This is a Latin text book for pupils studying for the Matriculation examinations in 1899 and 1900. It was used by Lizzie Stanley at the convent school in Warrnambool This school was established in 1872 and was at first known as the Convent of Mercy, Wyton and, after 1888, St. Ann’s Convent School. In 1991 it merged with the Warrrnambool Christian Brothers’ College to become Emmanuel College. Lizzie Stanley is believed to be Elizabeth Stanley, born in 1883 with her parents John Shaw and Marie Stanley. Her father, a writer, mathematician and chess player, was well-known in Warrnambool as the founder and Head Master of Warrnambool Grammar School (1879-1900). This text book has at some stage been in the collection of the Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute Library. The Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute and Subscription Library were established in Warrnambool in 1854 and a Free Library was operating in the Mechanics’ Institute building from the 1870s on. The Mechanics’ Institute building was demolished in 1975 and the library collection was housed in the new library opened in 1976. In 2006 the old Mechanics’ Institute library was re-housed at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum, Warrnambool and it is not known exactly when this text book was removed from the collection. This book is of considerable interest as it has connections to Warrnambool student, Lizzie Stanley, the Warrnambool Convent school and the Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute Library.This is a hard cover book of 162 pages. It has a blue cover with black lettering. There are two library labels pasted in, one at the front and one at the back and a library sticker on the spine. The inscription is handwritten in black ink and there are also some notes written at the back in pencil. This 1901 history of the Boer War is written from the British perspective and the writing is so emotionally-charged that it reads like a story from a Boys Only Annual. The owner was James Fidler, presumably the eldest son of Thomas and Fanny Fidler who arrived in Melbourne in 1849. They lived on a property called Grange in Panmure with the homestead called Maida Hill. Thomas Fidler owned butchers’ shops in Warrnambool and Panmure. James Fidler was born in 1850 and died in 1929. This book is of interest because it was owned by James Fidler whose family was a prominent one in Warrnambool and Panmure in the 19th century. The book is also useful for researching the Boer War, a conflict in which many Warrnambool and district men took an active part. This is a hard cover book of 1554 pages. There are several pages at the end listing other books published by Cassell and Company. There are 127 chapters and an index. There are many black and white illustrations and several full-page colour plates. This book has the stamp of G.G. Humm and was presumably owned by him. George Gordon Humm (1886-1959) was the son of Elizabeth and George Humm. He was a grocer in Warrnambool. His father came to Woodford with his first wife in 1860 and set up as a butcher. He entered the hotel business and was at one time the licensee of the Criterion Hotel in Warrnambool as were several members of the Humm family at a later stage. This book is of interest as it belonged to a member of the Humm family, prominent in the Warrnambool-Woodford area in both the 19th and 20th centuries, This is a hard cover book of 115 pages. At the back are several pages of lists of publications by the publishers, Gall and Inglis. The cover is dark green with black lettering on a gold background and orange, black and yellow ornamental patterns. The back page has the initials of the publishers. The cover is somewhat faded. The handwriting of the Skilbeck inscription suggests that it is of 19th century origin so the first owner of the book may have been Richard Skilbeck, a pioneer of the Koroit district who was at Yangery Grange farm from 1866 to 1916. The name on the printed label would be that of a Skilbeck descendant. This book is of antiquarian interest and is also kept because of its connection to the Skilbeck families from the Koroit area This is a hard cover book of 357 pages. It has a green cover with black and gold decorative panels and scrolls and gold lettering. The cover is somewhat stained and the spine is a little faded. The book has 33 chapters and advertisements at the back of the book for other books by the same author. There are decorative borders and scrolls at the beginning and end of each chapter. There are several black and white full-page illustrations, all protected by tissue paper. The inscription is handwritten in black ink and a piece of paper containing a printed name and address is affixed to the first page with adhesive tape. This is a travel book written by Mary Gaunt (1861-1942). She was an Australian author who gained international recognition for her novels, travel books, magazine articles and short stories. The wife of Dr H. L. Miller, she lived in Warrnambool from 1894 to 1900 and wrote some of her novels whilst in the town, using local scenes and situations for some of her writings. Her travel books are important as she wrote about her adventures in countries such as Africa and China where she was often touring places not previously visited by a white woman unaccompanied by other Europeans. This original copy of Mary Gaunt’s book about her travels in Jamaica is significant. Not only was Mary Gaunt a noted Australian writer but she was also a resident of Warrnambool for some time and thus has her place in Warrnambool’s history. This book was sent by Mary Gaunt to her brother Clive, resident in Rangoon at the time of the book’s publication. This is a hard cover book of 258 pages. The book has a dark green cover with gold lettering on the spine. The cover is very mottled and stained. There are four black and white photographs scattered throughout the text. This book was a present from James Dickson to John Glass Cramond in 1897. These two men were business partners and friends. They established the drapery, ironmongery and clothing business of Cramond and Dickson in Warrnambool in 1855 and this business remained as an important store in Warrnambool until 1973. John Cramond was Mayor of Warrnambool from 1876 to 1877 and from 1881 to 1882.This is a most significant item as it belonged to a prominent Warrnambool man and was given to him by another prominent Warrnambool citizen. The store of Cramond and Dickson was one of the best-known and most important shop in Warrnambool for nearly 120 years. This is a brown leather-bound book with a red lining on the inside cover. The book has 900 pages and was printed in 1893. The contents include an English Grammar, an English Dictionary, the population of European Capitals, a list of Cities and Towns in Britain, a list of Animal, Vegetable and Mineral productions, a list of Proverbs, a Law Dictionary, a Compendium of Modern History and the Coronets of Princes of the Blood and of the Peerage. This book belonged to the Warrnambool solicitor, Con O’Mahony (1863-1920). In 1883, he won the University of Melbourne Bowen Prize for his essay on the Federation of the Australian colonies. His prize, ten volumes of the ‘Lives of the Chancellors’, is today in the possession of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society. O’Mahony had a legal practice in Warrnambool in the Royal Chambers in Kepler Street at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. He was initially in a partnership with Messrs E.W. Klingender and Murray, then ,when this partnership was dissolved, he continued the business under the name of O’Mahony and later O’Mahony and Murray. He was actively involved in the management of the Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute and was a member of the Warrnambool Hospital committee. The item here described shows O’Mahony’s interest in bridge-playing, a popular pastime at that time. This book is of some significance as it belonged to Con O’Mahony, a well-known lawyer in Warrnambool in the early 1900s. It also shows the interest in bridge-playing as a pastime during that period. This is a small hard cover book of 112 pages. It was published in 1901(eighth edition) and contains seven chapters on how to play bridge, a scoring table and an index. The last three pages are advertisements for other books on bridge. The cover is yellow with the title of the book, the author’s name and the publisher on the front cover contained within a scroll pattern with four coloured images of the four kings from a pack of cards. The back cover has a list of the British Chess Handbooks published by George Routledge & Sons Ltd. It is commonly used as a book of inspiration and study within all Christian Churches. This particular copy was presented to James Cook in 1940 by the Hamilton Church of Christ Sunday School. This book, ‘Tom Wallis’ written by Louis Becke was awarded as a third prize to Bertie Wilson by the Grasmere Presbyterian Sabbath School in 1910. Grasmere is a small settlement about 12 kilometres from Warrnambool and was settled in the 1840s by pastoralists prior to the founding of Warrnambool. The Grasmere Presbyterian Church and Sunday School were established in 1898 though services had been held prior to this date in an older church which was converted at that time to house the Sunday School. The Sunday School was burnt down in 1914 and later rebuilt. Mr Paton, the Sunday School teacher in 1910, was on the Board of Management of the church in 1911. This book is significant because it is a memento of the Grasmere Presbyterian Sabbath School of 1910. Sunday School attendance was a strong feature of the religious, educational and social life of many children in the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. Sunday Schools still operate but have fewer children attending in relation to the numbers of Protestant churches adherents. This is a hard cover book of 320 pages plus several pages at the end detailing other books published by the Religious Tract Society. The cover is dark red with an illustration in black, red and grey colours of two sailors aboard a ship. The book was a prize given to Bertie Wilson from the Grasmere Presbyterian Sabbath School in 1910. There are several illustrations (black and white plates) inserted throughout the book. This book, ‘Angel’s Brother’ by Eleanora H. Stooke was a prize given to a pupil (name unknown) by the Christ Church Sunday School, Warrnambool in 1909. The Sunday School of the Anglican Church in Warrnambool dates from the 1850s and by 1909 it was an established tradition for most children whose parents belonged to the Anglican Church to attend a Sunday School. In 1906 there were about 30 teachers taking 45 pupils in the morning session and 177 pupils in the afternoon session. The highlights of the year were the Sunday School picnic held at various venues and the annual prizegiving day. In 1909 a cantata, ‘The Fairy Chain’ was performed by Sunday School students in the Oddfellows Hall. The Vicar in 1909 was Archdeacon Peacock (1906-1912) and in 1908 he introduced a Church Stamp System at the Sunday School whereby children were given stamps and pictures for an album to record their attendance and instruction. This book is significant because it is an example of the type of prize given to the prizewinners at the Christ Church Sunday School in Warrnambool in 1909. The prize, a book, has a story that has heavy Christian religious and moral overtones and the English Religious Tract Society produced books especially for the Sunday School prizegiving market. This is a hard cover book of 314 pages pus several pages detailing other books recently published. The book is a children’s book given as a prize by Christ Church Sunday School, Warrnambool in 1909. It has a brown cover with an inset of a sketch of a young woman holding an umbrella and a sea or a lake setting in the background. The colours of the sketch are blue, white and black and the sketch is set in a decorative border. A similar decorative pattern is on the spine of the book. There are several black and white plates in the book relating to the story. The inscription plate inside has both printed material in blue print and handwritten material in black ink. This Hymn Book was given to Margaret (Peggie) Peacock by the Christ Church Choir, Warrnambool when she left Warrnambool in 1912. She was the sister of Archdeacon Andrew Peacock, the fourth Vicar of Christ Church, Warrnambool. Their brother was Sir Alexander Peacock, at one time Premier of Victoria. Margaret Peacock kept house for her brother and assisted him in his pastoral work. Her brother died in Warrnambool in 1912 and Margaret left the town. She died in 1947.This book is of considerable importance as it belonged to a Warrnambool resident in the early 1900s. She worked as a housekeeper for her brother, Archdeacon Peacock and assisted him in his pastoral duties in the Anglican Church. The sketch in the book shows that Margaret Peacock was interested in art work and the caption, ‘Where Memory Lingers’ shows that she had fond memories of her time in Warrnambool. The book was in the possession of her sister, Mrs Uglow, the wife of a Colac physician and this lady was a friend of Gladys Angus, the wife of a well-known Warrnambool doctor, Roy Angus. Mrs Uglow gave the book to Mrs Angus’ daughter, Berry McDade and she has handed it over to the Warrnambool and District Historical Society for safe-keeping. This is a maroon-coloured leather-bound book of 514 pages of hymns (music and words) and 31 pages of additional material at the end of the book. The inside of the cover has an ornamental gilt pattern on the edges and the page ends have red gilt shading. There are four loose pages, three of them relating to the ownership and donation of the book and one is a prayer for members of the Girls’ Friendly Society. The front cover has been personalised with gold lettering with the initials of the owner and there is an inscription inside relating to the original presentation of the book to the owner, Margaret Peacock. This is in silver and black script. There is also a sketch of Christ Church, Warrnambool by Margaret (Peggie) Peacock inserted into the third page. This is a car picnic set made by the English firm of G. W. Scott and Sons who were producers of wickerwork crafts, basketry and luxury leather goods. The business was founded in 1661 and ceased operations in 1967. The picnic set belonged to Dr Horace Iles Holmes (1877-1959) who was born and educated in Tasmania and completed a medical degree at Melbourne University. He commenced a practice in Warrnambool in 1906 and was the Honorary Medical Officer at the Warrnambool Hospital and Warrnambool’s Health Officer. His practice was at ‘Ierne’ at the corner of Spence and Kepler Streets. He was an early member of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons and was prominent in Warrnambool community affairs (Foundation President of Warrnmbool Rotary Club, a member of the local Masonic Lodge for over 50 years, Warrnambool Hospital Committee member, long-term Trustee of the Warrnambool Methodist Church and President of the Lyndoch Hostel for the Aged Committee). Dr Holmes also had agricultural interests and enjoyed fishing, golf and bowls. He also had a motor car and this picnic set would have been used for family picnics. This picnic set is of considerable significance because: 1. It is a good example of the luxury picnic sets owned by more affluent people in the 1930s and 40s. 2. It has important local provenance as it belonged to Horace Holmes, a doctor associated with the professional and community life of Warrnambool for over 50 years. This is a rectangular wooden box with a leather covering. It has metal hinges on the corners of the box and two two metal catches on the side with a leather belt and metal buckle on one of these catches with one leather belt missing on the other side. These leather straps were to attach the picnic box to the running board of the car. There are also two metal catches or locks on the front of the box. Inside the box there is a white lining with a plaited wickerwork insert containing spaces for the following: 1. large china container with a silver top 2. smaller metal container with a silver lid 3. small rectangular metal tin with a silver lid. This container still has some loose tea leaves inside 4. four china cups 5. two circular china dishes for jam and butter 6. four china saucers 7. one glass bottle with a silver top 8. one metal phial, silver-coloured 9. one amber-coloured glass bottle (probably not an original) 10. four nickel silver spoons 11. three metal forks 12. three white enamel plates, blue edged Numbers 10,11 and 12 are held in place by leather straps on the inside of the lid of the box 13. two loose metal straps 14. one metal kettle with a handle with cane strapping, a brass lid, a brass spout with an end chain and a metal inscription 15. This book belonged to Robert Giles. He obtained it in 1914 and the bookseller was Mrs Tilly Rowan who was a well-known businesswoman in Warrnambool with a book shop and newsagency in the Oddfellows Hall in Koroit Street. Robert Giles (1895-1967) was born in Wangoom and went to the Wangoom State School and the Warrnambool Agricultural High School. He served in World War One and worked at the State Savings Bank in Warrnambool from 1911 to 1921 (excluding war service). He later worked in banks in Koroit, other Victorian country districts and Melbourne and retired to Mailors Flat. He was married to Vera King and they had one child, Joyce Aurelin. A Warrnambool branch of the Savings Bank was opened in Warrnambool in 1859 and it moved into a new building in Timor Street in 1885. (This building in now part of the Archie Graham Senior Citizens’ Centre). The State Savings Bank became the State Bank of Victoria in 1980 and in 1990 was subsumed into the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. This book is retained because it belonged to Robert Giles who lived in the Warrnambool area for part of his life and who worked at the State Savings Bank in Warrnambool early in the 20th century. This is a hard cover book of 408 pages. The cover is red with a gold-coloured image of a horse and a mounted policeman on the front cover and gold printing on the spine. The book has 25 chapters of text. Two labels of the book’s seller are affixed to the front cover and a title page. The cover is much scuffed.‘July 9th 1914 Robert P. This book has been in two Warrnambool lending libraries. It has been borrowed by subscription holders from 1938 to 1950. The book was first in Hudson’s Hygienic Library at 71 Liebig Street Warrnambool. A.R.Hudson had a bookshop and newsagency at the same address. Subscribers to the library paid two shillings and sixpence to join the library and then threepence a week for borrowing the book. The library was open to 9 p.m. and was advertised as ‘The most up-to-date library in the Western District.’ ‘Hygienic’ libraries were a feature of privately-operated libraries in Australia, mostly in the 1930s, 40s and 50s. The increased interest in germ prevention and health improvement led to the ‘hygienic’ practice of sterilising the books after each borrowing. It appears that the books were wiped with formaldehyde. Following Hudson’s ownership of this book, it was in Stronach’s Library at 105B Liebig Street. There have been examples of private subscription libraries in Warrnambool since the 1860s (plus the subscription library available at the Mechanics’ Institute). After 1950, with the increase in the funding and building of public libraries, subscription libraries for the general public largely disappeared. This book is of interest as an example of the books that could be borrowed from a private subscription library in Warrnambool in the early to mid 20th centuries. This is a hard cover book of 247 pages. The cover is red and yellow with an illustration of a racing car on the front and black printing on the front and back. The spine has been reinforced with black tape which is now peeling off. The inside front cover and the back cover have stickers from lending libraries. Inside the back cover are a series of stamps. This book belonged to Charles Rogers. Captain Charles Rogers was an Australian Army officer in the 4th Lighthorse Regiment. He was part of the mounted Guard of Honour during the visit of the Duke of Gloucester in 1934. The visit was part of Victoria’s centenary celebrations and the duke officially opened the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance. Charles Rogers was well-known as a Warrnambool resident in the 1930s, 40s and 50s and was often seen on horseback leading parade and celebrations in the city. He as a long-serving Warrnambool Agricultural Show official as a judge of equine events. He died in 1961. This book is of interest, firstly as an example of a military handbook for cavalry officers and secondly because it belonged to Captain Charles Rogers, an army officer (Lighthorse regiment) who was a well-known resident of Warrnambool in the early to mid 20th century. This is a hard cover book of 198 pages. It has a yellow cover with black printing on the spine. Most of the pages are white, with several pink pages at the beginning and the end.
