Newspaper clipping titled: “100 miles by tram” – “Party rode through the night” Diamond Valley News – Tues January 13, 1970 Photo and text of tram # 469, hired by Diamond Valley Miniature railway club, Brunswick depot, Mont Albert terminus, Special tram #469 pulled out of Brunswick depot at 11:00PM on Friday 9 January 1970 on a 100-mile trip. Returned at 10:00AM on Saturday Hired by Diamond Valley Miniature railway club for a social trip, club organiser John Murdoch is a tram driver, drove tram through suburbs. Tram 469 is an American-style body in which driver isn't partitioned from the passengers. Used to carry tourists in 19430's. Tram has been used by confectionary company for its "little box of chocolates" ad on TV. Has two cable tram sets in the background. Horse Tram No. 4, with the now Moreland Hotel in the background. Date around 1900, prior to the introduction of bogie trailers. Frame - brown varnished timber frame, glazed with clear glass, white card backing with brown tape on rear, brass wire hanging wire with small eye hooks the side. SW5 class. .11 - 3 pages - The Electrical Engineer and Merchandiser - 15/9/1950 - "Noiseless Tramcar - first Australian Vehicles - Bogies fitted have special noise reducing features - motor drive through bevel gears, dynamic braking" - PCC 980 (See also Reg Item 5601 for a similar report) .12 - 1 page - handwritten on the rear of a copy of item 11 - Editorial from the Oct. 1951 issue of same magazine looking at the rate of acceleration. Reprint of .7 added 30/7/2019, from papers ex Robert Green - in poor condition, has been folded, both left and right hand edges in multiple tears. The photos are good. Photograph, Black and White, of the Level Crossing in Lygon St with the inner Circle Railway North Carlton, with Melbourne Brunswick and Coburg Tram No. 19 crossing with the interlocked gates and signal box in the view. Photo mid 1921. The level crossing was electrified on 5-7-1921, but the wires etc would have been positioned earlier. Another W2 is behind. .2 - W5 828 running West Maribyrnong Route 57. .3 - W2 634 with the conductor appearing to be unclipping the trolley pole rope - standing on the bumper bar. See Reg Item 4792 for a reference to a shunter being located at this location in the early 1950's. .4 - trams arriving and departing In the background is the Flinders St Station and Hosies Hotel. Negative (120) of the intersection of Moreland Road and Sydney Road, Brunswick, during the 1920's. In the view is a cable tram set shunting. A tramway employee and two boys at the front of the grip car seem to be manipulating something. Saloon car is No. 183 with the conductor pushing the car. The grip car has the destination of Brunswick and the saloon Flinders St? Note the two steel tramway poles and overhead for the North Coburg electric tram service from Moreland Rod into Sydney Road. In the background is the Moreland Hotel, Clarkson chemist and the Commercial Bank of Australia. An low resolution A4 laminated was received with the negatives.
