A newspaper article saved by the War Widows Guild, of a pilgrimage to the Shrine of Remembrance in 2004. It is an annual Legacy event. The War Widows Guild was founded by Mrs J M Vasey, the wife of Major-General Vasey. During the second world war she became secretary of the AIF Women's Association, a body which sought to help soldiers' wives. Her work with this body drew her attention to the plight of war widows. After Major-General George Alan Vasey died in an aircraft accident on 5 March 1945 she became a widow herself. At the end of the war Mrs Vasey founded the War Widows Guild. The Victorian War Widows Guild closed in 2021. Some items, including this article, were donated to the Legacy archive for preservation. It was possible for a widow to be members of both Legacy and the War Widows Guild. A circular sent to Victorian schools informing them of the 1995 annual "Anzac Commemoration Ceremony for Students", held on 5th April 1995. The ceremony provides a valuable opportunity for students to gain an appreciation of the Anzac spirit, the significance of the Shrine and the meaning of Anzac Day. The 6 pages outline the order of service of the ceremony, some background notes on the ANZAC Commemorations, a short history of the Shrine of Remembrance, a story of Legacy and a letter from the President of Melbourne Legacy. It mentions the ceremony is telecast on the ABC television channels. They mention is it a 'Circular to Victorian Colleges and Schools' so they were sent to school to publicise the events. There is a letter to the school Principal from the President of Legacy inviting the schools to attend or to listen to the telecast. Each ceremony was attended by the Governor of Victoria, in 1995 it was Sir Richard McGarvie. Undated but stapled to a further copy of 00130 which was dated 'Xmas 1932'. Pages headed 'Camp Savige, Wednesday' indicate that it was created for a camp at Stan Savige's property, recounting the cricket competition between the Dark Blues, Light Blues, Green and Orange teams. Written and illustrated by Pat Hanna in a satirical style it was clearly intended to entertain as much as to inform, but the humour would be seen to be heavy handed or not funny at all today. Nevertheless it demonstrates that campers enjoyed their stay. See also 01290 and 01289. In the early years, Legacy organised outings to the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring close to the beach. Permanent camp buildings were built in 1930. In 1930 Lord Somers (Governor of Victoria) also started a camp at a nearby property and the area was renamed Somers. The State Electricity Commission Sub-Branch of the RSL convened a commemoration service for Sir John Monash on Sunday 16 April 1972, which took place at the equestrian statue of Monash at the Shrine. The MC was Legatee D.J. Simonson (President 1970 and great nephew of Sir John), who also laid a wreath on behalf of Melbourne Legacy, and the address was given by Dr. J.A.L. Matheson, Vice Chancellor of Monash University. Matheson spoke of the establishment of the University in 1958 and how appropriate it had been to name it after Monash, comparing the struggle to create a world class university with Monash's struggles on the Western Front. Appropriately Monash had been chairman of the constructing body of the Shrine. In 1923 he was approached to become the first President of Legacy, a position which he declined as he was heavily involved as the Chairman of the State Electricity Commission. A paper which was delivered to the Legacy in Victoria Conference in 1980, detailing Melbourne Legacy's involvement in housing the children of Legacy widows since 1942. By 1950 Melbourne Legacy administered four houses - Holmbush, Stanhope, Blamey House and Harelands - and cared for approximately 100 children. The houses were designed to be as homely as possible, and each one was largely autonomous. Children, many of whom came from country Victoria, would go to their own homes during school holidays and the Christmas season. The stated objectives were to 'pass out into the world young men and women with high ideals of citizenship, who are self-reliant and self-supporting.' Also 'to provide affection, security and a future goal and essential discipline.' The country Clubs and Groups would send provisions such as preserved fruit, cheese, eggs, honey, citrus fruit, butter, and potatoes throughout the year to support the residences. Numbers of residents declined during the 70s, and in 1975 a Residences Committee recommended that Blamey House and Harelands should be closed, leaving only Stanhope in operation, the first Blamey House having closed in 1955 with Holmbush being renamed the second Blamey House. By 1980 the only remaining house was Stanhope with an average occupancy of 20. See Cat. A diary written by Legatee Frank Doolan as he sailed to Perth and then visited Legatee Ivan Davies and his wife Mercy. He mentions docking at King George Sound which was the harbour from which transport assembled to convoy to the Middle East for the first World War. He was greeted by a member of Perth Legacy, Keith Manwell. He mentions visiting Mt Clarence and The Anzac Desert Mounted Monument "which was destroyed by Nasser's Gyppos at Port Said, and of which the pieces were transported back to Australia, stone base and all complete. Where a new model was made by Ray Ewen at Frankston and was sent back to Italy to be melted down and recast. It is double life size and very striking, depicting an Anzac charging from a horse which has been shot down under shellfire, to a new charger - rearing to go." He leaves the SS Kangaroo for a few days to visit a "Legacy pal", Ivan Davies. They toured his farm 'Carngham'. His observation at the end shows the comradeship of Legatees. "time to depart after several glorious days of perfect hospitality. To be accepted spontaneously as one of the family is the test of true friendship, and we received the full treatment from Mercy and Ivan at 'Carngham'". The year is unknown but the trip was in March. It could have been before a Legacy Conference in Perth. Was with other memorabilia that has come from Frank Doolan from both his war service and his time with Legacy. Frank Doolan posted this copy of his diary to Ivan Davies in 1978. Not sure how it and the cover letter (01131) were returned to Legacy's collection. The diary shows that Legatees from different regions of Australia visited each other and had strong friendships over the years. Photos of Legacy staff member Susie Howard visiting Mr Alf Young at the Australian Military Cemetery in St Marys Church yard, Harefield in UK. During World War 1 the Australian Auxiliary Hospital No.1 was stationed at Harefield Park in Harefield, UxBridge, Middlesex UK. 111 Australian soldiers and one nurse from the hospital are buried at St Mary's Church, Harefield. This became an Australian Military Cemetery with individual headstones and an obelisk and arch. The headstones which are of a scroll design unique amongst Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemeteries were chosen by the staff and patients at the hospital. The arch was erected by the CWGC. Anzac Day services are held there and the local school became involved with the headmaster, Mr Jefferies, bringing the school children to lay flowers on every grave and attend the service on Anzac Day. This started in 1921 and has continued until at least 2021. One school child who attended was Mr Alf Young, he made contact with Legacy in the 1990s and sent photos of the Anzac Day Services and the cemetery. Legacy responded by sending Australian flags for the school children and also Legatee John Cohen met with Mr Young when in London. Melbourne Legacy staff member Susie Howard also visited Mr Young and the cemetery in 1995. Mr Young provided historical photos and information of the area to Legacy. He was featured in the widows' newsletter The Answer many times and his death was announced in The Answer in April 1997, he was 85. Many of the photos he provided were labelled as coming from Mr R G Neil, Photographic historian from Harefield. A letter that was sent to potential members of a new club being formed in Melbourne in September 1923. The text of the letter includes; 'The inaugural luncheon of the proposed Remembrance Club will be held at Anzac House at 1pm on Tuesday next 25th inst. You are urged to be present and the promoters would appreciate the presence of any ex-AIF friend you care to bring with you.' The Remembrance Club in Melbourne later became Legacy. The notation H1 in red pen shows that it was part of the archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy. Hence the notation of being forwarded from Legatee Kemsley to Anderson in 1969.This is one of the first documents that pertain to the Remembrance Club - later becoming Legacy. The Answer is a newsletter in magazine format that is sent to the widows that are helped by Melbourne Legacy. For the widows who are sight impaired a copy of the newsletter is audio described onto CD by Vision Australia and posted to them. It contains information about meetings and activities. This edition contained articles on the VVFS regional launch, a VLO update, Youth Camps, a paddleboat fundraiser being organised, and photos of Legacy Week 2022. Also a reflection on the battle of Pozieres where the Centenary Torch Relay will start in April 2023. Colour photo of a group of Legacy widows in Beijing China. Melbourne Legacy would help arrange tours and day trips for the Widows clubs. This was a tour in 1993 that went to China. There appears to be about 50 ladies in the photo with a two tour guides. From the sign it appears it was taken on 23 June 1993. The tour was run by Interasia Tours and advertised in The Answer. It was an 8 day tour to Beijing and covered places such as Temple of Heaven, Tiananmin Square, Forbidden City, Summer Palace, Ming Tombs and the Great Wall of China. Colour photos of a trip by the Walking for Pleasure group for a walk by the sea. Participants would meet at Legacy House and make their way to a destination, sometimes by bus, or train or even ferry in the case of trips to Williamstown. Walks were generally on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month. The sessions were a fun way to exercise and enjoy the company of others. The events were advertised in the Answer and anyone was welcome to join. Legacy organises outings and events for the widows to participate in. Names are not known. Location and date is unknown, probably about 2005 due to then other photos they were stored with. Photograph of Queen Elizabeth II on a state visit to Melbourne in February 1963 receiving flowers from Christine Kelson, a junior legatee. An article in the Legacy's Weekly Bulletin on 26 February mentions the details. Christine was 14 years old and daughter of the late Signaller Arthur Kelson who served with the 9th division in Middle East and who was taken prisoner in North Africa and made a POW in Italy and Germany. Her mother Mrs Dorothy Kelson, served with the AMWAS. A special luncheon was held for 61 World War 1 widows as a lead up to "Legacy Week". Legatees dressed up as moustached waiters to add a bit of humour to the day. Due to its success it was held for a number of years. Legatee waiters included Lucky Luscombe George Woodward and Alan Woodward. Ron Austin, a World War I veteran spoke to entertain the ladies. A letter dated 8th February 1943 from F H Adams of Factory Road Yarragon, to apply for the position of housemaster of the Legacy Hostel. He served for 12 years in the regular army and attained the rank of Captain. Serving part time in the V.D.C. as Battalion Commander. He mentions recent work on his brother-in-law's dairy farm while he was serving in the A.I.F. but now returned with injuries meaning the farm would be sold. His wife served as a nurse in WWI and is capable of teaching cooking, dressmaking and piano playing. They have one son currently 11 years old. A second letter dated 18 February 1943, from F.H. Adams thanking Legacy for the interview. Holmbush was the first children's home established by Melbourne Legacy. It was later renamed Blamey House when the first Blamey House was sold. Melbourne Legacy ran three residences: Blamey House (purchased 1947) , Stanhope (purchased 1945) and Harelands (purchased 1950), to take care of children whose fathers were servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself. Harelands accommodated boys and girls under the age of 14, Blamey House looked after boys over 14, and Stanhope looked after girls over 14. From 1988 to 2021, Legacy held a public speaking contest for young secondary school students. It was initially called the Junior Plain English Speaking Award (JPESA) and later called Legacy Junior Public Speaking Award (LJPSA). Schools were eligible to send along up to 4 representatives to compete in a preliminary round. This is a photo of Lana Jenkins speaking in the Great Hall of the National Gallery of Victoria. Lana was the Victorian state winner in 1992. She got the opportunity to attend the Plain English Speaking national final being held in Sydney - which was a contest for an older age group, not run by Legacy but by the Plain English Foundation. The following was taken from a programme in 1996: "The Award aim is to promote enhanced oral communication skills for 12-14 year old students and to help young people appreciate the ideals of Legacy - voluntary service, caring and comradeship - and the need for remembrance. It began in 1988 in the Melbourne area with the support of the Ministry of Education and The Plain English Foundation. Entries have grown from 24 in the 1988 competition to over 300 in schools across the State, plus greater numbers participating in the process of selecting four contestants from each school. In 1995, a successful Interstate Championship was held with contestants from Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. A note that Legatee Frank Doolan wrote to capture an encounter with a widow. "Mrs Nora Sennett, a cousin of the late Sir Stanley Savige recently wrote to enquire of the whereabouts of the oil painting which had been presented by her late husband to Legacy on the occasion when Stan Savige had opened an exhibition of his work in the Athenaeum Gallery. Mrs Sennett was visited at her new domicile in the MECWA block of single units in Warner St Malvern, and was assured that the painting was well cared for and was hung in a prominent place in Melbourne Legacy Comradeship Corner. She is one of our senior widows now aged 87, and was one of a family of five girls, all of whom are still living and who were one of the early families of Korumburra. Mrs Sennett explained how her late husband, who served with the 39th Battalion (EGGS ARE COOKED) was with General McNicoll on the site of the painting at Passchendaele. and the General remarked that he should paint the scene some day. It certainly captures the atmosphere of devastation caused by artillery barrage, and emphasises the duck boards which were initiated by the AIF to help communication over the blasted terrain of mud, and shell holes of Flanders Fields. FJD' Was with other memorabilia that has come from Frank Doolan from both his war service and his time with Legacy. He was on the archive committee and made attempts to collate the history of Legacy. This note shows that there was a painting of Passchedale painted by Stan Savige's cousin and donated to Legacy. Photo from a book compiled about the Legacy children's residence called Stanhope. A photo of a past legacy boy Graham Lambridge (?) his wife and children. They sent a photo from New Guinea in March 1960 and he visited Stanhope in November 1963. It was pasted into a scrapbook of photos and newspaper clippings that was possibly compiled by the Matron of Stanhope. It shows past residents kept in contact and sent photos back to Legacy and visited at times. Stanhope was supervised by Matron Dorothy (Dorrie) Vines from the time it opened in 1946 until she retired in December 1966. It is likely she compiled this notebook as she is referred to as 'self' in one photo. Individual pages of photos or newspaper clippings have been added separately. Items 01817 to 01836. Blamey House (purchased 1947) , Stanhope (purchased 1945) and Harelands (purchased 1950) were residences run by Melbourne Legacy to take care of children whose fathers were servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself, or they needed to stay in Melbourne for further education. A list of the foundation members of the Intermediate Legacy Club from March 1929. They were: Graham F Billet, Frank C Corrie, Alan Davidson, Roy Davidson, Dan Fitzgerald, Len Frazer, Roy Gilbert, Frank C Holliday, Fred Hollingsworth, EM (Ted) Kennedy, Jack Kennedy, AV Lawson, JV Lawson, Jimmy Macgregor, R Rimmer, Norman A Smith, R Warnecke, Bert S Wood. (Bill Johnston was also mentioned in a letter by Norm Smith as a 'first nighter' see item at 01635). Background: The ILC was formed in 1929 with a total membership of 18 according to this list. The idea of the club sprang from those boys who had outgrown the Junior Legacy Club. In the early days it fielded a lacrosse team and it was this that mainly held the members together. Enthusiasm wained after a few years as it lacked a solid objective. The answer came from one of its members and in 1938 they founded the Don Esses Club. This was a club for the children of incapacitated ex-servicemen which met every Thursday night at 7.30 run by the ILC members. The name came from the signallers' code Disabled Servicemen's Sons. During the second world war 80% of the members of the ILC enlisted in the services. Leaving only 8 members that could not join due to ill health or reserved occupations. They continued the Don Esses and whatever aid they could to Legacy. ILC members had always helped Legacy where possible including being camp leaders or camp staff, with the annual demonstrations, and coffee stalls at the ANZAC dawn service. Post second world war some ILC members were nominated into Legacy, others drifted away in civil occupations. It was found difficult to recruit new blood into the ILC and eventually membership waned when the boys from the Don Esses clubs found other youth activities to join. The ILC ceased to meet regularly in the mid fifties. However a strong comradeship still existed between members and they would meet in one anothers homes. Members were always ready to help the senior Legacy Club in any way in their power and still helped at Christmas parties and summer camps. ILC was a service rendering organisation and was self governing. Non-sectarian and non-political, the members were ex-junior legatees over 18 years of age. After serving in World War 2 members were eligible to become members of Legacy. Was in a folder of material collated about the ILC by an early archive committee. Postcards were a common form of souvenirs for soldiers who were travelling around Europe either during World War 1 or just after, before returning to Australia. The link to Legacy is not known but there are many postcards are in the collection.Postcards were a very common form of communication in the first World War. Postcards may also record places for those who didn't have cameras. This type of souvenir would have been familiar to the first Legatees as they had served in World War 1 and many had served at Gallipoli.The front image of the postcard is a drawing of soldiers standing on a beach. One man in uniform can be see standing in the foreground, while several others are amassing on the shore. Six ships can be seen on the sea horizon. This photo of President David Ford and a widow with an envelope was taken on the same film as celebrations for the 80th Anniversary of Legacy in the grounds of Government House in 2003. It could be the widow passing over funds raised by the widows clubs to President Ford.There was a strong relationship between Legatees and the widows clubs.
