Copied by Ken Hall from an early postcard. This is Surrey Hills Reservoir No 1 on the corner of Tower Street built in c1892 at a cost of £12,000 to supply higher sections of the area. The builders were Jack and Bob Laudehr, partners in a wood yard in St. Kilda (Vic). They began by delivering firewood but extended to contract work involving timber. Another of their projects was to lay cable tram tracks commencing in Acland Street St. Kilda and running along The Esplanade. The reservoir in Canterbury Road was a large concrete structure built before the introduction of reinforcements. The excavated material was banked against the sides and pine trees were planted in it to add strength to the embankment. They were paid £2,000 for their work. Construction of Surrey Hills Number 2 Reservoir was completed in 1913 and the accompanying tower was built in 1929. It is assumed that the Miss Hill as the source of the donation (via Bill Dempsey) was Ivy Annie Hill (1902-1984). She was the only female child of William Valentine Dempsey to not marry. Bill Dempsey's mother was Laura Constance 'Birdie' Hill (1900-1968) who married Albert Dempsey.A sepia photograph within a post card of a reservoir on Canterbury Road, Surrey Hills. The photograph shows the view of the shore and Lady Bay with the Breakwater and Middle Island all visible. It was taken to show that the Flagstaff Hill area was unlikely to have any further development between it and the Bay, with the view of development of the Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village. This photograph, a print, is one of a set of five that show the site of Flagstaff Hill. The photographer was John Lindsay, Founding Director of Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village, with the words "Photo J Lindsay" on the back. It was taken in the early 1970s during the initial stages of the development of Flagstaff Hill as a Museum and Maritime Village. The photographs belonged to the donor's grandparents, who lived in the Warrnambool district of Allansford/Naringal. The photograph is a record of the site and surrounds of Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village before its development and opening in 1975. It shows the Surfside Holiday Park, Surf Lifesaving Club, and the Breakwater. The photograph is significant for recording the location and condition of the Lower Lighthouse on the Hill.Coloured photograph, glassy print, one of a set of five. Set of four black and white postcards printed onto a one sided colour textured stock and contained within a folded white glossy paper envelope. The white envelope has the title "Ballarat Trams A Pictorial History in Four Post Cards" and a horse tram printed on it - made from heavy one sided paste board. The postcards consist of 1. Horse tram arriving at Grenville St with person stepping off - same image as Reg. Item No. 1539, 3898 2. ESCo tram soon after opening - c1905/1906 - has Gardens destination sign. 3 ESCo Sebastopol tram at the time of construction - with a "Suttons for Gramophones" roof advertisement and lettered "Ballarat Tramways". 4. Recovered by the donor, with approval of the Depot Foreman, from the wreckage in the SEC Ballarat yard from the demolished Tram No. 20 that was involved in a collision on 16/9/1970. One of the support members, near the bell striker has been broken through and the area where it was secured to the roof of the tram at the same end has been bent.
