A group of widows at Legacy House preparing trays of rosemary to be given to the public and worn as a sign of remembrance on Anzac Day. This photo appeared in the June 1997 edition of The Answer. The caption said: "Legacy Ladies making the thousands of rosemary sprigs for the ANZAC Student's Service and ANZAC Parade marchers". The lady in purple is Inez Bruce, the other names unknown. In The Answer in 1995 an articles says: "Operation Rosemary. Since 1982 Legacy ladies have volunteered to make rosemary sprigs for the Anzac Day marchers. At a later date they also made sprigs for the Schools Shrine Service. . . don't worry, there are ladies here to show you how to make them and it's a chance to hav a chat and cuppa whilst you work together. A circular sent to Victorian schools informing them about the annual "Anzac Commemoration Ceremony for Students", held in April each year. The ceremony provides a valuable opportunity for students to gain an appreciation of the Anzac spirit, the significance of the Shrine and the meaning of Anzac Day. The 6 pages outline the order of service of the ceremony, some background notes on the ANZAC Commemorations, a short history of the Shrine of Remembrance, a story of Legacy and a letter from the President of Melbourne Legacy. It mentions the ceremony is telecast on the ABC television channels. The programme is labeled a 'Circular to Victorian Colleges and Schools' so they were sent to school to publicise the events. There is a letter to the school Principal from the President of Legacy inviting the schools to attend or to listen to the telecast. In the report on the work of Legacy in 1953 (see item 01491) it was mentioned that the education of Legatees was seen as something that needed to be addressed and a formal induction process with proper training would be necessary. A two page report was included as attachment 'C'. This is the report. It mentions the Board of Management decided to inaugurate a course of classes, over six Monday evenings. The topics covered: 1) The structure of Legacy and the nature of contact work. 2) Welfare Committee and Welfare assistance available from statutory sources. 3) Education and Employment Committee 4) Residences, Housing and Accommodation, Camp and Holidays Committees. 5) The Medical, Dental, Boys' and Girls' Group Committees. 6) Personnel and Comradeship. The notation H20 in red pen shows that it was part of the archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy. A Legacy ceremony at the Shrine of Remembrance on 11 April 1990, the guest speaker was Commodore Jim Dickson. One of the annual "Anzac Commemoration Ceremony for Students" events, usually held just prior to ANZAC Day. The ceremony provides a valuable opportunity for students to gain an appreciation of the Anzac spirit, the significance of the Shrine and the meaning of Anzac Day. As well as photos of the ceremony and a fly past of four aircraft there are photos of three widows attending. The elderly lady in white on the left is Mrs Winifred Fotheringham who is also in 00579. She helped launch the 1990 Legacy week as she had reached 101 years of age (see 01045). This was the 59th Annual Commemoration service for school students. Photos were taken by Susie Howard who was publicity officer for Legacy at the time. The printed funeral service for Lt Colonel Donovan Joynt held on 12 May 1986 at St Mary's Anglican Church, Glen Eira Road, Caulfield. (Part of a photo album page(Cat.No. 01588) about the life of L/ Donovan Joynt). The Legacy Service was delivered by the President of Melbourne Legacy, Legatee R.N. Wheeler, and Legatee K.D. Green, Chairman of the Legacy Co-ordinating Council delivered an address. Brigadier B. Wade, Commander, 3rd Military District read Psalm 90 (Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations. Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.). Joynt was buried in Brighton General Cemetery with full military honours. Final pages of photo album (Cat. No. 01588) about the life of L/ Donovan Joynt VC. The typed pages are an address given by Legatee Fred Holdsworth at the Comradeship Hour, Legacy House on Tuesday 24 October 1989, after L/ Joynt's death. It was also printed in the Melbourne Legacy Bulletin (Cat.Nos. 01599, 01599(2), 01599(5). It includes the citation of the VC awarded to Joynt in the first world war. The photos are of an event held at Legacy house with L/ Joynt uniform that was being donated to the Australian War Museum. Newspaper clippings (see also Cat. Joynt was the seventh member of the newly formed Legacy in 1923 and became a member of the Board of Management in 1924 and worked closely with Stan Savige. He was also instrumental in gaining the support of both General Sir John Monash and the R.S.L. to build the Shrine of Remembrance, as well as ensuring media backing and thus public support for the project. He worked tirelessly for Legacy for 38 years until he retired at the age of 84, and entered fully into comradeship activities throughout his involvement. He won his VC in 1917 at Chuignes during one of the last battles on the Somme. The Victoria Cross is the highest award for acts of bravery in wartime and was instituted in 1856 by Queen Victoria. The Chairman of Legacy Co-ordinating Council, Legatee K.D. A photo of boys being instructed by Jim Tierney. The embroidered symbol on their shirts are 'DS' which stands for Don Esses. This was another group of boys that Legacy helped. From notes on the ILC (Intermediate Legacy Club): The ILC was formed in 1929 with a total membership of 18. The idea of the club sprang from those boys who had outgrown the Junior Legacy Club. In the early days it fielded a lacrosse team and it was this that mainly held the members together. Enthusiasm wained after a few years as it lacked a solid objective. The answer came from one of its members and in 1938 they founded the Don Esses Club. This was a club for the children of incapacitated ex-servicemen which met every Thursday night at 7.30 run by the ILC members. A special luncheon was held for 61 World War 1 widows as a lead up to "Legacy Week". Legatees dressed up as moustached waiters to add a bit of humour to the day. Due to its success it was held for a number of years. 1993 was Legacy's 70th Anniversary and the luncheon followed the WWI meeting on Thursday 12th August. Legatee waiters included Lucky Luscombe George Woodward and Alan Woodward (seen in the Answer newsletter article with his mother Myrtle). Ron Austin, a World War 1 veteran spoke to entertain the ladies.The photos include George Woodward adding a moustache on another legatee. See also 00908 for black and white photos of the same day. This report highlights the ongoing need to review and if necessary update and change policies and priorities if need be. The report explains that to provide recommendations and suggestions three working parties were established with two Legatees in charge of each group. In group1, 47 Legatees were involved, group 2&3, 59 Legatees involved in each group. Each group had a budget to work to and designated areas of Legacy activities to investigate and report on e.g. group1 would report on Accommodation, Housing, Handicapped Dependants, Firewood - refer to appendix A. Reports and suggestions are made in appendix B. Some recommendations suggest that Legacy and Legatees do not cease providing services but refer suitable applicants on to similar activities with other organisations if the need arises. This was due to declining numbers of Legatees to supervise, and those under the care of Legacy to paricipate. Due to declining numbers of Legatees and the number of families requiring help in certain areas, the report shows that Legacy needs to alter the way in which it delivers some of the services to Widows and families but still maintain the services that Legacy has provided previously. Celebrations for the 80th Anniversary of Legacy were held in the grounds of Government House in 2003. These photos show the Melbourne skyline in 2003 and views across MCG and the sports precinct. The note with the photos says: "Legacy's 80th Anniversary Function Over 1200 people recently attended Legacy's 80th Anniversary Function. The sun streaming through the picturesque garden surroundings at Government House contributed to the success of the day. Many of the guests enjoyed catching to the success of the day. Many of the guests enjoyed catching up with friends and acquaintances that go back a long way. Some had not seen each other for decades and there was much excitement renewing old friendships. The guests were entertained by The Royal Australian Navy Jazz Ensemble and the MC was David Mann from Radio 3AW." See also 00989, 00990 and 00991. Initially with the 2/16 Aust. Field Coy. R.A.E. and also in the Corps of the Royal Australian Engineers. He was inducted into Legacy in 1960 after being proposed by Legatee Edgar Sherwan and Legatee Syd Birrell. A bronze bust was erected in Morwell to honour Legacy Founder Sir Stanley Savige. It was unveiled on 31 August 2006 and Legatee Bill Rogers was invited to perform the unveiling. The article from the local newspaper says that "Legacy founder Sir Stanley Savige was finally immortalised in his birthplace, Morwell" with the unveiling of the bronze bust.
