A fleet of transport ships was leased by the Commonwealth Government for the purpose of transporting various AIF formations to their respective overseas destinations. When not committed to military transport the ships were used for other duties. HMAT A54e Runic was one of these ships.The HMAT Runic weighed 12,480 tons and was owned by the Oceanic SN Co Ltd. Liverpool. The HMAT Runic was leased by the Commonwealth Government until 27 November 1917. On arrival Pte Smith was take on strength to Pioneer Training Battalion and was then transferred to 5 Pioneer Battalion. VX46562 N J Richmond enlisted in 2AIF on 12 July 1940 and discharged on 04 December 1945, he was Posted to 2/9 Field Ambulance. After December Leave in this Unit left Australia on 3 February 1941 and arrived in Singapore on the 18 February 1941. On 10 April 1942 VX46562 N J Richmond was reported Missing and on 02 November 1943 was Listed at POW. XV46562 N J Richmond returned to Australia on 15 October 1945. The family of 826 Harry James Britter have collected paper clippings, cablegrams, greeting cards relating to the Service of H J Britter, who enlisted into the AIF on 12 July 1915, he was posted to 31 Battalion. In WW1 this Battalion initially went to Egypt, the Battalion consisted of two companies from Queensland and two companies from Victoria.
