The Braybrook Junction railway station was opened on 7th September 1885 at the junction of the railway lines to Ballarat and to Bendigo. In 1904 H. V. McKay purchased the Braybrook Implement Works nearby, and in 1906 he moved his Sunshine Harvester Works agricultural machinery business from Ballarat to Braybrook Junction. In 1907 the station and township were renamed Sunshine after the Sunshine Harvester Works. On 20 April 1908 (Easter Monday), Sunshine station was the scene of the biggest train disaster in Victoria, when 44 people were killed and 400 injured from the 1100 people that were aboard the two trains. A Melbourne bound train from Bendigo collided with the rear of a train from Ballarat. There is a memorial plaque on platform 1 at the present Sunshine station. Sunshine station has recently been undergoing a complete rebuild. On 20 January 2014 the station, although not yet completed, was opened for train use, after being closed for several weeks.This photograph is significant because it is a reminder that the present Sunshine station and the nearby area were once named Braybrook Junction. Fourteen Miniature Models of Nurses from Primitive Era to 1980's. They were Dean Nancy Long's idea and she had them made. They were used for "Careers" information when visiting High Schools. In 1972 when the uniforms changed from traditional to more modern trend they created interest for prospective trainee nurses. Primitive Woman - First nurse was the mother - probably a "matriarchal" head of the family. Men were the hunters and absent for long periods. Women grew seeds for food and likely first medicines. Infectious diseases depleted numbers and the sick were regarded as occurring through witchcraft. Miniature Doll Hygeia - The ancient Greeks, Egyptians, Romans believed gods directed physical welfare. Temples were built for priests - physicians. In Greece temples remains of "Asklepios" provided hostels, hospital wards, bath houses, gymnasia. Hygeia symbolized health and panacea. Hippocrates born in 460BC was a great physician and held ideals of ethical conduct and practice. Abbess- Nuns were permitted to travel and wore apparel reflecting fashion of the era. This brought criticism which led to uniformity. The veil symbolizes obedience humility and service. St John Ambulance Brigade in 1099 the Order of St John of Jerusalem began. Both men and women nursed on a large scale. Both the Knights and Ladies were pledged to the service on mankind. Sisters of Charity St Vincent de Paul. In 1638 St Vincents de Paul and Mademoiselle de Gras taught simple nursing procedure to young peasant women. They worked in the home hospital and battlefield. Their duties were arduous no pain relief was known and they were exposed to infection. In the 20 century the sisters of St Vincents De Paul are working worldwide nursing teaching caring for orphans the aged lepers. Mrs Sairey Gamp - English Monasteries declined in 1405 the Chruch was said to have one third of English's wealth. Henry VIII dissolved the Monasteries despite their record of charitable and medical work and took over most of their property. This left large numbers of helpless sick and poor to die. For the next 300 years there was no nursing class "hospitals" were overcrowded (sometimes 6 people to a bed) and were dirty. Nursing was carried out by women of low character and morals. Florence Nightingale said to be the founder of modern nursing. She became a legend in her lifetime due to her achievements. Before the Crimean war there was no professional burses. Edith Cavell trained in London and became head of nursing in Brussels. When WW1 broke out she tended wounded soldiers of both sides with equal devotion but she was charged by the germans with helping allied soldiers escape to neutral territory. Northern District School of Nursing commenced in 1950. During the early years of the School, student nurse wore a simnple blue dress with white shank buttons. This uniform was worn from School 1 (22/3/1950) thought to School 7 (24/4/1951). In 1972 Designed Noeline King designed a new uniform for the Northern District School of Nursing. Yellow and White dress with a yellow jacket. 1st worn by School 80 (31/07/1972) Students nurses wore this distinctive uniform in wards and were affectionately known as "Yellow Canaries"The Uniform was worn to the forced school closure in July 1989 as a result of transfer of nursing education into Colleges of Advanced Education.
