Williamstown Botanic Gardens- Hobsons Bay City Council
Postcard – Williamstown Botanic Gardens, The Crown Studios, Sydney, c1900-1920
The Curator’s lodge, designed by the Town Surveyor, HV Champion, was constructed in 1907 following the re-organisation of the north-east corner with the demolition of the old curator's cottage and erection of new gates. Lee Heap Furniture Warehouse of Williamstown used the postcards to advertise. The postcards are evidence of the interest the gardens held as a subject for postcard publishers. The text and images provide a snapshot into fashions, social interests and concerns of the time. The professionally produced images provide a pictorial history of Gardens including changing planting styles, various structures and features of the Gardens eg the aviary, cannons, the fountain, the second Curator’s Lodge and gates. The images offer an opportunity to compare garden vistas with the present day.A sepia image looking across a path bordered with rocks of a house (the Curators lodge) behind a fence. In front of the fence there is a young girl sitting on a rock with a young boy standing beside her. The house is timber with two brick chimneys, the right hand one half hidden by foliage. The house is federation style with timber battening above the front window. A timber frieze is above a verandah supported by three posts and light coloured brackets. Front: ‘Williamstown Gardens. Vic.’ ‘0457/1’ THE CROWN STUDIOS, SYDNEY’. Reverse: Centre top ‘POST CARD’ with a logo in the middle of the words. Left top corner a drawing of an artist’s board and brushes with a camera in the centre. Left side ‘MESSAGE ONLY.’ Right side ‘ADDRESS ONLY.’ Top right corner inside a dotted rectangle ‘STAMP HERE’. Bottom on card ‘BY THE CROWN STUDIOS, SYNDEY.’ Under the vertical line down the middle line ‘Neither the Address not the Message must cross this line’. In ink ‘With Compliments / from’. A competition was announced to design a suitable building for the proposed Melbourne International Exhibition in December 1877. Eighteen entries were received. The winner of 300 pounds was Joseph Reed of the architectual firm Reed and Barnes. The foundation stone was laid by Governor Sir George Bowen on 19 February 1879. Prominent Melbounre builder David Mitchell, father of Dame Nellie Melba, won the tender to construct the main building. Exhibitors were able to move in by May 1880. On 01 October 1880 the Melbourne International Exhibition opened, when over 6000 people entered the main hall to see the Governor, the Marquess of Normanby open the show. Thirty three nations participated and ofver 32,000 exhibits were displayed. At the close of the exhibition on 30 April 1881 over 1.3 million people had visited the exhibition. In 1881 Victoria's population was just over 250,000. The management of the Exhibition Building and eight hectares of the Carlton Gardens was handed to the Exhibition Trustees by the Melbourne International Exhibition Commissioners on 01 OCtober 1881. The Trustees maintained the building for 'future public exhibitions and ... general public instruction and recreation' until 1996 when management of the building was transferred to Museum Victoria. In 1901 when the Australian colonies federated there was no capital and no federal parliament building. The Federal Parliament moved into the Victorian State Parliament building, and the State Parliament moved into the Western Annexe of the Exhibition Building for 26 years. After World War One, on 04 February 1919, the exhibition Building was turned into a hospital to treat Melbournians struck down with the Spanis 'Flu'. Initially housing 500 beds, the hospital grew to accomodate 2000 patients. Femals were located between the concert platform in the western nave and the done; male patients occupied the spaces beyond. The basement was used a a morgue. With the departure of the State Parliament in 1927 the western annexe became home to the Country Roads Board. In 1932 it was joined by the MOtor Registration Branch, and the Transport Regulation Board in 1934. They co-existedin cramped offices until the 1960s. In 1949 the oval at the rear of the ExhibitionBuilding was leased to the Commonealth Government for the establishment of the Migrant Reception Centre. When it closed in 1961-62, the centre comrised 29 bungalows over 1.4 hectare. The centre provided temporary accomodation for thousands of new arrivals from Britain. On 01 July 2004 the Royal Exhibition Building and Carlton Gardens were inscribed on the World Heritage List. It is the only 19th century Great Hall to survive largely intact, still in its original landscape setting, and still used as a palace of industry. The Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show is a flower show held annually since 1995 in early April each year, in Melbourne, Australia. It is located in the World Heritage Site of Carlton Gardens and the Royal Exhibition Building.[1] It is the largest horticultural event in the southern hemisphere, attracting over 100,000 visitors. It is rated among the top five flower and garden shows in the world. Federation University Art Collection
Sculpture, 'Mungo Moon' by Don Barrett, 2015
'Mungo Moon' by Don Barrett is the first sculpture erected on the Churchill Art and Culture Pathway. It was officially unveiled by Professor David Battersby on 15 April 2015 From Churchill & District News 16 October 2014 The Churchill Art and Culture Walking Pathway will have its official public opening on Saturday October 18, with a walk finishing at Federation University Australia’s Switchback Gallery at the Federation University Gippsland Campus. ... An important link on the newly developed pathway was recently completed with a path south of the FedUni Student West Residences. The path now allows walkers to turn off the Eel Hole Creek path before reaching Glendonald Estate and to follow a picturesque, tree lined walkway to join up with the footpath on the Eastern side of Northways Road. From there the footpath joins into Federation University’s network of walking paths that proceeds past the Switchback Art Gallery, down through the pine plantation and along Lake Kretlow and the Churchill Golf Course. Project Manager Mike Answerth, said the opening of the West Residences section of the path means there is now only one short link to complete. “We’re now very close to realising the project’s objective to join up all these walking paths to provide a continuous pathway that encompasses town, campus and parkland. The next stage of the project will be the completion of Latrobe City’s East West Link and the enhancement of the walking path with artistic and cultural features.” said Mr. Answerth. Head of Federation University Australia Gippsland Campus, Dr Harry Ballis, said the project had been made possible through the contributions of the five former Gippsland Education Precinct (GEP) partners. “The Art and Culture Pathway represents another important step in joining the Churchill township and the university campus as a physical and social entity,” Dr Ballis said. “This was an initiative of the GEP and it is pleasing to see it coming to fruition.” The path now reaches as far as the golf driving range but plans are already under way to connect with the Mathison Park board walk and pathway, which surrounds Lake Hyland in Churchill. When the loop is completed, residents and visitors will have an approximately 5km circular walking path which links up the Churchill town centre, Federation University Australia and Mathison Park. There are already art features along this route, including primary schools’ Bug Blitz totems near the Kurnai College school crossing, native vegetation and history panels near the Hare Homestead in Mathison Park, and outdoor sculptures in the pine trees near the Federation University Switchback Gallery. contemporaryA large sculpture in five pieces set in an external location. It is part of the Churchill Art and Culture Walking Pathway. Don Barrett’s work is mainly in concrete with added coloured oxides to portray the feeling of the Australian landscape. Barrett focuses on concepts of Australia’s short history and indigenous history. churchill art and culture pathway, barrett, don barrett, gippsland campus, federation university, churchill, sculpture -
