Photo shows the first build of the upgraded Y class design classified Y1 Class 610. Four of these Trams were built in the MMTB Preston Workshops in 1930, 610 to 613. There was one solitary Y Class tram 469. They were built with the intention of evaluating one-man operation. Due to their higher cost and Union resentment, the MMTB resorted to the proven W Class tram design. All Y and Y1 classes were withdrawn from regular passenger service in 1965 and transferred to the Driver training school at Hawthorn Depot. All cars are preserved in various museums in Australia. Book, Worsted Preparing & Spinning, 1923
This book is a technical book that was originally from the Wendouree Woollen Mills but latterly was part of a collection of books owned by the Warrnambool Woollen Mill. The Wendouree Woollen Mills in Ballarat began in 1870 as a flour mill and became the Doveton Woollen Mill in 1877. In 1918 it became the Myer Woollen Mill (Myer Emporium ownership) and in the 1920s it was a knitting mill. After Myer sold the mill it was known as Wendouree Woollen Mill but it closed in 1975. The Warrnambool Woollen Mill in Harris Street, Warrnambool was established in 1910 on the site of an earlier woollen mill destroyed by fire in 1882. It was a successful business for many years and closed in 2000 after 90 years of operations but by that time it had been bought by successive companies including the multinational company Dunlop. In 1968 the Warrnambool Woollen Mills (Dunlop era) purchased Wendouree Woollen Mills and transferred much of its operations to Warrnambool until the Ballarat mill was closed in 1975. This explains why a Wendouree Woollen Mill book was in the Warrnambool Woollen Mill building when it closed. This book is of some interest as a good example of technical books produced in the early 1920s. It would have been well-used by woollen mills workers and foremen at the time. It is also of interest as it comes from the Warrnambool Woollen Mill and so it is a memento of a most important and influential business in Warrnambool in the 20th century. A great number of local people were employed at this mill over the years and it enjoyed for many years a national reputation for quality products. This is a hard cover book with a dark blue cover and gold lettering on the front cover and the spine. The title of the book is printed in an ornate script and is underlined with two gold lines. The book has 277 pages commencing with page 273 as the book is Volume Two of this title. The book, about wool combing was written by Fred Bradbury. It has a Preface, a Contents page and fifteen chapters commencing with Chapter 21 and ending with Chapter 35, an Index and several pages of advertisements for other technical books. The book has several black and white photographs of machinery and illustrations and sketches demonstrating mechanical and technical processes. The book has some small stains on the front cover.Front Cover: ‘Worsted Preparing and Spinning (Wool Combing) by Fred Bradbury’ Spine: ‘Worsted Preparing and Spinning, Vol11- Bradbury – F.King & Sons Ld., Halifax, England’. Iron Box - Steam or Dry, Model No
The Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme (KHES) produced electricity for the people living in the Kiewa Valley and beyond to many parts of Victoria. The people and their families working on the scheme were encouraged by their employer the State Electricity Commission of Victoria to purchase and use electrical appliances. The iron was popular as it was quick and easy compared to those used previously. This iron belonged to Ron White who was a senior member of staff during the construction and operation of the KHES.This iron was owned by Ron White who was appointed Area Operations Engineer Kiewa in June 1956. He was later appointed General Superintendent and then, in 1974, he was appointed Principal Hydro Engineer of the recently titled Hydro Division.Rectangular yellow and black cardboard box with 'complete' fitting lid. Kiewa Valley Historical Society
Meter Millivolt, after 1950
This milli-volt meter was manufactured after 1950 and used by the SEC Vic (Kiewa Hydro Electricity Scheme) from that date until late 1900's. It was used to measure very small voltages associated with the operation of the various Hydro Generators. The readings were able to be shown by the resistor in use in the current circuit. During this time period, high quality testing instruments were either sourced from Europe or England. This milli-volt meter is very significant to the Kiewa Valley as it was used by those electrical technicians, who were part of the Kiewa Hydro Scheme. An "off spin" from the Scheme was the beginning of an explosion in "human" resources into the Kiewa Valley. This influx of population transformed the region from that of a basically quiet rural region to one which evolved into both industrial and larger residential community. This evolution in the Kiewa Valley created a change, not only in the "physical" landscape(better roads and infrastructure), but also the socio-economic growth within the Valley allowing other "tourist" based industries to expand within the valley and Alpine areas. This millivolts DC meter was used in the 1950's. It is contained in a wooden box and has two coloured (red/black, positive and negative) screw tight knobs which have bake-lite connections. It also has a covered (black tin) view meter marked from zero to 10 millivolts. Underneath this and within a round bake-lite is a small adjustment screw. The top of the box is fastened onto the main structure by six brass screws. The back of the structure is fastened by eight brass screws and there are four small bake-lite rest knobs. On the face of the millivolt compartment , and at the top "TO BE USED WITH DIAL HORIZONTAL TEMP.
