Newspaper Clipping - set of three clippings adhered to both sides of a sheet of ruled quarto paper with punched holes on the left hand side - various newspapers. .1 - "Tram Lines" - full page - from Melbourne University newspaper - Farrago - Friday April 11 -1969 - Titled "Tram Lines" with a photograph and story of MMTB Driver Cyril Tucker, Kew Depot, written by John Steed. Cyril joined the MMTB in 1922. Gives Cyril's thoughts on being a Trammie, notes the issue of the "scabs" - Tom Pesteranovich and Brooker (see Reg Item 2561). Has two photos and a cartoon sketch of the front of a tram. .2 - "Let's get rid of trams" - Letter to the Herald 11/4/1969 - written by David Crowther - Beaumaris - about trams cluttering the streets - got rid of even in Brisbane. Has a photograph of a tram stuck in traffic in Toorak Road. .3 - "Brisbane Trams Farewell" - Herald - 14/4/`969 - notes closure of Brisbane tram system. Photograph of Victorian Railways built tram No. 53 which was sold to the MMTB following closure of the St Kilda - Brighton Beach line in 1959. Modified by the MMTB, as VR class tram No. 53 and generally used on the Moonee Ponds to Footscray route 82. Black and white photograph of 2 trams in Swanston St c1925. Building in background may be the Queen Victoria hospital which places the trams just north of Lonsdale St. Photo has imperfection in top left corner of the image. First tram No. 171 is an S class single-truck California combination tram built by MMTB at Coburg Depot. It entered service in June 1922 and was withdrawn from service and sold in 1953. The tram's destination is shown as "Coburg Cemetery". Several passengers are seen boarding the tram. See page 64 of Destination City 5th Edition for another photo of this tram at South Melbourne Depot. The second tram, 178, is a T class single-truck combination tram with a long saloon, built by Duncan & Fraser, Adelaide for the MBCTT. It entered service in June 1917 as tram number 14C before transfer to the MMTB as T class tram. It was withdrawn from service and sold in 1961. This tram was one of only 6 Melbourne trams fitted with long wheelbase Brill Radiax truck. Book titled "Melbourne's Tramways in 1974" written by David R. Keenan. Details the operation of the Melbourne Tramway system prior to the introduction of the then new Z class trams, in the final decade of the MMTB, its operations, track, training, management, power supplies, tickets and other operational systems. Includes notes on services, tramcar fleet allocation, depots, fare sections and running times. Has introduction by author looking at Melbourne compared to other tramway systems around the world at the time and acknowledgements. Two copies held. Set of three coat buttons: 1 - Small Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust - PMTT - made by Stokes and Sons Melbourne - approx. 20mm dia. The badge backing piece is brass. 2 - Large PMTT - heavily worn - made by Stokes and Sons Melbourne - approx. 26mm dia - missing lug. 3 - MMTB button or Badge - damaged - made by Buttons of Birmingham UK - approx. 25mm dia. Each button has a backing piece on rear with a lug (except for 2) for sewing onto a jacket and have name of manufacturer stamped on rear part. Photograph of MMTB Track cleaner - dust vacuum car No 6 at Preston Workshops. Reference page 76 of Destination City says the tram was built in 1915 by the Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust as a general works car and rail flusher and further modified by the MMTB adding the vacuum equipment to try to control dust. Became known as No. 6 in 1934. Was out of use from the early 1940s and scrapped in 1948.
