The photograph shows the busy intersection of Flinders and Swanston St with Flinders St station, along with cable trams, motor vehicles, and pedestrians. The sign above the station entrance is advertising the "Australian War Museum" at the Exhibition Buildings. The reference dates its opening as ANZAC day 1922 and moving to Sydney in 1925. The photo was probably taken soon after it opened as the sign above the station entrance was regularly changed. Note the Safety Zone sign on the eastern side of the intersection for eastbound trams. Pressed metal plate with corners trimmed, top section partly folded with two slotted holes, sides folded to give strengthening to the plate, painted with a white background and the letter "M" and numbers "40" painted in red, to give a Run Number Plate for Malvern Depot No. 40. Painted with the same detail on either side of the plate. Used by Malvern Depot until they were phased out and replaced with the Automatic Vehicle Monitoring system c1990. One of a pair of posed photographs of Car 7 in Corio Tce. prior to opening day. The tramline curves to the right into the depot whose entrance lies between Blakiston & Co on the right and the MESCo's offices on the corner of Yarra St., to the left. Note its ornamental turret, removed in the 20s. The carefully arranged poseurs are employees of the Company, recognisable from the other photographs. The second photograph (Item No. 8617 - large print on wall in board room) shows the opposite end of the tram with the Geelong Club and Mac's Hotel in the background. The same characters are aboard, differently arranged. Early 1912.
