This document from 1987 is an estimate of the number of widows to be in the care of Legacy from 1987-1995. Both WW1 and WW2 Widows are included in the study. The projected totals show a marked decline in WW1 Widows and a marked increase in WW2 widows.The figures show a dramatic decline in WW1 widows due to ageing, and a marked increase in WW2 widows due to their husbands deaths through ageing,war related injuries. Events such as the Government House Christmas parties and Annual Demonstrations. Also a record of the classes offered to girls and boys. There are photos of Anzac Commemoration Ceremony for school students that has been held annually by Legacy in April. It helps educate and promote the observance of Anzac Day to students. Some of the photos are Junior Legatees that joined the armed forces in the second World War. Pages 7 and 8 show the visit of the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester to Legacy. They were in Australia to start his term as Governor General of Australia - until 1947. Various invitations, programmes and other mementos collected from Legacy events held during the early 1960's. These include invitations and tickets to the Annual Demonstrations of 1960 and 1961, the ANZAC eve school children's ceremony, also to the Senior Widows Club Grand concert (18 December 1961). The Senior Widows club also held a Christmas Dinner. Also a lapel tag for the Legacy Mothers Club. There are also mementos for Junior Legatees, such as tickets to attend the Christmas party at Government House and to Operation Float in 1962 and 1963. There are also tokens for ice creams and soft drinks at the events. There is a programme for the 1961 Annual Demonstration.A collection compiled to remember various events held in the early 1960s. A card given to Legatees by the Comradeship Committee in 1939. 'Dear Legatee, Another year of Legacy has passed, another year of Service has commenced. May it continue to bring you much happiness in the appreciation of a great Comradeship. Comradeship Committee, 1939. The poem on the reverse says: 'I shall pass through this world but once, Any good thing that I can do, or any kindness That I can show any human being, Let me do it now and not defer it, For I shall not pass this way again.' The notation H15 in red pen shows that it was part of the archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy. An article from 1977 about a scheme by the Education department whereby toys are donated to charities such as Legacy which was in place since 1949. Sometimes these toys and clothing were given to junior legatees at the Christmas party. The photo shows four boys from Dromana Technical School making toys in their woodworking class. They are Richard Freeman, Ray Bryant, Shane Matthews and Wayne Poulton. The article was cut from the newspaper and pasted into a scrapbook. For many years Legacy kept scrapbooks of press clippings that related to their work and publicity. A Legacy ceremony at the Shrine of Remembrance in April 1990. One of the annual "Anzac Commemoration Ceremony for Students" events, usually held just prior to ANZAC Day. The ceremony provides a valuable opportunity for students to gain an appreciation of the Anzac spirit, the significance of the Shrine and the meaning of Anzac Day. This was the 59th Annual Ceremony more photos are at 01532. As well as photos of the ceremony and a fly past of four aircraft there are photos of three widows attending. The elderly lady in white on the left is Mrs Winifred Fotheringham who is also in 00579. Due to its success it was held for a number of years. Legatee waiters included Legatees Lucky Luscombe, George Woodward, Stuart Leslie and John Stevenson (President in 1993). A humorous poem written by Legatee L F Johns about Legatee Chas Wilks (President of Melbourne Legacy in 1989). The poem was published in the Legacy Bulletin in 1989. It was collected to be part of a record of past presidents. There are several humorous poems in the album written by the same author. The poem mentions several Legatees, including Lea Ponton, Tom Nisbet, Dick Alexander, Ted Larkin, Stan Carpenter and Graham Riches. The article was part of an album of past presidents from 1965 to 1989. The folder included biographical details and obituaries, eulogies and death notices of prominent Legatees. A photo of a family of Junior Legatees in 1961. Legacy provided outings, camps and holidays for children all over Victoria. Country children would stay for two weeks in the city (often at the Legacy residences) and city children were billeted with families around Victoria. The names that accompanied this photo were: The Picone family from North Albury 1961. L-R Cheryl 14, Jenny 11, Antony 10, Leslie and Maria 9 and Alan 7. An article from the Bulletin including the text an address by Legatee Kem Kemsley at a Legacy event on 27 September 1983. He discusses the beginnings of Legacy. He relates the approach made to Sir John Monash to be the first president. It was via Legatee Frank Meldrum who was playing tennis with Monash's son-in-law. It shows the nature of relations between high ranking ex servicemen. Monash suggested Colonel Harold Cohen. Initially Legacy was founded with 'one person from each profession or business who will represent that profession until such time as the Club has established itself on a wider basis.' For example there were 'two solicitors - Downing and Armstrong, Meldrum as dentist, George Worboys as plumber, Dr Gardener as the eye specialist, Doolan and Goodchild as Surveyors, Fred Wickham of the Premier's department who was regarded as very important, Baker from Myer's Emporium, Joynt from the printing world and Blackett the architect.' He also mentions a Police Strike and General Monash set up a special constabulary force. Cohen, Kemsley and many of the early legatees answered the call to help keep peace. By December 1923 there were 54 members of the new Legacy club. The name was under consideration as the Tasmanian club was called Remembrance Club. Pip Powell nominated the name of Legacy to be submitted for consideration, but it was Frank Selleck who moved the formal resolution. By the end of 1924 initial objectives were met. A picnic with widows and children was held at Heidelberg and then Beaumaris, (limited by the few legatees who had motorcars at the time). Following thoses successes Frank Doolan posed the question 'what does Legacy really mean?' and focus changed toward widows and children. Legatee Savige had a property at Balnarring and the first camps were started. For boys there was a Lacrosse team and football team. Also swimming classes and literary and debating classes, which were hoped to be interesting and develop their minds along the proper form of citizenship. Then classes for the widows and later the girls. The article was part of an album of past presidents from 1965 to 1989. The folder included biographical details and obituaries, eulogies and death notices of prominent Legatees. Operation Float was an event run by Melbourne Legacy to take Junior legatees on an outing. It could have been to naval boats such as HMAS Cerberus or to a Yacht club. It gave the junior legatees the opportunity to see a naval boat in action or try sailing.
