Work on paper - Music, Music Sheet Love Comes Down at Christmas, 1952
... Music Sheet Love Comes Down at Christmas... century. This sheet music is retained as an interesting piece ...The words for this song come from a Christmas song by Christina Rossetti. The poem was first published in 1885. The words have been set to music many times but the composer of this piece is James A. Steele, a well-known Australian music teacher and composer in the mid 20th century. This sheet music is retained as an interesting piece of music from the mid 20th century. As well, the owner of the music appears to have been Shirley Goldstraw, a descendant of the Goldstraw family that settled in the Naringal/Nullawarre area in the mid 19th century. This is a sheet of paper folded in two to make four pages. The pages contain the music for a song called ‘Love Came Down at Christmas’. The pages are torn at the edges with some small sections missing. The front page is stained. The inscription is handwritten in black ink. ‘S. Documents, Sheet Music Back to Warrnambool Song, 1930
... Sheet Music Back to Warrnambool Song... is outlined in red ink. Sheet Music Back to Warrnambool Song Documents ...This is the original manuscript for the song ‘Back to Warrnambool’, composed for the ‘Back To’ celebrations in Warrnambool in 1930 and reprinted for the ‘Back To’ celebrations in 1934. The song, described as a ‘souvenir foxtrot’ was written by Reginald Stoneham, a professional musician who was engaged to write the song. Reginald Stoneham (1879-1942) was a composer who was Australia’s leading exponent of jazz and ragtime piano styles in the first decades of the 20th century. He composed many tunes for anniversaries and celebrations in country towns and cities in Victoria. The original ‘Back to Warrnambool’ music was given to Henri Worland, the Town Clerk of Warrnambool in 1930 and handed over to the Warrnambool and District Historical Society by Keith Arnel, the Town Clerk in 1973. Note that the original song was ‘Respectfully dedicated to the Pioneers of Warrnambool’. This dedication, for some reason, was not printed on the music issued in the ‘Back To’ programs of either 1930 or 1934. This is a significant item as the song ‘Back to Warrnambool’ has great historical significance as it was popular in Warrnambool in the 1930s and 40s and is still played and sung occasionally today. It is one of the two local songs about Warrnambool composed by Reginald Stoneham. The other is the Warrnambool Waltz Song. It is of interest to historians and researchers to have the original music. This is the original handwritten manuscript of the song, ‘Back to Warrnambool’. There are two pages of pre-ruled music score papers, filled in on both sides of the paper. The paper is marked ‘Boomerang Brand No2’. The musical notes and the words of the song are in black ink. The name of the song is outlined in red ink. The first page has the heading ‘Souvenir Foxtrot Song, Back to Warrnambool, Words and Music composed by Reginald Stoneham, 1930, Respectfully dedicated to the Pioneers of Warrnambool’. The last page has the signature of Reginald Stoneham. The first page has the signature of Henri Worland. warrnambool, reginald stoneham, back to warrnambool -

Leisure object - Sheet music, Beautiful blue violets, c. 1864
... Sheet music... on the first page. Beautiful blue violets Leisure object Sheet music ...This piece of music was composed by Joseph Summers (1839-1917). The date of the composition is between 1863 and 1866. The brother of Charles Summers, the sculptor, Joseph Summers was born in England and came to Australia in 1865. He was an organist and composer, an Inspector of Music in schools and in charge of music examinations conducted through Trinity College, London. In 1897 he moved to Perth. The signature of ‘Miss Jessie Webster’ presents a problem as no information has been found on this person. This is a most significant item because of the date, 1866, and the name, ‘Jessie Webster’. But it is not known if the music has any local provenance. The item also has social significance as an example of the type of music played in mid-Victorian drawing rooms. This is a piece of music of four printed pages of musical notation. The cover of this music is missing. The paper is white with black printing and all the pages are much mottled and stained. The edges of the pages are ragged and torn. There is some pencil scribble on the first page. A name and a date are written in black ink on the first page. ‘Miys (Miss) Jessie Webster, November 13th 1866’jessie webster, joseph summers, warrnambool -

Leisure object - Sheet Music, In My Garden, 1929
... Sheet Music... Idabelle fireston In my garden music sheet musicin my garden Front ...This is a piece of music composed by Idabelle Firestone (1875-1954), an American composer and songwriter. She was born in Michigan and wrote many popular songs including, ‘Melody of Love’, ‘Bluebirds’ and ‘You are the Song in my Heart’. She was married to Harvey Firestone of the Firestone Tyre Company. This company sponsored the long-running radio and T.V. program called ‘The Voice of Firestone’ which had a 46 piece orchestra and aired classical and popular songs of the day. Richard Crooks (1900-1972), who sang and recorded this song, was a well-known American tenor who specialized in French and Italian opera and was associated with the New York Metropolitan Opera Company for many years. He was the host of ‘The Voice of Firestone’ from 1928 to 1945 and sang patriotic songs and popular hits etc. This copy of ‘In My Garden’ was sold at the shop of Miss H. M. Lindsay of 101 Liebig Street, Warrnambool. This shop is known to have operated in the late 1920s up to 1935 and was at first (in the 1920s) located at 180 Timor Street. This item is of some significance as an example of the type of music popular in the 1930s and an example of the work of Idabelle Firestone. It also has local significance as it was sold by a Warrnambool music store. This is a four page piece of music printed on seven sides (cover and five pages of music). The pages are cream-coloured, discoloured in places, with black printed musical notation and a back page printed in black containing advertisements for three other songs. Leisure object - Sheet music, On the road to victory, 1941
... Sheet music.... On the road to victory Leisure object Sheet music ...This piece of music has been produced during World War Two (1941) as a propaganda and fund-raising piece for the people of Alexandria in Egypt. It has both Greek and British backing with the headings on the cover in both languages. The music is a march and the title suggests that victory is on the way so the emotions are being stirred to keep up the morale. Egypt in World War Two was still under British influence and Alexandria is a port in Egypt at the mouth of the Nile River. In 1941 British battleships were based in the Alexandria harbor and two of them were disabled by Italian Navy divers. Hence it is not clear why it was the Hellenic (Greek) Red Cross raising funds for Alexandria through the sale of this music which was produced in that city by the Moharrem Press (founded 1938) and composed by Lena Bonfiliou, probably a Greek person. It is not known if this piece of music was bought in Australia or brought back to Australia by an Australian military person during World War Two.This is an interesting piece of music. Its connection to Warrnambool is not known but it is an example of the type of music produced during World War Two to help the war effort. This is a four page piece of music, ‘On the Road to Victory’ (a march) with a front cover, a blank end page and two pages of musical notation. The latter pages have black printing on white pages. The front cover has both Greek and English printing and a colour image of four British and Greek flags resting on a gun carriage with armaments underneath and indications of an explosion. There is a red stamp on the cover (Hellenic Red Cross). The pages are in good condition. Functional object - Spirit Level
... a piece of sheet music which includes the handwriting ‘Mrs ...This item was given to the Historical Society in 1972, with the donor indicating that the spirit level belonged to the Henty family. The Hentys of Portland are regarded as the first permanent settlers in the State of Victoria (1834). Stephen Henty, with his brother Edward, was involved in the whaling industry in Portland. He also had shipping interests, operating a regular Western District shipping service (‘Champion’, ‘Lady Bird’, ‘Western’, ‘Edina’ etc) and a property ‘Cadnook’, near Harrow. Stephen Henty had close connections with Warrnambool not only because of his shipping interests but also because he was the brother-in-law of an early Warrnambool Harbour Master, Captain Frank Helpman. A spirit level was an essential tool for early settlers as they often built their own homes and constructed the roads nearby, needing to ascertain if what was being constructed was on level ground. It does not seem possible to establish whether this item belonged to the Henty family or to a Henty property. But in the Historical Society collection we have a piece of sheet music which includes the handwriting ‘Mrs Smalpaige, Cadnook’, ‘S. J. Henty’ and the date ‘8th August 1859’. Also the Warrnambool Art Gallery has an authentic Henty piano dating from 1837 and Stephen Henty’s wife died in Hamilton in 1906 so it is possible that the spirit level came to us from a Henty family descendant living nearby via Mr N. Kelly. If the Henty provenance can be proved then this item is of high significance. This is an unvarnished wooden spirit level, apparently home made, with a bubble in the centre. The top has been attached with eight screws, now much rusted. There appears to be some letters in the bubble area but they have not been deciphered “Hentys spirit level, oldest in Australia” is written in ink on the back of the objectspirit level, henty brothers portland, warrnambool, henty family -

... sheet music... body happy banjo entertainment music sheet music A spiral bound ...Monica Miller was a greatly loved music lecturer at the Ballarat Teachers' College lecturer Monica Miller. The Ballarat Teachers' College was established after the Victorian State Government and the State Education Department decided to establish two provincial teachers' colleges, at Ballarat and Bendigo. On 04 May 1926 W.H. Ellwood (Principal), Miss A. Bouchier, and Mr A.B. Jones, welcomed the first enrolment of 61 students to undertake the one year course. In 1927 the College moved to the former Ballarat East Town Hall in Barkly Street, which was remodelled for their use. It closed in December 1931 due to the Great Depression. In 1946 Ballarat Teachers' College reopened and relocated to the Dana Street State School. It was originally planned to open as a women's college, for whom the residence at 130 Victoria Street was purchased, but the decision was made to admit resident men from Ballarat. Mr T.W. Turner was appointed as Principal in 1951 and directed the introduction of a two year course for the Trained Primary Teachers' Certificate. The former one year course was terminated at the end of 1951. In 1958 the College was relocated to a custom built facility at Gillies Street, in close proximity to the Ballarat Botanical Gardens. Numbers increased with the introduction of the Trained Infant Teachers' Certificate course under the guidance of Mary Egan. With the introduction of a three year Diploma Course in 1968 accommodation became cramped. The introduction of the Diploma of Teaching (Primary) led to the Trained Infant Teachers' Certificate being discontinued in 1969, and the end of the Trained Primary Teachers' Certificate in 1969. Secondary Art and Craft students began studies at Ballarat Teachers' College in 1969 under Mr Ted Doney. In 1971 Mr D. Watson was appointed Principal. The State College of Victoria was proclaimed by Order in Council on 24 July 1973, and Ballarat Teachers' College became a constituent college of the State College of Victoria, and was known as State College of Victoria, Ballarat. By 1975 the College moved to Mount Helen as part of the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. Pre service teachers currently undertake their studies on the Mount Helen Campus of Federation University.
