ship rescued, and brought to Australia, Samuel and Annie Jacob and their family after they evacuated Dutch East India. The family was threatened with deportation and made the first successful appeal to High Court regarding that Act. The HMAS Warrnambool has - Local significance for being the namesake of the City of Warrnambool - Local significance, having docked in Warrnambool Harbour - Local significance, the crew having paraded in Timor Street, Warrnambool - State significance for its first patrol being in Bass Strait. - National significance, being present in Timor at the Japanese surrender - National significance, shown by the significance of the ship’s bell being curated as Military Heritage and Technology at the Australian War Memorial. - National significance as part of Australia’s defence force history, being one of only four Bathurst class corvettes lost while in Australian service, the only Bathurst class corvette lost after World War II, the only RAN vessel to be sunk by a mine, and associated with the last four Navy deaths of WWII Photograph of the crew of HMAS Warrnambool (I). Memorabilia, Kevin Findlay and Teddy Bear Theatre tickets
The theatre, set up in the old shire hall, was run by Bill Schooling and Connie Maugham. A World War 1 veteran, Charlie Croft, was the doorman. The films came down by ferry for Saturday nights, or Bill Schooling collected them in his car, which ran on kerosene. In the summertime, there were also screenings on Wednesdays and Fridays. Screenings started with a newsreel; then a travelogue was shown; another support film would be fitted in before interval, then another newsreel, a cartoon, and finally the feature film hit the screen. The first two photographs are of the Marlo Picture Theatre which used to be next to the general store.It was a cream coloured timber building with steps leading to a door. There are large poster type paintings on the outside walls. In about 1930, the Ozone Picture Theatre was constructed, serving as a hall and venue for entertainment. In 1925 Walter Rice built a general store in Marlo and in 1930 built the "Ozone Picture Theatre". The third photograph is of the Snowy River Store, a Budget Rite Store. Jack Unmade and his son, Brad ran the store in the 1990s and had a caravan behind the store.This is a pictorial record of a community building no longer standing.Three panoramic format coloured photographs.
