Deborah Halpern (b.1957 Melb) with Malcolm Laurence (b.1974 Melb), Malcolm Laurence, The Spirit of Nillumbik (balustrade panels x11); Location: Eltham Town Square - Main St, Eltham, 2001
In October 2000, Council invited three artists from the region (Deborah Halpern, Matcham Skipper, Tony Trembath) to submit designs for a sculpture / public art work for the Eltham Town Square. The commission was paid for by supermarket giant Safeway (Woolies) as part of its supermarket permit, which required them to contribute to beautification work in the Town Square. This is the first of three parts. The 'Spirit of Nillumbik' is a celebration of the artistic spirit of Eltham and surrounding communities. Each area is identified through the flora and fauna represented in the panels. The work honours the many creative artists and architects, past and present, who have built homes and shaped lives and livelihoods with their unique creative spirit. Halpern describes her work as a public expression of their individual and collective visions. Halpern acknowledges these contributions to our hand-made history and the influence they have on the character and identity of Eltham and Nillumbik. Five picture and six woven balustrades each made out of welded steel / organic wrought iron and coated with wax. Imagery (flora - plants, landscapes and fauna - animals, birds, reptiles, insects) are all based on the local environment. There is also a relevant aboriginal presence amongst each of the panels. Each panel represents the different areas that make up the Shire. Document - Invitation to a Royal Review at Flemington, 1901
The correspondent of The Argus recorded that: "The Parliament of the Commonwealth was opened yesterday by the Duke, of Cornwall and York, under a Commission signed by Queen Victoria and subsequently endorsed by King Edward VII. The ceremony was marked by the splendour and solemn impressiveness which befitted its historic importance. ... To-day the Heir to the Throne will review some 15,000 Australian troops at Flemington. ... It is a function which, on a lesser scale, might have been arranged at any time for many years past; but it could never previously have conveyed the meaning it does now. Soldiering was popularly regarded as a pastime here until South Africa tried the mettle of our men. It is serious business from henceforth. Those who followed the nascent aspirations of the volunteer soldiery in Australia must be impressed at the rapidity of their fulfillment. ... The document design has artistic and aesthetic merit. While it is not rare, it is representative of the kinds of formal designs used for the Australian Commonwealth celebrations at the time of Federation, and is in excellent condition. Such items as this invitation have local, state and national historic significance as mementoes of a key moment in Australia's history. Locally, the invitation is part of a group of Federation-related items issued to James Maitland Campbell (and his wife). Campbell was three times mayor of Kew in the second half of the 19th Century and the owner of Ramornie in Pakington Street, one of the significant extant mansions in Kew. An invitation, mounted on card to the Royal Review held at Flemington racecourse on Friday 10 May 1901, as part of the Government of Victoria's Australian Commonwealth Celebrations. The border is vividly decorated with flags, shields and a large coat of arms. The photographic images depict various scenes of Flemington in Melbourne, in addition to two separate portraits of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York. Illustrations of military servicemen on foot and horseback flank the central block of text. The invitation was addressed to Mr & Mrs J. M. Campbell. This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. Together it forms the largest privately-donated collection within the archives of the Kew Historical Society.Harp of Erin (c.1864-1956). Strategically situated on Bulleen Road (High Street) in East Kew, the ‘Harp of Erin’ was built on the corner of Harp Road and High Street. The present hotel is the third to be built on the site. A second, two storey brick and stucco hotel built c.1864 replaced an earlier wooden structure built in 1854 by Edward Glynn. The ‘Harp’ was a local landmark, used by the Melbourne Hunt Club for their meetings. The Club had their kennels behind the hotel, and at meets, red-coated riders might be seen assembling from all directions. The later building was constructed in 1956."Harp of Erin Hotel. This photograph depicts the style of uniform worn by the Trained nurses of the Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS) at that time. It shows part of a Cable Tram being the type of Public transport used by the Trained nurses to visit their patients. This group of Trained nurses are about to board trams to commence their visits to MDNS patients who require nursing care in their homes.District Nursing has had various modes of transport over the last 130 years. At first, from 1885 as Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS), their Trained Nurses walked the streets and lane ways amid the slums of central Melbourne. As the Society expanded public transport was used, and bicycles were bought by the Society in 1903 and used in inner areas until 1955. During the Spanish flu epidemic, in 1919, MDNS appealed for assistance to procure Motor vehicles so the Nurses could visit an influx of cases. Through trusts, grants and donations four 'Ford 'T Model' cars were procured which enabled the nurses to triple their visits. Through constant use the cars were in such a poor state they were sold in 1927. A Motor Auxiliary was formed in 1929 to take Nurses to patients, and some nurses used their own cars; even a motorcycle was used by one nurse in 1933. All these forms of transport were intermingled until, having received Royal patronage; the now Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS) had its own full fleet of vehicles.A slightly fuzzy black and white photograph which shows six Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS) Sisters standing at a tram stop wearing uniforms of full length coats and grey brimmed hats bearing a Maltese cross insignia on the hat band. The MDNS Trained nurses (Sisters) are about to board two motor vehicles outside their Nurses home, at 39 Victoria Parade, Collingwood, to be driven to give nursing care to their patients who lived a distance away. The lady Chauffeur is probably Miss Sword who was employed by MDNS in 1922-23; she was also in charge of the garage. This enabled the Sisters to do more visits in a day than when using Public transport all the time. This image also shows the style of cars driven in that era. The Sisters uniforms are grey and their hats have a red Maltese cross attached to the centre front of the hatband. Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS) has had various modes of transport over the last 130 plus years. At first, from 1885 as Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS), their Trained nurses (Nurses) walked the streets and lane ways amid the slums of central Melbourne. As the Society expanded public transport was used, and bicycles were bought by the Society in 1903 and used in inner areas until 1945. During the Spanish flu epidemic, in 1919, MDNS appealed for assistance to procure Motor vehicles so the Nurses could visit an influx of cases. Through trusts, grants and donations four 'Ford T Model' cars were procured which enabled the Nurses to triple their visits. Through constant use the cars were in such a poor state two were sold in 1922 and the others later. In 1922-23 three Peugeot cars were purchased and a female Chauffeur, 'Miss Sword', was employed who lived in the Home and was also in charge of the garage. MDNS was expanding, and In 1929 Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS) formed a volunteer Motor Auxiliary to transport their Trained Nurses (Sisters) to make visits more patients who lived a distance away. At first wealthy people offered their car and chauffeur, but then the general public supplied their own vehicles. They operated on week days when able and could take up to three Sisters at a time, collecting them from the Nurses Home, 39 Victoria Parade, Collingwood, at 9 a.m; dropping each Sister at a patient then picking them up and taking them to the next patient before completing the morning round and returning to the Nurses Home at 1 p.m.. The Sisters were able to double the number of visits they did each morning and did their afternoon visits on public transport. At its peak there were 60 volunteers but this fell off during World War 11. In 1944 the Red Cross were assisting, and by 1953 were taking out 16 MDNS Sisters. Appeals for volunteers occurred over the years, particularly during the Tram and Tramway Bus strike in the 1950s, and when the Royal Women's Hospital had an influx of births and wanted to send the mothers and babies home on day four but could not do so if M.D.N.S. could not visit. During 1962 the Motor Auxiliary transported 34 Sisters who preferred not to drive themselves, but as the MDNS fleet of cars grew there was less need for their service and the Auxiliary was disbanded in 1971. Some Sisters used their own cars; even a motorcycle was used by one Sister in 1933. All these forms of transport were intermingled and in the early 1950s, and now as Melbourne District Nursing Service, seven Ford Prefect cars were bought followed by twelve Ford Anglia cars 1955. Having received Royal patronage; the now Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS) had its own fleet of Holden vehicles by the mid 1960s and the Motor Auxiliary ceased operating in 1971 as by then all staff employed were required to have a driving licence. Seat-belts had been introduced to Victoria in 1959 and District fitted them to their cars from 1962, even though they did not become compulsory until 1970. The Holden vehicles were replaced with grey Holden Torana vehicles. After several years the fleet was changed to white Toyota Corolla vehicles. The Melways Directory of maps was introduced in 1966, which was a boon to the Sisters, though it was a few years before it went beyond Seville, so a large paper map was used by the Sisters visiting patients in the areas passed Seville. By 2009 there were 598 cars in the fleet and the Sisters travelled 9 million 200,000 kilometres – this is equivalent to 12 trips to the moon and back. IA black and white digital image showing, in the left foreground, the frontal view of an early model, 1920s, soft hooded car parked on the road next to the gutter. Photograph, 1880
According to the Victorian Patents Office Copyright Collection (VPOCC) index, Barnes' image was first published on July 3, 1880. Many of the photographs taken by William Barnes concerned with the Kelly Gang were registered with the VPOCC which has ensured their survival in the State Library of Victoria today. Thus image includes the depiction of Sergeant Arthur Loftus Maule Steele (kneeling in front row) surrounded by seven other men. These men are identified as belonging to the Wangaratta police who played a key part in the destruction of the Kelly Gang at Glenrowan. These men could include Constables Causey, Montiford, Patrick Healey, Walsh, William Moore, Dixon and James Dwyer. It is also suggested that the individual standing back right (in the dark coat) is Constable Hugh Bracken, a key figure in the Glenrowan Siege. The police in this image display their firearms in a manner which reflects photographs of hunters, an element which was typical for this period. This photograph is part of the Burke Museum "Kelly album" which includes a significant collection of photographs and artefacts connected to Ned Kelly and the Kelly Gang. Ned Kelly and his gang have become ingrained in Australian popular culture and thus many museums, art galleries and private collections house material connected to the Kelly story which allows the events and people to be researched and interpreted. Artefacts and photographs pertaining to the Kelly gang are particularly valuable for Australian museums. This particular photograph is significant for its connection to Wangaratta photographer William Barnes who is responsible for having taken and registered many images depicting members of the Kelly gang. The photograph is also of artistic significance as an example of a photograph dating to 1880. This image depicts members of the Wangaratta police shortly after the defeat of the Kelly gang at Glenrowan. This photograph has the capacity to provide important information about the police who took part in Glenrowan 1880 and depicts key figures like Sergeant Steele.Sepia photograph taken by professional photographer William Edward Barnes (1941-1916) in June of 1880. Royal Banner of Scotland
The earliest recorded use of the Lion rampant as a royal emblem in Scotland was by Alexander II in 1222;[5] with the additional embellishment of a double border set with lilies occurring during the reign of Alexander III (1249–1286).[5] This emblem occupied the shield of the royal coat of arms of the ancient Kingdom of Scotland which, together with a royal banner displaying the same, was used by the King of Scots until the Union of the Crowns in 1603, when James VI acceded to the thrones of the Kingdom of England and Kingdom of Ireland.[6] Since 1603, the Lion rampant of Scotland has been incorporated into both the royal arms and royal banners of successive Scottish then British monarchs in order to symbolise Scotland; as can be seen today in the Royal Standard of the United Kingdom.[7] Although now officially restricted to use by representatives of the Sovereign and at royal residences, the Royal Standard of Scotland continues to be one of Scotland's most recognisable symbols.[8] The Royal Standard of Scotland, (Scottish Gaelic: Bratach rìoghail na h-Alba), also known as the Banner of the King of Scots,[1] or more commonly the Lion Rampant of Scotland,[2] is the Scottish Royal Banner of Arms.[3] Used historically by the King of Scots, the Royal Standard of Scotland differs from Scotland's national flag, the Saltire, in that its correct use is restricted by an Act of the Parliament of Scotland to only a few Great Officers of State who officially represent the Sovereign in Scotland.[3] It is also used in an official capacity at royal residences in Scotland when the Sovereign is not present.[4] Rectangular shaped glass covered picture frame with the Royal Banner Of Scotland flag.flags, royal banner of scotland, lion rampant of scotland, lara r.s.l. -

Photograph - Photograph - Portland Corkscrew, n.d
From the Port of Portland website: The original corkscrew was built as a gift to the Portland Harbour Trust by the contractors who constructed the port. It was designed in 1960 and fabricated shortly after the completion of the Main Breakwater. The corkscrew was built as an observatory, with the observation deck approximately 13 metres above sea level. Its original design life was less than 25 years. The original structure was dilapidated, extremely unsafe and in danger of collapse. Understanding the historical and community importance of the original structure, in 2016 Port of Portland began the process of designing and building a replacement. The new corkscrew is a similar size and has been based on the same spiral shape of the original structure. The corkscrew has been constructed using mild steel, heavily coated in marine grade paint (similar to what is used on ships). Heavy duty plastic has been used for the walkway section which will withstand the harsh elements of the marine environment.Photograph of the Portland Corkscrew in the 1980sportland, seafront, maritime, portland landmark, corkscrew, port of portland -

Flag - Civil flag of the Kingdom of Italy, Circa 1940
The flag of Sardinia was adopted as the official flag of the newly formed Kingdom of Italy in 1861. The flag incorporates the armorial bearings of the Royal House of Savoy, the family who ruled Italy until it voted to become a republic in 1948. Civil flag of the Kingdom of Italy featuring three vertical panels of green (hoist) white and red cotton, sewn together. Sewn into each side of the centre (white) panel is a representation of the coat of arms of the House of Savoy - a blue-bordered red square, quartered by a white cross. This flag would later become the flag of the Kingdom of Italy, and the tricolor without the Savoyard escutcheon remains the flag of Italy. The exact date of the creation of this flag is uncertain, however as it was in use in Italy until the formal establishment of the Italian Republic, it may have been made between 1848 and 1946. This particular flag was brought back at the conclusion of WWII and donated to the Terang RSL Sub-branch.The Civil flag of the Kingdom of Italy is comprised of a red, white and green vertical cotton panels, which have been stitched together by cotton. Badge, medallion, City of Warrnambool 1918, 1918
From its beginnings in the late 1840's, Warrnambool progressed through the years from being a town and borough to finally being proclaimed a city in May 1918. Three similar medallions in the form of a brooch with clasp, all in gilt metal and enamel. Round medallions 25mm in circumference, with blue enamel circular rim of 4mm around most of the outside, except for white enamel decal of 10mm at bottom. Pin clasp on reverse of the medallions. Cigarette Tin, Millhof Co Pty Ltd, Estimated date: 1920-1950
Small, very rusty cigarette tin would have held 20 De Reszke virginia cigarettes. The cigarettes were named after Jean De Reszke (1850-1925), a famous Polish opera singer and were advertised as "The Aristocrat of Cigarettes". Produced by J. Millhoff (a Russian cigarette maker living in London). A special blend of tobacco - that was believed not to damage the famous singer's voice. In gratitude Millhoff was allowed to sell the brand as "De Reszke" cigarettes.Top: De Reszke / VIRGINIA / The Aristocrat of / CIGARETTES. Two coats of arms - just visible on lid. Sides: 20 De Reszke 20 / De Reszke CORK / Godfrey Phillips (Aust) Pty. Ltd., Melbourne, Australia. MILLHOFF & C0 Pty Ltd.
