Although Lee DeForest invented the triode vacuum in 1906, it was not employed in hearing aids until 1921. The first hearing aid using a vacuum tube was purported to have been made by Earl C. Hanson. He called his hearing aid the Vactuphone. It used one small peanut tube (below right) to amplify the output of a carbon hearing aid. The Globe Hearing Aid Company and Western Electric collaborated to manufacture the Vactuphone. By the early 1940s, Raytheon had developed miniature vacuum tubes. It was these miniature vacuum tubes that made body-worn hearing aids a reality. Unfortunately, the power requirements of these aids made it necessary to use two relatively large batteries—an "A" battery to power the filaments of the vacuum tubes and a "B" battery to supply the high-voltage for the plate current. The batteries were worn external to the hearing aid itself and the name "Two-piece" hearing aid was used to describe them. Until about 1945 "Two-piece" hearing aids were the norm. However, improved vacuum tube design reduced current requirements. As a result, battery manufacturers were able to reduce the size of the batteries used in hearing aids. At the same time, electronic components were also being miniaturized. This allowed the hearing aid manufacturers to design hearing aids with internal batteries. After 1945, these "One-piece" hearing aids quickly replaced the more cumbersome "Two-piece" hearing aids. With continuing improvements in both batteries and components, hearing aids continued to reduce in size until 1953 when the vacuum tube was suddenly supplanted by the transistor.Fawn plastic hearing aid with metal clip on back and wires leading from the bottom. Else Oertel was an internee in Camp 3A from 1940-1945. Else (a German) was interned in a camp where Russian was being taught & so took up lessons. Her husband was away on business in Germany at the outbreak of war and was not interned with them & therefore Else was also motivated to learn Russian because it was possible she would be repatriated to the Russian sector of Germany at the end of the war (namely Chemnitz, Saxony). This book is one she used in these lessons.Foolscap size exercise book. Composed of unlined pages hand-bound together inside a manila folder(?) / other cardboard. Spine has lined paper on outer & inner spine has lined paper with sums handwritten (perhaps new use for old maths lesson book?).|Book contains lessons in Russian (possibly dication?) with occasional German notations. Lessons are carbon copies from another source. Miniature bath shaped metal ash tray. On one side there is a rest for a cigarette. The bath shape rests on 3 ball shaped legs. Has been painted blue by the donor. Originally metal unpainted. The head end is higher - sloping down to the foot end. Presumably made by POW's during WW2. Folio, Kiessling Collection, 1939-1946
German National, Walter Kiessling snr. an employee of a German firm was interned in Camp 1, Tatura. His wife remained in Melbourne where there son Walter was born. The father was immediately taken to Melbourne under escort to see his wife and baby son. Subsequently his wife would travel to Murchison by train and ride her bicycle, with the baby in a basket, out to the camp to visit her husband. Later visits were with a friend in their DKW car. Young Walter was christened by a Lutheran Pastor in the camp, under the supervision of Major Schrader, the Garrison Commandant. A concise and interesting story of the Loveday internment group Barmera SA with first hand knowledge and donated to the Museum by its author Ern Whitmore, born 1899. The forward by Lt. E. T Dean DSO VD is particularly worthy of note.A 32 page manuscript each enclosed in an individual clear plastic envelope. The top half of the front page "internment in South Australia" which is superimposed on an indistinct plan of probably be an internment camp. The lower half has a sentry with rifle in a sentry box overlooking a camp at night. Photograph, Female Office in Mustard Uniform - caricature, 1941-1946
Hans Walter von Gruenewaldt was a German POW who used his artistic ability to paint several large mural caricatures whilst he was held at Camp 13 at Murchison. The technique he used was colourful house paint, painted directly onto the walls of the German mess hut, reading room and recreation hall. After the war, the recreation hall paintings and all, was moved from the camp to the nearly town of Murchison and used as the RSL local dance hall for 50 years. When the hall was demolished the paintings were restored and framed by citizens of Murchison. The von Gruenewaldt murals presently hang in the David Jones Nursing home and other public buildings in Murchison.Photograph of caricature painted on mess hut wall.
