souvenir glass was produced to commemorate the 1841 arrival in Australia from Ireland of James and Margaret Jellie . They were early settlers in the Warrnambool district, settling first at Port Fairy and then acquiring property along the Merri River in the Warrnambool area. Their children and families were prominent in the 19th and 20th centuries in the Warrnambool district as pastoralists, particularly in the Grasmere area. One son, James had an auctioneering firm in Warrnambool in the late 19th century and two of James’ and Margaret’s granddaughters, Mary and Dorcas. were well-known as teachers at the Warrnambool State School in the 20th century. This fragment is a piece of a cup that came from the Criterion Hotel in Warrnambool. This hotel, on the western side of Kepler Street near Lava Street, Warrnambool, was opened in 1872 with John Tate as the first licensee. Two notable families associated with the Criterion Hotel were the Humm family, (late 19th and early 20th centuries) and the McGennan family ( from the late 1920s on) The name on the fragment is that of Theresa Lynch who was the licensee of the hotel from 1919 to 1926 and the owner for most of that time. The hotel was closed in 2008 and, following a fire, the building was demolished in 2013.This fragment is of interest as it is one of the few items we have that date from the time of Theresa Lynch and the Criterion Hotel.This is a curved piece, one half of a white china cup. These items come from the household of the Angus family in Warrnambool. Dr William Roy Angus (1901-1970) studied medicine in Adelaide and Edinburgh. He practised medicine in South Australia and at Nhill before coming to Warrnambool in 1939. In later years he specialized in ophthalmology. The Angus family lived at ‘Birchwood’, a house now demolished. Dr Angus was very civic-minded and was active in a great number of community groups.These items are retained because of their connection to past years and because of their association with the well-known local Warrnambool doctor, Dr Angus. These stoneware jugs and bowl had been perennially popular in homes for many years and are still in homes today.These jugs are kept as mementos of household items popular in the past. Edward Williamson came to Warrnambool in the 1860s and set up a tailoring business. His son Frederick joined his father in the tailoring business and from the 1920s on was operating in Liebig Street. Frederick Williamson was a city councillor on three occasions and was the Warrnambool Mayor in 1942 and 1943.This coat has considerable significance as an example of the tailoring business of Frederick Williamson. The Williamson family operated as tailors in Warrnambool for over 70 years.This is a black cotton cloth lady's coat. These plaques were once on display at the Warrnambool racecourse with the smaller one originally affixed to a seat. These plaques commemorate the winner of the Grand Annual Steeplechase in Warrnambool in 1931. The Warrnambool Grand Annual Steeplechase was first held in June 1872. Today it is part of the Warrnambool May Racing Carnival and is run over 5,500 metres with 32 fences.In 1940 the winner was Martext and ridden by S McGee. This chair comes from Swintons Stores in Warrnambool and is said to have been used as a "Santa Chair" at Christmas time. Wiliam and Ann Swinton arrived in Australia in 1854. William, a builder opened a grocery, china and glassware store in Timor Street, Warrnambool in 1865. By 1888 the firm was known as William Swinton and Sons. Branch stores were opened at South Warrnambool, Raglan Parade, Wangoom, Cudgee and Nullawarre. In1934 the business split into two companies, Swintons Pty. Ltd. and George Swinton and Sons Pty. Ltd. The Swinton family still operate a business in Timor Street, Warrnambool, making it one of the oldest family businesses still operating in Australia.This chair is of considerable interest as it comes from the Swintons stores in Warrnambool and this is a business that has been operating in Timor Street since 1865.This is a wooden ( bent wood) chair with a round seat attached to the back by wooden screws. The seat insert, possibly basket wear is missing. There is a lower circular piece of wood under the seat and this is broken at one end. There are four bowed legs. This book (a reprint of a book first published in 1986) was written by Jean MacKenzie and details the life of her grandmother, Jessie MacGillivray. Much of the information on Jessie MacGillivray comes directly from the diaries she kept. The book is also a great social history of 19th century and early 20th century Peterborough and district. This book is of considerable interest as it contains historical information on one family in particular and a region (Peterborough and district). Many of the people and events mentioned had a direct bearing on Warrnambool’s history (eg. James McKain Meek, local shipwrecks). This horseshoe was carried by Ena Todd when she married Jack Heazlewood in Warrnambool in 1942. A horseshoe ornament was often carried by brides in the 20th century (and also still are today) as horseshoes are traditionally a symbol of good luck. They were usually home-made by family members and other well-wishers. Mary Josephine (Ena) Todd was born in Warrnambool in 1920 and was a hairdresser at the Josephine’s Salon in Warrnambool. When she married Jack Heazlewood he was a stoker on the H.M.A.S. Sydney. They later lived on Sydney.This horseshoe is of interest, firstly as a sample of the type of good luck ornament often carried by brides in the 20th century, and secondly as a memento of the wedding day of Ena Todd, a resident of Warrnambool in the mid 20th century. This item comes from the great aunts of the donor, women of the Kinnear family of Allandale, Allansford. In the early 1840s William and John Allan took up large tracts of land to the east of the Hopkins River. In 1906 a portion of the Allandale section, including the homestead, was acquired by the Kinnear family. This hat is retained as an example of a woman’s hat from 80 years ago – stylish and eye-catching. This handmade woman’s nightdress comes from the Kinnear family of Allandale, Allansford. This satchel belonged to John Malcolm Fraser (1930-2015), the 22nd Prime Minister of Australia from 1975 to 1983. Malcolm Fraser was educated at Melbourne Grammar and Oxford University and lived for many years on the family property, Nareen in the Western District. He was the leader of the Australian Liberal Party and was the Federal member in the seat of Wannon in the Western District, an area which included Warrnambool. As the Prime Minister he took a particular interest in foreign affairs. This satchel was donated by Malcolm Fraser to a charity auction held in Warrnambool in 1997 in aid of the Red Cross and the purchaser of the satchel at that time has since donated the item to the Warrnambool and District Historical Society. This satchel is of considerable significance as it belonged to Malcolm Fraser, the Prime Minister of Australia from 1975 to 1983, the local member in the Federal seat of Wannon and a property owner and resident in the Western District of Victoria. This is a brown leather brief case or satchel. The compartment on one side has a metal catch and holders inside for pencils and pens. This side also has another compartment with a zip fastener and two extra pockets with flaps on the top held by metal catches. There is another compartment on the other side with an extra pocket enclosed with a zip folder. There is a leather handle on the top of the satchel and inside one of the pockets is an extra leather strap to extend the handle length. The handle has a maroon-coloured airways tag attached with information on the satchel’s owner. There is some scuffing near the top handle. The company published annual directories of residents and businesses in Australia from 1857 to 1974 and these directories today are highly sought after by genealogists and researchers. This album is of interest as the photographs are of Agnes Ardlie and her extended family in the 1920s and 30s and thus provide an insight not only into the lives of a prominent Warrnambool family but also gives us a glimpse of the social aspects of the lives of the more affluent families in Warrnambool during that period and of the custom of keeping photograph albums to preserve the photographs.This is a soft cover photograph album with a light brown cover bound with white string. This album comes from the estate of Dorothy and Agnes Ardlie. It contains family photographs and ones taken in Adelaide, and Melbourne and scenes around the Great Ocean Road. Dorothy Ardlie (1910-1993) and Agnes Ardlie (1915-1993) were the daughters of Arthur and Ethel Ardlie of Warrnambool, the granddaughters of William Ardlie, a prominent Warrnambool lawyer and his wife Mary and the great granddaughters of John and Mary Ardlie, pioneer settlers in Warrnambool. They lived for some years at Aroona, 19 Princess Street, Warrnambool.This album is of interest because it shows the social life of a more affluent family in the mid 20th century and documents in particular the lives and interests of Dorothy and Agnes Ardlie, members of a prominent 20th century Warrnambool family. This is a soft cover photograph album with a light brown cover and an embedded decorative pattern on the left front cover. The album is bound with white string. The cover edges are frayed. These items concern the history of the Baulch family ownership of Cowabee, a large grazing property in the Riverina in N.S.W. In the 1870s Samuel Baulch, the son of pioneer Kirkstall settlers, Francis and Ann Baulch, established a property in the Macarthur/Hawkesdale area called Rose Park. In 1893 he acquired Dunmore, a nearby property, and Rose Park became part of that estate. In 1910 Samuel Baulch purchased Cowabee in N.S.W. and Stan Baulch, the son of Samuel and Eliza, later managed Cowabee for some years. After Samuel’s death Stan Baulch and his two brothers split up Dunmore and Stan acquired the eastern third which he named Rose Park. Cowabee was sold in 1922. This booklet and associated material is of some historical interest as a summary of the history of Cowabee, one of the properties owned by the Baulch family of the Western District in the early 20th century. It will be of some use to researchers, with the photographs an added bonus. .1 This is a booklet of 41 pages with a buff-coloured paper cover with a black tape binding.
