Wooden crosses were installed in the grass verge of the Shrine in 1995 to mark the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II. It was called the Field of Remembrance. These photos show some of the crosses, and with The Shrine in the background. The Field of Remembrance was publicised in editions of the Answer and featured on the cover of the October 1995 edition. The field of crosses was part of "Australia Remembers 1945 -1995". Crosses were available without charge (but by donation) at kiosk near the Shrine and names and unit numbers could be added and the cross placed in the Shrine grounds. The crosses were later gathered and burnt with the ashes being scattered on 11th November 1995. In the April 1997 edition of The Answer a poem was published that was written about the crosses. Melbourne Legacy ran an excellent exercise program for its widows for many years at Legacy House. Similar to photos 00619 and 00620 which show exercise classes in 2004, although this is another day. A 'Lone Pine' was planted at Caulfield Racecourse in 1995 to mark the 50th Anniversary of the end of World War II - as part of 'Australia Remembers'. This photo of Vice President Lucky Luscombe laying a wreath of remembrance at the tree was taken in 1996 when many Legacy widows, Legatees, and friends of Legacy participated in the Commemorative Race Day at Caulfield on Sunday 25th August 1996, marking the 75th Anniversary of the RAAF. The photo was featured with others in the October 1996 issue of The Answer - titled "Legacy goes 'Back to Caulfield' for Veterans' Race Day". According to the article published in The Answer in August 1995 these ladies were meeting for a Widows' Club Seminar at Legacy House on 8th may 1995. The article says "On that day representative from Widows Clubs and groups from throughout Victoria are together for a seminar - guest speakers covered a wide-ranging agenda. From an article in The Answer newsletter December 1995 edition there was a Remembrance tour to Canberra for widows in 1995. 1995 was the 50th Anniversary of the end of World War II and there were remembrance events all over Australia as part of 'Australia Remembers'. The ladies are standing at the Changi War Memorial, Duntroon. The article says: "On 5th August, 32 members of various Legacy Clubs journeyed to Canberra on a 4 day Remembrance Tour. A wonderful time was had by all. The whole tour was wonderfully organised. We got off to a very cold and wet start, even to snow on the way, but by the time we reached our Motel the sun was out and it remained out all the time were were there. The highlights of my trip personally were Duntroon, The War Museum and Parliament House. It was great to met all the other Club Members and to establish friendships. A special luncheon was held for World War 1 widows as a lead up to "Legacy Week". Legatees dressed up as French waiters to add a bit of humour to the day. Due to its success it was held for a number of years. Legatee waiters included George Woodward and Eddie Jowett. There was singing as entertainment, Eddie Jowett helped with the singing. It is assumed to be 1998 as Tom Butcher appears to be the President talking to the ladies (in 00933.5). President Geoff Webb presented a plaque to the Victoria Barracks Melbourne Corps of Guides in acknowledgement of the contribution of the proceeds of the Victoria Barracks Public Tours donations over the past three year, a total of $11,000 to Legacy in that time. A portion of these proceeds was designated to be used for maintenance work on the Legacy statue of the Widow and her Children in the Garden of Appreciation at the Shrine of Remembrance. More than 1,500 people visit Victoria Barracks Melbourne (VBM) each year as part of the Public Tours program conducted by the VBM Corps of Guides. Guided tours of the Barracks in 2005 operated on Wednesdays and Sunday afternoons as required. The article in The Answer in April 1997 announced that Daryl Somers would be the personality of the year for the Badge Appeal for the second year. He was photographed speaking at Legacy House and with people including Hazel McKean. Hazel was the wife of a VC winner. Also in the photos are Elaine Ward and Lynne Scott who's family had been used to promote Legacy in a 1994. The article mentions the importance of widows helping raise funds by selling a "Card Pack" a small packet of badges which they sell to family and friends. A church service for Legacy widows at St Patrick's Cathedral in Melbourne. This is an annual event for Legacy widows at the start of Legacy Week, which is the first week in September. The church used for the service varies. The service is followed by a pilgrimage to the Shrine for another service and also a social lunch for the widows. For many years Legacy had a "Back to Caulfield Race Day" for Legatees, widows and their families. In 1995 a Legacy 'Lone Pine' was planted. The article in the Answer says: “We were delighted with the many Legacy Widows, Legatees and friends of Legacy who participated in the Commemorative Race Day at Caulfield Sunday 25th August - marking the 75th anniversary of the RAAF. The VATC had a range of displays and activities including a breathtaking parachute demonstration by the Blue Eagles. It was touch and go for a while due to the weather conditions but once the Blue Eagles jumped they all reached their designated target in front of the winning post. Legacy even had a special race named after it: “The Legacy Widows Appeal Handicap”. Our thanks to the VATC for this courtesy. Hope we had a few winners! Vice President, Legatee Brian ‘Lucky’ Luscombe placed a wreath at the legacy ‘Lone Pine’ - a descendant of the Gallipoli ‘Lone Pine’ on behalf of the Legacy Family. The historic tree was presented to Caulfield last year as part of the events to mark the 1995 Australia Remembers year.” The photos show children playing mini golf as well as the Historical Re-enactment Society of Australia with old military equipment and wearing old military uniforms. The racecourse also had a vintage plane on display with military vehicles.Legacy retains a tie with Caulfield racecourse as it was once an army camp and staging post of young men going overseas to war and now it is the site of a lone pine. A black and white photo of men and boys all wearing cowboy style hats. The label implies it is the first Junior Legacy camp at Somers in 1926. Legacy was founded in 1923 so this is a very early photo. The label on the back says: "Extract from 'Legacy' by Claude Blatchford. At Christmas 1926, a camp for boys was held at Balnarring on the property of Legatee S G Savige. It is impossible to over-estimate the advantages and benefits these camps afford. An annual camp, under discipline must be regarded as conferring the very greatest benefits. The first camp in 1926 was for seven day and thirty two boys went under canvas. Seven tents were used, and tent commanders were appointed. The lads were rostered for duties and their time was otherwise taken up in swimming, fishing, shooting and cricket. Standing orders and daily routine orders were issued, and it is to the credit of the boys that the discipline was excellent." (Blatchford 1932). In the early years, Legacy organised outings to the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring close to the beach. Permanent camp buildings were built in 1930. In 1930 Lord Somers (Governor of Victoria) also started a camp at a nearby property and the area was renamed Somers.
